You usually do not need to add, declare, or start an Android service. This exception normally means that code called unbindService() with a ServiceConnection that Android cannot find in that context’s binding records. Find the caller, then make the bind and unbind operations use the same context, the same connection object, and one well-defined lifecycle owner.
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException:
Service not registered: com.example.MyServiceConnection@...
Identify the operation that failed
Read the complete Logcat stack trace rather than relying on the short exception title. The normal framework path is Context.unbindService(), which eventually checks Android’s client-side service bookkeeping. AOSP throws IllegalArgumentException("Service not registered: " + c) when the supplied connection is not present: LoadedApk.java.
Copy the first stack frame outside android.*. That frame usually identifies your lifecycle code or the SDK that made the invalid cleanup call.
Do not confuse it with:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Receiver not registered
That message normally comes from unregisterReceiver(), not unbindService(). Services and dynamically registered receivers have separate bookkeeping.

What “registered” means here
“Registered” refers to a client binding created with bindService(Intent, ServiceConnection, flags); it does not necessarily refer to a <service> entry in AndroidManifest.xml. Binding is asynchronous: Android receives your ServiceConnection and later invokes callbacks such as onServiceConnected(). See the Android bound-service guide: developer.android.com/develop/background-work/services/bound-services.
Therefore an app that visibly uses no service can still produce this error. A billing, advertising, analytics, authentication, media, Bluetooth, location, messaging, or other SDK may bind internally.
Fix an app-owned binding with explicit state
Keep one connection instance and track whether this owner currently has an unbind obligation. The following activity pairs onStart() and onStop():

The official pattern also guards teardown, but decide what your state means: a bind was requested, a connection was established, or the caller currently owes an unbind. Those states are not always identical, especially when wrappers or multiple callers are involved.

Java equivalent
private boolean bindingRequested = false;
private final ServiceConnection connection = new ServiceConnection() {
@Override public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName name, IBinder service) {
// Use the binder.
}
@Override public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName name) {
// Unexpected remote loss; this is not normal teardown.
}
};
private void bindToService() {
if (!bindingRequested) {
bindingRequested = bindService(
new Intent(this, MyService.class),
connection,
Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE
);
}
}
private void unbindFromService() {
if (bindingRequested) {
unbindService(connection);
bindingRequested = false;
}
}
Match the context and connection object
Android associates a binding with the context that performed it. Release it through that same context and pass the identical ServiceConnection object.
// Risky: different context instances
applicationContext.bindService(intent, connection, flags)
activity.unbindService(connection)
// Wrong: a new object is not the original connection
bindService(intent, createConnection(), flags)
unbindService(createConnection())
Centralize both operations in one owner, such as the same activity, fragment, or controller. Do not unbind through a view’s context, a different activity, or a fragment wrapper merely because it is convenient.

Pair lifecycle callbacks deliberately
| Bind | Unbind | Suitable when |
|---|---|---|
Activity.onStart() |
Activity.onStop() |
The connection is needed while the activity is visible |
Fragment.onStart() |
Fragment.onStop() |
The fragment owns the connection |
Activity.onResume() |
Activity.onPause() |
It is required only while resumed |
Controller start() |
The same controller’s stop() |
Ownership is centralized |
Common failures include binding in onCreate() and unbinding twice, binding only after a button click but unbinding unconditionally, or cleaning up from both a fragment and its host activity. Configuration changes can recreate an activity while another owner still holds state, so do not share an activity-owned connection casually. A ViewModel does not by itself make a context or teardown owner safe.
onServiceDisconnected() reports unexpected loss of the service process; it does not itself remove the binding. Do not treat that callback as proof that normal unbinding has already happened: ServiceConnection reference.
Handle failed or conditional binds carefully
The Boolean returned by bindService() needs context. Android’s bound-service documentation describes a pattern in which the client eventually calls unbindService() even when the call returns false, while custom wrappers and newer overloads may maintain different bookkeeping. Follow the documentation for the exact overload and API level you use; do not blindly force a flag to true or assume the return value alone proves that unbinding is safe. API details are documented at Context.

If a failed or skipped bind is followed by an exception during cleanup, inspect the wrapper’s state transitions. The fix is to correct that ownership model, not to add an unrelated service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When no project code calls bindService()
- Expand the complete exception and every
Caused bysection. - Find the first non-Android stack frame.
- Search source and integration code for
bindService(,unbindService(,ServiceConnection,onServiceConnected, andonServiceDisconnected. - Inspect startup providers, lifecycle observers, generated code, and dependency initialization. Review the dependency graph with
./gradlew :app:dependencies. - Disable recently added or upgraded SDKs one at a time, then reproduce with a clean build and minimal variant.
- Filter runtime output while reproducing, for example
adb logcat -v threadtime AndroidRuntime:E *:S; adjust syntax for your shell.
An SDK namespace in the connection class, or a first application-owned frame inside a dependency, is strong evidence that the library owns the binding. Update it, follow its lifecycle instructions, or file a reproducible issue with the full trace, Android version, device, compile and target SDKs, dependency versions, and lifecycle sequence. Never manually unbind a connection created by that SDK.
Advanced callbacks and API details
onBindingDied() was added in API 26. It means the binding is dead; unbind and deliberately rebind if the application still needs it. onNullBinding() means the service supplied no binder. Handle both according to the state model rather than treating either as ordinary activity teardown. Callback availability and newer bindService() overloads vary by API level; consult the ServiceConnection and Context references.

Use an explicit intent such as Intent(this, MyService::class.java). Android documentation states that binding with an implicit intent throws on Android 5.0/API 21 and later; that is a separate error from “Service not registered.”
Avoid fixes that hide the defect
- Do not add a manifest service just because the exception contains the word “service.”
- Do not create a new anonymous
ServiceConnectionfor unbinding. - Do not unbind from several lifecycle callbacks without one ownership policy.
- Do not assume
onServiceConnected()must have run before a valid teardown obligation exists. - Do not make catching
IllegalArgumentExceptionthe primary fix. Suppression can hide duplicate cleanup, wrong contexts, and SDK defects. - If multiple components bind the same connection, prevent duplicate binds, use a reference count, or centralize ownership; a single Boolean is insufficient for independent callers.
Practical decision checklist
- Is the exception really “Service not registered,” and does the trace show
unbindService()? - Who owns the connection: your code or a dependency?
- Did the matching bind run, and is there exactly one teardown path?
- Are bind and unbind using the same context and identical connection instance?
- Does your state represent the obligation your wrapper actually creates?
- Have you isolated recent SDK changes before assigning blame?
For additional practical examples of duplicate unbind and wrong-context failures, see the discussion at Stack Overflow; use it as troubleshooting context alongside the Android documentation and framework source.
