If you want a conventional horizontal video, edit on a 16:9 canvas—such as 1920×1080 for 1080p—and choose whether to crop the source to fill the frame or fit the whole image inside it. For a square or vertical Short, use a square or vertical canvas instead.
Choose the right shape before resizing
Start by deciding where and how viewers will watch the video. YouTube supports aspect ratios beyond widescreen; the standard ratio for its computer player is 16:9, but the player adapts to the video and viewing device. YouTube advises against adding padding or black bars just to force a video into 16:9.

- Standard landscape video: Use a 16:9 canvas for a conventional horizontal composition.
- Square or vertical Short: Keep a square or vertical composition. YouTube’s computer upload guidance allows square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes; check YouTube’s current rules before uploading, since platform guidance can change.
Changing a video’s dimensions does not create detail that was absent from the original. Upscaling a small source to a larger canvas may increase its pixel dimensions, but it cannot restore missing image detail.
Pick export dimensions for a landscape video
YouTube lists several 16:9 dimensions. Choose based on the source quality and the resolution you want to deliver, rather than enlarging footage without a reason.

| Target resolution | Canvas dimensions | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 1280×720 | 16:9 |
| 1080p | 1920×1080 | 16:9 |
| 1440p | 2560×1440 | 16:9 |
| 4K | 3840×2160 | 16:9 |
These are YouTube-listed dimensions, not a requirement to export every video at the largest size. Higher-resolution versions can take longer to process after upload.
Resize a video in an editor
- Create a project or sequence at the target dimensions. For example, set a landscape project to 1920×1080 for 1080p or 1280×720 for 720p. For a Short, use a square or vertical canvas.
- Import the source clip and place it on the timeline. If its shape differs from the canvas, choose how the editor should fit it. The wording varies by editor; look for controls such as “Fit,” “Fill,” “Crop,” or “Scale.”
- Choose crop or fit deliberately. Crop or fill enlarges the image to cover the canvas, which can cut off edges. Fit preserves the full picture, but leaves unused space around it if the source and canvas have different shapes. If you use that space, choose a background treatment that suits the video rather than automatically adding black bars.
- Check the entire frame before export. Scrub through the video, especially near the edges, to make sure faces, text, subtitles, and other important details are not cropped. Adjust the framing if the subject moves.
- Export progressively at the source frame rate. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which the content was recorded. Common rates listed in its guidance include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 frames per second.
- Use a compatible export format. YouTube’s recommended upload settings include an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For SDR video, its guidance recommends BT.709 color space.
Set an appropriate bitrate
YouTube’s recommended SDR video bitrates are reference values, not mandatory caps. For SDR 1080p, its guidance lists 8 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those figures apply to the stated SDR resolution and frame-rate categories; do not treat them as universal settings for HDR or other resolutions.

- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
If your editor offers an export preset for YouTube, check its resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than assuming the preset matches your source. Keep the original frame rate where possible, and avoid changing resolution or frame rate without a delivery need.
Upload and check the result in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the exported video file and complete the upload details.
- After upload, check playback at the available resolutions. YouTube converts the file for playback across devices and network conditions; HD and 4K processing can take longer than lower-resolution processing.
If the highest resolution is not available immediately, allow processing time before concluding that the export failed. Confirm the original file plays correctly and that its export settings are as intended.

Fix common resizing problems
- The subject looks stretched or squashed: The image may have been resized without preserving its proportions. Reopen the editor’s fit or scale controls and preserve the source aspect ratio; use crop or fit to handle the mismatch.
- Important details disappear at the edges: The editor is likely filling the canvas by cropping. Reduce the scale, reposition the clip, or choose Fit to preserve the full frame.
- Bars or empty space appear around the video: The source and canvas have different shapes. Keep the complete image with a background treatment, or crop to fill if losing the edges is acceptable. Do not add permanent bars solely to make YouTube accept the video.
- The export looks no sharper than the source: Increasing pixel dimensions cannot recreate detail that the original footage did not capture. Export at a sensible target resolution instead of expecting an upscale to improve the source.
- HD or 4K playback is not ready after upload: Higher-quality processing may take longer. Wait for YouTube to finish processing, then check again.
Or let it run in the cloud
