If someone questions your voter registration, first ask what specific problem they see, then confirm the rules with your state or local election office. If you are at the polling place and officials cannot confirm your eligibility, ask whether you can cast a provisional ballot. A challenge alone does not determine whether you are eligible, and the rules for resolving it vary by state.
Find out what is being challenged
Ask the poll worker or election official to explain the issue and what you need to do next. It may be a missing name on the voter list, a mismatch in your name or address, or a question about eligibility. These situations can have different procedures, so do not assume that one explanation or document requirement applies everywhere.

If a poll watcher or another challenger raised the issue, ask the election official—not the challenger—to explain the official procedure. Watchers and challengers have distinct roles, and the authority to challenge eligibility varies by jurisdiction. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission explains poll watchers’ roles.

Contact your state or local election office using the official state election website or local office directory. Ask whether your registration is active, what record or eligibility concern needs to be resolved, and which steps or documents the jurisdiction requires. Registration lookup tools, deadlines, and voting rules differ by state; the EAC’s voter FAQs can direct you toward state-specific information.

If the issue comes up before Election Day, contact the office promptly so there may be time to correct a record mismatch or learn what options are available. The office can tell you whether same-day registration or another remedy applies where you live.
At the polling place, ask about a provisional ballot
For federal elections, the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) generally requires a provisional ballot when a voter says they are registered but their name is missing from the eligible-voter list, or when a poll worker says the voter is ineligible. A provisional ballot lets officials review eligibility instead of turning the voter away outright. There are exceptions: the EAC identifies Idaho, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Procedures also vary under state law, so ask the poll worker or election office what applies to your situation. See the EAC’s overview of federal election laws.

If you are offered a provisional ballot, ask which fields or affirmation you must complete and whether any evidence or follow-up is required. Complete the ballot and paperwork carefully, and request the written notice explaining how to check its status. Do not guess at state-specific requirements.

HAVA requires a free-access system, such as a website or phone line, through which provisional voters can learn whether their ballot counted and, if it did not, why. Use the official contact or instructions on the written notice you receive. If the system reports a problem or you cannot find the status, contact the election office promptly and ask whether any further steps are available.

Election officials review provisional ballots under applicable state law; a ballot is counted if the voter is found eligible. The process and standards are not identical across states, and a provisional ballot is not a guarantee that the vote will count. The EAC’s Quick Start Management Guide on Provisional Ballots describes the process as “fail safe voting”: an opportunity to cast a ballot while officials review the voter’s information.
