To make an encoder-based YouTube stream retry after a disconnect, enable Automatic Reconnect in OBS Studio’s Advanced settings and configure its retry behavior. This tells OBS to try reconnecting; it does not guarantee that every interruption will restore the live event in exactly the same state. YouTube’s separate auto-start and auto-stop controls govern starting or stopping a stream from the encoder, not the encoder’s reconnect attempts.
Enable automatic reconnect in OBS

In OBS Studio, open Settings, then Advanced, and find the Network section. Enable Automatically Reconnect (the label or placement may vary by OBS version).

Set the maximum number of retries and the retry delay, if those controls are available in your version and output. OBS documents supported outputs with a maximum retry count and a starting wait; the wait doubles on later attempts. Choose values suited to how long you expect a temporary outage to last. There is no universal default or guaranteed recovery time.

Apply the settings and confirm OBS is configured with the intended YouTube server and stream key. YouTube describes a stream key as password-like: keep it out of public screenshots and shared logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.

OBS’s reconnect option handles retries from the encoder to the streaming service. It cannot restore a connection while the underlying network remains unavailable, and the official guidance does not promise that every reconnect will preserve the exact state of the YouTube live event. Know what YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop do
YouTube Live Control Room has auto-start and auto-stop settings that let a creator start or stop streaming from the encoder. They are not the same as OBS’s automatic reconnect: they do not configure how OBS retries a broken connection. Set them according to how you want the stream to begin and end, and use the encoder’s reconnect controls for connection recovery. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
Test the stream and any backup before the event

Configure the encoder ahead of time and start a test stream. Check that the preview appears in Live Control Room and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a successful OBS connection means the viewer-facing stream is healthy.

If you plan to use a backup encoder, test an actual failover. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player moves to the backup encoder. A second encoder is a separate continuity measure, not a setting that automatically restarts the primary encoder.

After a test disconnect, confirm both what OBS reports and what viewers see in the YouTube player. Use the result to adjust retry behavior or your backup plan before relying on it for a scheduled stream.

Troubleshoot repeated or failed reconnects
If retries do not restore the stream, check the connection and the stream setup instead of simply increasing retry attempts.

Upload capacity is too close to the stream bitrate: YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total streaming bitrate. Check actual upload capacity and account for other devices using the connection; reduce the stream bitrate if needed.

Wi-Fi or network load is unstable: If practical, test over wired Ethernet and reduce competing network traffic. OBS identifies unstable connections and bitrate that exceeds available capacity as possible causes of disconnections.

A cable, router, modem, or other network component may be faulty: Test methodically and replace equipment only if the tests point to a fault. OBS includes networking hardware and cables among possible causes to investigate.

The key or server configuration is wrong: Verify the selected YouTube stream and server in OBS. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS rather than continuing to use a compromised credential.

The connection returns but the live event does not behave as expected: Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify the YouTube start/stop settings separately from OBS reconnect. Do not assume reconnect guarantees the prior event state.

YouTube recommends upload headroom in its Streaming tips. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting discusses disconnections, capacity, and network causes. Its guidance says dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself; investigate the connection and setup rather than treating that as a guarantee about every system.

“Kids’ stream” does not by itself determine the audience setting. Select the audience designation that accurately describes the content. YouTube says streams marked Made for Kids have features disabled or restricted, including live chat and reminder notifications; other features may also be limited. These audience and child-safety settings are separate from reconnect behavior. Check YouTube’s current Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming guidance.
