The most useful first steps are to document what happened, preserve the location and account details, and make reports through the relevant services. Take care not to treat every copied profile as the same kind of incident: a screenshot or copied text may raise privacy or harassment concerns, while an intimate image may qualify for a specialized removal process. The available procedures depend on the service and where you are.

1. Preserve evidence before you report or block
Content can disappear once it is reported or deleted, so make a clear record before taking action. Save the post and enough surrounding context to show what was shared and where it appeared. A record can help you explain the situation to the hosting service, the dating app, or relevant authorities or support services if you need to escalate.

- Capture screenshots of the post, including any caption, comments, or surrounding context relevant to what happened.
- Record the post’s URL or other location details, the date and time you found it, and the account, group, or page identifiers.
- Save related messages, threats, or communications. Keep original files where possible and do not edit your only copy.
- Note any report confirmations or case numbers after you contact a service.
Try to preserve both the content and information that identifies its location. A screenshot can show the words or image, while a URL, page name, group name, or account identifier can help you point a reviewer to the post. If the post is in a group or on a page, keep the relevant group or page details as well as the account that shared it. Save relevant messages separately so they do not get lost if a conversation or account later becomes unavailable.

Keep the evidence factual. Note when you found the content and what you observed; distinguish that from anything you are unsure about. Preserve originals where possible rather than cropping, annotating, or otherwise changing the only copy. You can make additional copies for reporting, but keep an unedited version if you can. The aim is to retain a clear record, not to investigate the person yourself or to circulate the material further.

2. Report the post to the service hosting it
Use the hosting website or app’s report or support process. Pick the closest accurate reason—such as harassment, privacy, impersonation, or nonconsensual intimate imagery if that is what was shared. Explain briefly what was posted and why you are asking for review or removal. Save the confirmation or case number.

Reporting to the hosting service and reporting to the dating service are distinct steps. The site where the post appears is the service that can review that post under its rules. The dating app may be able to review the account or conduct there, especially if the material was taken from your profile or the person contacted you through the app. One report does not necessarily notify the other service, so consider making both reports when both are relevant.

Services use different report categories and make their own decisions. Reporting does not guarantee removal or an account ban. If the first report does not resolve the issue, use the service’s support or appeal route if available and include the original report details. Keep the case number or confirmation so you can refer back to what you already submitted. If you follow up, explain whether the content is still available or whether there is new relevant information. Avoid assuming that a particular category, response time, or outcome is available across every service.
3. If an intimate photo or video was shared, use the specialized process
A dating-profile screenshot, ordinary profile photo, or copied text is not automatically an intimate image. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes image-based abuse as creating, sharing, or threatening to share an intimate photo or video without permission. Its guidance covers real, digitally altered, and AI-generated intimate images. FTC: Image-Based Abuse: What To Know and Do
That distinction matters because the U.S. removal route described here is specific to covered intimate images; it is not a general takedown process for every copied dating profile. If what was posted is a profile screenshot, ordinary portrait, or text, report it through the hosting service’s usual process and the dating app as appropriate. If an intimate image or video was shared or threatened, use the intimate-image guidance as well as the ordinary platform-reporting steps that fit the situation.
In the United States, the FTC says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal of covered intimate images and remove those images, along with known identical copies, within 48 hours of a valid request. Start by using the platform’s request process. If it does not remove the image within 48 hours of a valid request, or there is no working process, report the platform through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC states that enforcement began May 19, 2026, the deadline set by the Act for covered platforms to provide a request process and meet the 48-hour removal requirement. The 48-hour period is tied to a valid request and applies to covered platforms and covered images. It is not a promise that every service must remove any kind of profile content within 48 hours, nor does the specialized process make an ordinary screenshot eligible. Follow the platform’s request instructions and keep a record of the request and when it was made. If the platform has no working request process or does not meet the stated requirement for a covered image, the FTC says to report the platform through TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
This is a specialized U.S. route for covered intimate images—not a general takedown guarantee for profile screenshots, ordinary photos, or text. The FTC says adults may use StopNCII.org to help limit the spread of intimate images, and directs minors to National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reporting and Take It Down resources. The FTC also cautions: “Only platforms can take down intimate photos and videos shared without your consent.” FTC guidance

