You can run a game walkthrough on YouTube around the clock by sending gameplay through an encoder or, on supported modern consoles, using the console’s direct livestream feature. For a true 24/7 broadcast, plan for a computer or cloud service to keep sending the feed, test the full setup, and arrange a local recording: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Choose how to capture and send gameplay
The right setup depends on where the game runs and how much control you need over the broadcast. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and direct livestreaming from eligible modern consoles; neither route is a universal winner. Check YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and your console maker’s instructions for current availability.
| Route | Capture source | Control and setup | When extra hardware may be needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC encoder | Gameplay on the streaming computer, or video arriving from a separate device. | An encoder can capture the game, combine overlays, and accept external audio or video hardware. It offers more production control, with more setup to configure and monitor. | A capture card may be needed to bring a separate console or device’s video into the computer. It is not required for every PC workflow. |
| Console direct stream | Gameplay running on a supported console. | YouTube documents direct livestreaming on eligible modern consoles. Follow the console maker’s steps; available controls depend on the console. | A capture card is not inherently required for direct streaming. It may be relevant if you choose to route console video through a computer encoder instead. |
YouTube identifies an external microphone and headphones as typical gaming-stream equipment, but they are optional. Decide first whether the game runs on the computer that sends the stream or on a separate console; that determines whether an encoder, capture hardware, or the console’s own streaming function fits your workflow.
Make sure your channel can go live
Before configuring an encoder, check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements. The current general guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and sets a minimum age of 16. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the day you want to start.

Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Use the Live Control Room to set up the event. If you are streaming directly from a console, follow its maker’s instructions instead.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the event’s encoder connection details, retrieve the values YouTube provides. YouTube describes the key as the address and password that let an encoder send your feed.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Choose YouTube as the destination if the software offers a service selector, then enter the stream URL and key where requested. Consult the encoder’s own current instructions for its labels and controls.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, on-screen overlay, or public recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream controls before broadcasting again.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview before you make the walkthrough public or schedule a long run.
For an encoder, YouTube documents how to stream with an encoder, including how to connect it to the Live Control Room.
Choose settings for your output and upload connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its published encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Check the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the resolution and ingest method you plan to use.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Match bitrate to the target and connection. YouTube’s guidance varies by resolution and ingest method; there is no single bitrate that suits every walkthrough or internet connection. Measure available upload capacity and leave headroom rather than selecting a rate that saturates the connection.
- Use a stable output. Configure constant bitrate and the recommended keyframe interval, then verify that the encoder is not repeatedly dropping frames or disconnecting.
- Check frame rate and motion. Up to 60 fps is supported by the cited general guidance, but select an output your computer and connection can sustain. Test fast camera movement and gameplay action, not just a static menu.
- Confirm audio before going public. Listen for game audio and commentary at the intended levels, and make sure neither is missing or distorted. YouTube’s audio recommendations vary with ingest method and target quality, so check the linked settings guidance rather than applying one value universally.
HLS is another ingest option for some formats and HDR or codec needs, but YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its documented setup uses 1–4 second segments, TS format, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Most walkthrough creators can start with RTMPS unless their chosen format or workflow calls for HLS; consult YouTube’s HLS setup instructions if using it.
Run a complete test before leaving the stream on
A short test catches audio, connection, and playback problems before they affect a long broadcast. Use representative gameplay footage, including the motion and sound you expect viewers to see.

- Start a short unlisted test and confirm that the encoder connects and the Live Control Room preview appears.
- Check the stream from the channel or watch page and from a mobile device to confirm viewers can reach it.
- Listen to the full audio mix and inspect picture quality during both quiet scenes and fast gameplay.
- If recording locally, confirm that the archive file is present and growing before relying on it.
- Keep monitoring stream health, audio, and video while the event is live. YouTube’s live-streaming operational tips cover previewing and monitoring an encoder broadcast.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit and recovery
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a continuous 24/7 walkthrough, do not count on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the full broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; ensure you have enough storage for the recording and check that the file is actually growing during the stream. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Local recording and the live feed are separate concerns: a saved recording does not by itself restore a broadcast that disconnects. Monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health during the run, and be ready to reconnect if the feed stops. YouTube’s cited archive guidance does not establish that splitting a broadcast into shorter events guarantees a complete archive.

Check game, music, and account rights
You are responsible for ensuring your live content follows YouTube’s Community Guidelines and that you have the rights needed to use it, including music rights. A game being available to play does not establish that every game or soundtrack is cleared for an unattended livestream. Check the publisher’s current livestream and soundtrack policy for the specific game, especially when licensed music can play in-game. YouTube’s Terms of Service address creators’ responsibility for necessary rights, while its live-streaming rules cover platform requirements. The permissions question must be checked title by title.
Keep the broadcast within YouTube’s rules while it runs. Avoid exposing the stream key, and do not assume a stream’s availability or archive is guaranteed simply because the encoder initially connected.
