What a “reset” does
A Terraria server does not erase a world through a general reset button. On startup, it looks for the world file specified by its configuration. If that file exists, the server loads it. If no matching file is found, Terraria creates a new world using the creation settings in the configuration.

That gives you three practical reset choices:

In every case, stop the server before touching files. Editing or deleting a world while the process is running can be overwritten by the next save or leave the world in an inconsistent state.
Prepare the server before resetting
1. Announce downtime
Tell players that the server will be unavailable and that characters may be disconnected. A reset changes the map for everyone, although player characters and inventories are separate from the world files.

2. Force a save
From the server console, type save. The official Terraria Wiki documents this command as a way to force a save before shutdown. Terraria also saves automatically at dawn, approximately every 24 minutes according to the Fandom guide, but do not rely on the automatic interval when you are about to replace a world.
3. Stop the process cleanly
Use the host panel’s Stop or Shutdown control, or stop the dedicated-server process from its terminal. Wait until the panel reports that the process has stopped and no console writes are still occurring.
4. Make a backup outside the live world folder
Copy the entire world-related set to a separate location before making changes. At minimum, preserve the primary .wld file and its .wld.bak backup. A tModLoader world can also have a matching .twld file, so include it in the backup. Give the copy a dated name that identifies the server and map.
Method A: Delete the world files permanently
Choose this method only when you have a separate backup and do not need a one-step rollback. Wabbanode’s tModLoader instructions identify the world’s .wld, .twld, and .wld.bak files; removing them cannot be undone through the server.
Hosted server panel
- Open the panel’s file manager and stop the Terraria server.
- Open the configured Worlds directory.
- Identify the files belonging to the configured world name. For tModLoader, look for the matching
.wld,.twld, and.wld.bakfiles. A vanilla server normally uses the.wldfile and its backup. - Download or copy the files if you have not already made an external backup.
- Delete the matching files, not unrelated worlds in the same folder.
- Start the server. Because the configured world no longer exists, Terraria creates a new world.
Do not delete serverconfig.txt unless you intentionally want to rebuild the server configuration. The reset requires removing the world files, not the server executable or configuration.

Self-hosted machine
- Stop the server and run
savefirst. - Open the Worlds folder identified by
worldpath=in the server configuration, or use the operating-system defaults listed below. - Move the matching world files to a backup directory rather than permanently deleting them. This gives you a recovery option while producing the same result for the server.
- Start the server and watch the console for world-generation messages.
If the old map loads after you believe it was deleted, the server is probably using a different worldpath= or a different filename than the one you edited.
Method B: Create a new world by changing the configured name
This is usually the safest reset because the original map remains untouched. Nodecraft notes that the world loaded at startup is controlled by lines 4 and 5 of serverconfig.txt. Akliz’s instructions use the world and worldname values: change them from the current name, often world, to a new name.
- Stop the server after forcing a save.
- Open
serverconfig.txtin the panel editor or a text editor. - Find the
world=entry and theworldname=entry. Keep the values consistent and choose a new base name, such asworld-season2. Follow the existing syntax in the file; do not add a second entry. - Save the configuration.
- Start the server. Terraria will not find a world under the new name and will generate one.
- Confirm that the new map loads, then inform players of the new world name and seed or difficulty if those settings matter to your community.
The previous .wld and related files stay in the Worlds folder under their original name. To return to them, stop the server and change world= and worldname= back to the original values.
Method C: Rename the existing files
Renaming is another reversible option when you want to leave the configuration unchanged. Nodecraft describes adding .old to the end of the world filename so the server no longer recognizes it as the configured world.
- Stop the server and force a final save.
- Open the Worlds folder.
- Rename the primary file by appending
.old. For example, changeworld.wldtoworld.wld.old. - Rename the matching
.wld.bakfile as well, for exampleworld.wld.baktoworld.wld.bak.old. If the world has a matching tModLoader.twldfile, preserve it with the same suffix so the old set remains together. - Start the server. Since the configured
.wldfilename is absent, Terraria creates a new world. - To restore the old map, stop the server, remove the added
.oldsuffix from each file, and start the server again.
Keep the base name and suffix changes exact. A typo can make the server generate another world or prevent it from finding the restored one.