These options have different roles: use the hosting platform’s process to request removal, and use the FTC route to report a covered platform if it lacks a working request process or fails to act as described. StopNCII.org is described by the FTC as a way for adults to help limit spread; it is not a replacement for reporting the post to the platform. For minors, follow the FTC’s direction to NCMEC reporting and Take It Down resources. Do not assume that one of these options covers ordinary profile material or works as a universal removal tool.
4. Consider safety before blocking or engaging
After evidence is saved and reports are made, blocking or muting may help stop contact. Avoid arguing with or confronting the person if doing so could increase risk. If the situation involves family, domestic, or sexual violence, or coercive control, eSafety advises considering an online safety plan before reporting and blocking. Blocking and reporting can be useful, but there is no need to treat them as automatic first steps in every situation. In a situation involving violence or coercive control, consider whether taking action online could affect your safety and make a safety plan before reporting or blocking. Save evidence first if you can do so safely. Do not engage with the person just to demand an explanation or removal if that could intensify contact or risk.

For ongoing harassment, blackmail, threats, image-based abuse, or other suspected crimes, seek help from the relevant local authorities and support services. eSafety specifically advises contacting police in Australia if personal safety is at risk or a crime has been committed. Procedures and available services differ by location; outside Australia, use the authorities and support organizations relevant to where you are.
If there is an immediate danger, prioritize physical safety over completing a report or collecting every detail. Contact local emergency or police services. For non-immediate but serious concerns, local support services or authorities can help you consider next steps. The relevant contacts and processes differ by country, so use the services that apply where you are rather than assuming Australian or U.S. procedures apply everywhere.
5. Reduce what a stranger can learn from your profile
Review your dating app’s visibility, location, reporting, blocking, and privacy controls. Consider removing or limiting details that make it easier to identify or locate you, including your full name, workplace, or precise location. Avoid reusing photos from public social-media accounts where possible, since identical images can make cross-platform identification easier. Think about both what your profile says and what can be inferred by combining it with other public information. Limiting a full name, workplace, or precise location can reduce the identifying details available on the profile. Reusing a photo that also appears on a public social-media account may make it easier to connect the two accounts, so consider using different images where possible. Review location and visibility settings to understand who can see your profile and what controls the app offers.
These are exposure-reduction measures, not a guarantee of privacy. They cannot ensure that no one will take a screenshot, repost an image, or identify you. They are also separate from the response steps: if material has already been posted, preserve evidence and report it rather than relying only on changing your profile settings.

There is no universal legal rule established here for every reposted dating profile. Whether ordinary profile text or a non-intimate photo violates a law or service policy depends on the jurisdiction and the facts, including what was shared, how it was obtained, how it was used, and the applicable platform rules. For a specific dispute, consider local legal advice.
A service’s rules and reporting categories can differ from local law. A post may be reportable under a service’s policies even where the legal answer is not clear from the information available here. Conversely, submitting a report does not itself establish that a law was broken or guarantee the service will remove the material. Describe the facts accurately and leave legal assessment to qualified local advice when needed.
The FTC’s OkCupid/Match case is a separate matter: it concerns allegations that a dating service shared users’ personal information, including photos and location information, contrary to privacy promises. The FTC case page described the matter as pending and was last updated March 30, 2026; it does not establish a general rule about one user reposting another user’s profile. Keep jurisdiction in mind when using these resources. The FTC information above describes the U.S. Take It Down Act process for intimate images. The eSafety Commissioner’s advice on dating, evidence, reporting, and safety planning is Australian guidance. If you are elsewhere, contact locally relevant authorities and support organizations and check the applicable service process. No prevalence figure or universal legal conclusion about ordinary reposted dating profiles is established by the sources cited here.
