If someone is recording you and you feel unsafe, move away and get help before trying to stop them or gather proof. If it is safe, you can clearly ask them to stop, document what happened, and report it through a suitable local or platform channel. Whether the recording is unlawful depends on where it happened, what it captured, and what the recorder does with it; “I didn’t give permission” alone does not settle the legal question.
What should you do first?
- Check your immediate safety. Create distance and move somewhere safer or more public if that makes sense for the situation. Contact local emergency services if you are in immediate danger, or reach out to someone you trust. Emergency numbers and reporting routes vary by location.
- Do not escalate to get the device. Avoid grabbing a phone or camera, physically blocking the person, or following them. Collecting evidence is not worth putting yourself at risk.
- If it feels safe, state your boundary. You can say, “I don’t want to be recorded. Please stop.” This makes your objection clear, but it does not by itself establish that the recording is illegal or necessarily require the person to stop.
- Write down what happened. Note the date, time, location, who was recording, what you think was captured, what was said, and who witnessed it. Record observable facts rather than conclusions about the person’s intent.
- Choose a reporting route. Depending on the circumstances, that could mean venue management, a workplace or school safeguarding contact, the online platform, local police, a privacy regulator, or a victim-support service.
If you are being threatened, followed, coerced, or repeatedly targeted, prioritize support and safety planning over a direct conversation with the recorder.

Is it illegal to record someone without consent?
There is no single answer that applies everywhere. The rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances, including whether the recording captures audio or video, whether the conversation or activity was private, the recorder’s role, and whether the material is later shared or used to threaten or harass you.

Notice and consent are not always the same thing. The BJA body-camera discussion notes that informing someone about a recording does not itself mean consent is required. So a verbal objection may be important context, but it does not automatically determine whether the recording is lawful or force the recorder to stop.
What details can change the answer?

| Was the recorder part of the conversation? | Some rules distinguish between recording a conversation as a participant and recording a conversation between other people. The applicable distinction depends on local law. |
| Was the recording shared or used as a threat? | Making a recording and distributing it may be treated separately. Harassment, coercion, trespass, or a threat to publish can also affect what help is available. |
These are questions to help explain the incident to a local adviser—not a checklist that can determine legality on its own.

How should you preserve evidence?
- Keep relevant messages, emails, links, screenshots, and notices about the recording or its distribution. Note when you received or captured each item.
- Write down names and contact details for witnesses, if available, and keep a record of reports you make and any response you receive.
- If you are concerned the recorder can access your phone, accounts, or cloud storage, consider keeping records somewhere they cannot reach and ask a trusted person or support service for help.
- Do not repost or forward an intimate image to prove what happened. Unnecessary copying can spread the material further and compound the harm.
If content is online, save the page address and relevant screenshots before it disappears, where doing so is safe. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission lists screenshots, links, messages, and dates or times among useful supporting material for intimate-image abuse reports.
What if someone secretly recorded you in a private place?
Leave the space if you can do so safely, and seek help from someone responsible for the location, such as venue management, a school or workplace safeguarding contact, or local authorities. Avoid confronting the person alone if you think they may retaliate.

Record the location, when you discovered the recording, what you observed, and who else may have seen it. A hidden recording in a home, restroom, changing area, or during an intimate activity can raise different privacy concerns from filming an ordinary scene in public. The law still depends on your location and the facts, so get local advice rather than relying on a general online rule.
What if someone shares an intimate image or threatens to share one?
Consent to making an intimate image is separate from consent to distributing it. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women states that agreeing to have an intimate image made—or taking one yourself and sending it to someone—does not mean you agreed to have it shared with others. That guidance is U.S.-specific; available remedies elsewhere depend on local law.

If the image is already online
- Save identifying details without spreading the image. Keep the link, account name, screenshots of the post, and relevant messages or dates if you can do so safely.
- Report it to the platform. Use the platform’s reporting process for nonconsensual intimate imagery and retain any confirmation or case number.
- Use a location-specific support route. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s September 2026 guidance describes platform reporting, the Take It Down Act, and StopNCII.org, which uses image fingerprints to help participating services detect matching images. The FTC says covered platforms must remove qualifying intimate images and copies within 48 hours after a request under the U.S. process. This is not a universal deadline, nor does it apply to every kind of recording. In Singapore, the Online Safety Commission has a dedicated intimate-image abuse reporting process.
- Get support if you are being threatened or pressured. A threat to distribute an image can warrant urgent local support even if nothing has been posted yet.
Where can you report a recording?
Choose a route that fits both the harm and your location. You may need more than one.

- Recording on someone else’s premises: venue management or the organization responsible for the site may be able to address conduct under its policies.
- Workplace or school: use the appropriate safeguarding, conduct, or privacy reporting channel, especially if the recorder has authority over you or the behavior is repeated.
- Online sharing: report the post or account to the platform. For intimate images, use the relevant reporting options and location-specific support process.
- Possible privacy or recording-law violation: seek advice from a local legal-aid service, lawyer, or privacy regulator. Legal Aid Queensland advises people who believe their privacy has been invaded to seek legal advice; the relevant route differs elsewhere.
What to tell a local legal adviser
To get an incident-specific assessment, be ready to explain where the parties were, what kind of recording was made, whether the recorder was part of any conversation, whether the setting was private, and what happened to the material afterward. Include any threats, repeated contact, trespass, or coercion, along with the evidence you safely preserved. A qualified local adviser can assess the applicable law and possible next steps; a general guide cannot determine whether a specific recording was unlawful or whether evidence will be admissible.
