Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Windows 11’s Microsoft-documented audio fixes are targeted checks, not a single control that resets every sound setting at once. Start with the selected output and volume, then use the steps for your specific symptom—such as sound failing in one app, distortion, a missing device, or a problem that began after an update.
Start with the output device and volume
-
Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
-
Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, or other device you want to use. If several devices are listed, make sure Windows is sending sound to the intended one.

If only one app has no sound
Check the app’s level and output route in Volume mixer before changing system-wide settings. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Find the affected app, confirm it is not muted, raise its volume, and check that its output device is the one you intend to use. Microsoft’s app-audio guidance
If sound is distorted, try another default format
Select the output device under Settings > System > Sound, open its Advanced options, and choose a different Default format. Test playback after changing it. There is no single format established as correct for every device, so use the option that works reliably with your hardware. Microsoft Support

If audio services appear stuck, restart them
Restarting Windows audio services can help when the audio system stops responding. Use the Services app and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. Microsoft’s broader sound troubleshooting guidance also identifies Remote Procedure Call (RPC). Service controls and permissions can vary; if Windows does not allow a restart or the issue continues, move on to the troubleshooter or driver checks. Microsoft Support
If the audio device is missing or sound still fails
Check the driver and whether Windows can detect the device. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Depending on what appears, update or reinstall the audio driver, then restart the PC. If the device is absent, check Device Manager for hidden or disabled devices and use Scan for hardware changes. When a driver is needed, Microsoft advises using the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s driver where appropriate. Microsoft’s driver troubleshooting guidance

Do not use Reset this PC just to reset audio
Reset this PC is a Windows recovery action, not an audio-settings reset. Microsoft says the Remove everything choice reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, apps, and settings. Use it only when you intend that broader recovery and understand its consequences—not as a routine next step for sound trouble. Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance
