BMW used CES 2025 in Las Vegas to show a near-production version of Panoramic iDrive, a coordinated cockpit system for the Neue Klasse vehicle generation. It combines a windshield-base projection called BMW Panoramic Vision, a central touchscreen, a multifunction steering wheel, voice interaction and an optional 3D head-up display.
BMW Operating System X is the software foundation behind those interfaces. It manages how information, controls, personalization, apps and assistant functions work together. This was a technology and product-direction announcement, not a standalone accessory launch or a universal retrofit promise.
What BMW actually unveiled
The terms describe different parts of one system:
- Panoramic iDrive: the complete display-and-control concept.
- BMW Panoramic Vision: a broad projection across a darkened area at the bottom of the windshield.
- BMW Operating System X: the software platform coordinating displays, controls, profiles, apps, voice functions and vehicle features.
BMW says the interfaces are designed to share information according to context rather than treating each screen as an isolated device. Its overview is available at BMW Group’s iDrive announcement.
How the four interface elements work
BMW Panoramic Vision
Panoramic Vision projects information across a darkened strip at the windshield’s lower edge, extending broadly from the driver toward the passenger side. BMW lists possible content such as speed, navigation guidance, battery or fuel information, driver-assistance notifications, media and customizable widgets. It is not a full-windshield hologram: BMW describes a dedicated projection area integrated into the windshield architecture. Details are provided by BMW Group.

Central Display
The center touchscreen remains the main location for detailed navigation, media, settings, vehicle personalization and other interactive controls. Driving-critical information can be surfaced in Panoramic Vision while more complex tasks remain on the central screen.
Multifunction steering wheel
The new steering wheel adds physical controls and shortcuts close to the driver’s hands. BMW’s “shy tech” approach is intended to make functions discoverable without requiring every operation to be performed on the touchscreen. The concept combines buttons and steering-wheel inputs with touch, projection and voice; BMW has not said that every traditional control disappears.
Optional 3D Head-Up Display
The 3D head-up display is a separate, optional component for forward-view driving information. It is not the same hardware as Panoramic Vision, and two vehicles marketed with Panoramic iDrive may not have identical projection equipment. BMW identifies the option in its system description.

What Operating System X adds
Operating System X is more than a new graphic skin. BMW positions it as the software layer that coordinates the displays and controls, supports personalization and provides a basis for future over-the-air features.

- Routines can combine settings such as climate, seat position, navigation, media or driving modes when conditions are appropriate.
- The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is designed to support more natural interaction, additional voices and more proactive suggestions.
- BMW says the assistant could suggest Sport Mode on suitable roads after a driver has used it repeatedly, and learn to stop suggesting it when those prompts are consistently ignored.
- ConnectedDrive continues to provide third-party applications. BMW said Operating System 9 had more than 60 apps worldwide at the time of the January 2025 announcement; that was a time- and market-specific figure, not a permanent global total.
BMW also describes a gradual introduction of large-language-model technology for more natural voice interaction. At CES, a beta assistant build was demonstrated in a BMW X3 at Amazon’s booth. How it differs from earlier BMW iDrive
Earlier generations generally centered on a central display, with a rotary controller or touchscreen, optional conventional head-up display, voice control and model-dependent physical shortcuts. Operating System 9, used in models including the X1 and X2, moved toward a more touch-oriented interface and QuickSelect menu. BMW’s historical overview is at BMW.com.

BMW says the architecture is intended for gasoline, hybrid and electric vehicles, not only EVs. The Neue Klasse page provides the current corporate rollout context. Exact equipment still depends on the vehicle and market.
Can an existing BMW be upgraded?
Do not assume so. The complete experience depends on integrated hardware, including the windshield projection system, display electronics, steering wheel and—when selected—the 3D head-up display. A software update cannot automatically add those parts. Owners of BMWs using Operating System 7, 8, 8.5 or 9 should check their model’s update eligibility, but BMW’s CES announcement does not establish retrofit compatibility for Panoramic iDrive.

What buyers should verify
- Check the exact model, production date, market and trim equipment list.
- Confirm that BMW Panoramic Vision and the latest central display are included.
- Find out whether the multifunction steering wheel is standard for that configuration.
- Check whether the 3D head-up display is optional, included or unavailable.
- Ask which Operating System X version, BMW ID, ConnectedDrive services, data plan and third-party apps are supported.
- Test readability, steering-wheel controls, navigation presentation and the ability to reduce nonessential information during a drive.
There is no universal CES price for Panoramic iDrive or Operating System X. BMW integrates them into particular vehicles and packages, so pricing belongs in the official configurator and model-specific order sheet. Benefits and open questions
Potential benefits
- Key information can sit nearer the driver’s forward view.
- Tasks can be completed through several modes instead of relying on one screen.
- Profiles, routines and over-the-air software can become more central to the ownership experience.
- A common architecture could make the interface more consistent across BMW models.
Trade-offs and unresolved details
- A broad projection could distract if notifications are excessive or poorly timed; BMW’s CES material does not prove that it is safer than conventional displays.
- Drivers used to a rotary controller may face a learning curve.
- Option packaging means Panoramic iDrive vehicles may differ in available projection hardware.
- Voice, connected apps, AI features and data-dependent services can vary by country and account.
- BMW has not answered every practical question in the announcement, including sunlight and polarized-eyewear readability, widget limits, offline behavior, voice errors, privacy retention, left- versus right-hand-drive presentation and whether nonessential content can always be hidden. Those answers belong in the specific vehicle’s owner manual and market documentation.
Panoramic iDrive versus a conventional or smartphone-led cabin
The BMW system is not an aftermarket screen and is not a standalone software purchase. Its alternatives are different vehicle philosophies: Mercedes-Benz MBUX (Mercedes-Benz), Audi digital cockpit systems (Audi), or a car chosen primarily for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (Apple CarPlay; Android Auto). A simpler dashboard may suit drivers who dislike projected information, prefer a rotary controller or do not want to buy a new vehicle for interface technology.
Bottom line for current owners and prospective buyers
Panoramic iDrive is significant because BMW is treating the cabin as one coordinated software-and-hardware platform rather than a collection of separate screens. The CES 2025 demonstrator explains the direction; production vehicles determine the real equipment, usability and regional feature set. If the panoramic display and newer software architecture matter most, evaluate a Neue Klasse model such as the iX3 and verify its exact specification. If you value familiar controls or a vehicle available immediately, a current BMW may remain the better fit.
