You do not have to prove your case by downloading, forwarding, or repeatedly watching the video. If it is an intimate video, the right next steps depend partly on your age when it was made and where you live; hash-based services can help in some cases, but they cannot remove every copy.
Start with the service hosting the video
Use the platform’s safety or support reporting flow to report the post and, where appropriate, the account. Choose the category for nonconsensual intimate imagery or privacy violation if one is available. Include the post’s location and enough information for the platform to identify it. You can report a privacy violation even if the recording is not sexual.

Reporting the post directly matters: only the service hosting content can remove it from its own platform. A report to a separate hash service is not a substitute for asking the host to take down a video already posted there. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises people dealing with image-based abuse to report it to the platform.

- The post or page URL, if you can copy it safely.
- The account or profile name and the date you found the post.
- A short statement that the video was shared without your permission.
- Relevant messages or threats, if they help explain the situation.
Follow the platform’s instructions, but do not send an intimate file to a person or service just to demonstrate that the report is genuine. If you cannot safely locate or document the post, you can still ask the platform for help.

Keep basic evidence without putting yourself at risk
If you feel safe doing so, note where and when you found the video, who posted it, and any threats or demands connected to it. Save relevant messages and account details. RAINN recommends preserving evidence when safe and recording who posted the material, where and when it appeared, and whether threats or extortion were involved.
You do not need to keep watching the video or circulate it to preserve useful information. Your safety and emotional wellbeing come first; gathering evidence is not a prerequisite for seeking help. If the video may depict someone who was under 18 when it was made, do not download or share it to collect evidence or submit it to a hash service.

Choose a hash service based on age when the video was made
Hash services create a digital fingerprint of a file on a device and share that fingerprint with participating platforms to help identify matching material. They are an additional measure, not a way to remove every copy across the internet. Use the service that fits the person’s age when the imagery was created.
| Route | Who it is for | What it can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct platform report | Anyone reporting content on a service | Requests removal from the service hosting the post | It does not itself remove copies hosted elsewhere. Coverage and legal duties vary by jurisdiction. |
| Take It Down, from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) | Explicit imagery made when the person was under 18, even if they are now an adult | Creates a hash on the person’s device and shares it with participating platforms | Use only a file already on your device. Do not download or share imagery to submit it; participating platforms and surfaces are limited. |
| StopNCII | Adults whose intimate imagery is at risk of being shared | Uses hash-based matching with participating companies; the service is free | Its FAQ notes that it may not protect against a video being shared. It does not report content to police. |
| Law enforcement or victim support | People facing threats, extortion, possible crimes, or needing help navigating a response | May provide reporting, investigative, or support options | Available agencies, laws, and remedies depend on location and circumstances. |
If the imagery was made when you were under 18
NCMEC’s Take It Down is intended for explicit images or videos made when the person depicted was under 18, including when that person is now an adult. It generates a hash on the device rather than uploading the actual file. NCMEC says not to download or share the imagery to submit it; use only a file already on your own device. If you do not have the file, do not try to obtain another copy just to use the service.

If the imagery was made when you were 18 or older
StopNCII is a free option for adults. Its matching works with participating companies, not every website or service. StopNCII’s FAQ specifically warns that the tool may not protect against a video being shared, and says the service does not report content to police. Treat it as one possible step alongside reporting the post to its host.
Escalate threats, extortion, or a platform’s failure to act
If someone is threatening to publish or spread a video, or is demanding money or something else in exchange for not doing so, preserve the messages if it is safe and report the conduct to an appropriate law-enforcement agency or victim-support service. Do not confront the poster or make a payment as a condition of getting help.

In the United States, the FTC says covered platforms must provide an easy way to request removal and take down a reported intimate image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a takedown request. If a covered platform has not done so within that period, the person can report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This 48-hour process is U.S.-specific and applies to covered platforms; it is not a worldwide deadline for every website or every kind of private video.

Understand that legal options depend on where you live
Consent to make or privately send a video is not consent to publish it. Whether sharing it violates a particular law—and what remedies are available—depends on the jurisdiction and the facts. A local lawyer or victim-support organization can help assess the options without assuming that a rule in another country applies to you.

In the United States, the Department of Justice describes a federal civil remedy for certain unauthorized sharing of intimate images. The remedy has legal requirements, so it does not necessarily apply to every case. It is a private civil action: the government does not represent the person bringing it. The DOJ also notes that a court may protect confidentiality in the case.
Agency routes and legal protections differ outside the United States, too. Seek local guidance for the rules where you are; a platform report remains an option for asking a service to address content hosted on its platform.
Get support while you deal with the removal process
Having a private video shared without permission can be frightening and isolating. Consider telling someone you trust and contacting a victim-support service. RAINN and the FTC point people affected by image-based abuse toward support resources. You can ask for help with reporting, safety planning, and deciding what to do next without sharing the video more widely.
