A conference rejection is a decision about one submission in one review cycle—not a final judgment on the work or its future. First check whether the decision is final or whether a response or revision stage remains. Then use the reviews to decide whether to appeal under the conference’s rules, revise for another venue, or pause for more work.
What to do in the first day after a rejection
It is understandable to feel disappointed. Give yourself a little time before replying, then establish what the decision means and what deadlines still apply.

- Save the decision record. Keep the decision letter, reviews, meta-review, and any submission-portal notices together. These are the basis for your next steps.
- Check the current conference instructions. Look for a rebuttal or response window, a revise-and-resubmit option, an appeal process, and the exact deadline. Rules can change by venue and year; do not rely on a previous cycle’s policy.
- Discuss the reviews with your coauthors. Before drafting a reply or choosing a new venue, agree on which concerns are actionable and what further analysis or work may be needed.
For example, ACM CHI 2026 offers eligible revise-and-resubmit papers five weeks to revise. Its review-process page says: “Unlike journals, a rejection in round 1 should be taken to indicate that the work would not be ready for this year’s CHI, not that it has no place at CHI at all.” That describes CHI’s process; it is not a general rule for other conferences. Read the reviews for patterns, not just scores. Separate the comments by the kind of response they require. A reviewer may be mistaken about a detail while still identifying a real gap in how the paper explains it.

- Factual misunderstanding: Identify the passage or evidence that may have been missed, then ask whether the paper makes it easy to find. Clarify the text even when the reviewer’s reading appears incorrect.
- Correctness or evidence concern: Check whether the methods, analysis, proof, or supporting evidence actually address the issue. If they do not, identify what additional work is required rather than answering with assertion alone.
- Clarity issue: Mark sections, definitions, figures, or claims that readers found difficult to follow. These are often specific revision targets.
- Contribution or novelty concern: Re-examine how the paper distinguishes its contribution from prior work and whether its claims match what the evidence establishes.
- Venue-fit concern: Consider whether the work’s audience, scope, and emphasis fit the conference, or whether a different venue would be more appropriate.
Make a revision list that connects each substantive concern to a concrete change, an analysis to run, or a reason a proposed change is not warranted. UIST 2026 says its full reviews are provided for context and guidance on improving a paper. ACM UIST 2026 author information.
When to rebut, appeal, or move on
Rebuttal during review
A rebuttal is an in-process opportunity at some conferences, not a universal way to reopen a final rejection. If the review process is still open, follow that conference’s current rules for the deadline, length, anonymity, and permitted material. UIST 2026 instructs authors to maintain anonymity in the rebuttal; that instruction is venue-specific. Keep any response focused on consequential points and supported by the submitted work or allowed materials. ACM UIST 2026 author information.

Appeal after a final decision
Do not assume that a conference offers an appeal. The conference’s own policy determines whether one is possible and what grounds it permits. If an appeal route exists, consider using it only for a specific procedural problem or a consequential factual error supported by the record. Write briefly and professionally, identifying the issue and its evidence. A disagreement with a reviewer’s judgment, by itself, may not meet the conference’s stated grounds.
Revision, another venue, or more work
These are different choices, not mandatory stages in a fixed sequence. If the central concerns can be addressed in time, revise and identify a suitable venue. If they require additional research or analysis, pause and do that work. If the paper’s scope or audience is a mismatch, consider a venue with a better fit. A rejection does not itself establish that the work should be resubmitted unchanged.

How to choose the next venue and prepare a resubmission
Before submitting elsewhere, check the new venue’s current author instructions and submission system. In particular, verify:
- Whether the work fits the conference’s scope and audience.
- Submission dates and whether the revision can be completed to a suitable standard by the deadline.
- Formatting, length, anonymity, and any required prior-submission disclosure.
- Rules on concurrent submissions and whether the work may be under review elsewhere.
- Whether the venue requests or permits prior versions, reviews, a response letter, or a change list.
IEEE VIS 2026 encourages authors resubmitting rejected papers to include earlier versions, reviews, a response letter, and a list of changes. It also says this material is optional and reviewer handling may vary. Treat that as one venue’s practice, not a standard requirement. Check the instructions for the conference and year you are targeting. IEEE VIS 2026 Call for Participation: Papers.

What rejection statistics can—and cannot—tell you
One study of ICLR 2022 reported that 1,444 of 3,338 papers had increased average scores after rebuttal; the increased-score group had an approximately 58.38% acceptance rate. Those figures describe an association within that conference dataset. They do not show that rebuttal caused acceptance, predict an individual paper’s chances, or establish a general rate for computer science conferences. Huang et al., 2023.

A separate randomized experiment by Shah et al. (2020) involved 133 reviewers evaluating 19 papers, with novice reviewers and a signal that a submission had been rejected previously. In that experiment, the prior-rejection signal was associated with an average 0.78-point lower overall score on a 10-point scale (95% confidence interval: −1.30 to −0.24). This result is bounded by the study’s design and participants; it is not a reason to conceal submission history. Follow the next venue’s disclosure rules. Shah et al., 2020.