Find the Worlds folder
The official Terraria Wiki states that worldpath= sets the world directory. If that option is not set, common self-hosted locations are:

A hosting panel may use a custom directory, and a self-hosted configuration can override the defaults. Read worldpath= before searching elsewhere. The world= setting points to the specific .wld file the server should load.
Understand the creation settings
Several entries affect a world only when Terraria is creating one. The official Wiki identifies these settings:
world=selects the world file used by the server.worldname=supplies the name used when creating a world.autocreate=controls automatic world creation.seed=supplies the seed for a newly generated map.difficulty=selects the difficulty for a newly generated map.
Changing seed=, difficulty=, or autocreate= does not transform an existing map. Those values matter only after the server fails to find the configured world and begins generation.
One forum report says an older build misread autocreate=2, which is commonly associated with a medium world. Treat that as a version-specific warning: verify the accepted values for the Terraria or tModLoader build you are actually running rather than assuming a value documented for another release.

Hosted-panel workflow and common differences
Control names vary between hosts, but the sequence is consistent:
- Use the console or panel to issue
save. - Stop the server and wait for a fully stopped state.
- Use the file manager to download or copy the world files.
- Choose deletion, renaming, or a configuration-name change.
- Save any edited configuration and start the server.
- Read the startup console to verify which world path and name were loaded or generated.
Some panels expose separate fields for the world file and display name instead of showing the raw configuration. If the panel has both, change both to the same new base name when creating a second world. If it provides only a world selector, confirm whether the selector updates world=, worldname=, or both before starting the server.

Vanilla worlds use the .wld format. tModLoader worlds can include an additional .twld file containing mod-related world data. A reset that removes only the visible .wld file may leave associated data behind, while a backup that omits .twld may not fully preserve a modded map.
- For a vanilla reset, handle the matching
.wldand.wld.bakfiles. - For tModLoader, include the matching
.wld,.twld, and.wld.bakfiles in the backup or rename set. - Restore a modded world with the same mod environment when possible; a map that depends on unavailable content may not behave as expected.
Verify that the reset worked
Check the startup log
The server should report that it is loading the selected world or creating a new one. If it immediately displays the old map’s name, the old file still exists at the configured path or the configuration change was not saved.
Join with a test account
Enter the world briefly and check a recognizable spawn area. A newly generated world should not contain the old map’s explored areas, structures, or placed storage. Leave again before inviting the full player group so you can stop and correct a mistake without new progress being added.
Confirm the file timestamp and name
After generation, the Worlds folder should contain a new file matching the configured name. The former world should either be absent because you deleted it, carry the .old suffix, or remain under its previous name while the configuration points elsewhere.
Troubleshooting
The old world still loads
- Recheck
world=andworldname=; the server may still point to the old base name. - Check
worldpath=; you may have edited a different Worlds folder. - Make sure the server was completely stopped before editing or renaming files.
- Look for duplicate files with similar names and extensions.
The server cannot find any world
- Confirm that
world=points to a valid path or filename in the syntax expected by your build. - Undo accidental changes to
serverconfig.txtand restore the last working copy. - Ensure the account running the server can read and write the Worlds directory.
A new world has the wrong size, seed, or difficulty
Review autocreate=, seed=, and difficulty=. These settings are applied during generation, not retroactively. Stop the server, remove or rename the incorrectly generated world, correct the settings, and start it again.
The restored world does not appear correctly
Stop the server and verify that every renamed file was restored to its original name, including .wld.bak and, for tModLoader, .twld. If the backup is intact, temporarily move the newly generated world elsewhere and restore the saved set as a unit.
Which reset method should you use?
- Use deletion only for a deliberate, permanent wipe backed by an independent copy.
- Use a new
worldnamewhen you want a clean map but may return to the old one or run both maps at different times. - Use renaming when you want the smallest reversible change and are comfortable managing the filename suffixes.
The essential condition is the same for all three: Terraria generates a new server world only when it cannot find the old world under the configured name. Preserve a backup until the new map has been tested and players have confirmed that the reset was intentional.
