What Resetting Visual Studio All Settings Actually Means
“Reset Visual Studio all settings” can mean different things depending on the symptom. Some problems are caused by user profile settings (IDE environment options), while others come from local caches, window layouts, or extensions.

A practical reset plan usually targets three layers: environment/user settings, local cache/state, and third-party extensions. You’ll see all of those in the methods below.
Before You Start: Prerequisites and What You’ll Lose
- Close Visual Studio before running commands or deleting state folders.
- Be ready to reconfigure environment preferences (theme, key bindings, window layout, debugger settings) if you do a full reset.
- If you rely on custom settings, consider exporting them first (Method 2).
- Use an account with permission to delete Visual Studio user folders in your Windows profile.
Method 1: Reset Visual Studio Settings Using the Command (devenv.exe)
This is the most direct “reset all settings” approach for the IDE environment. It resets user settings to defaults without requiring you to manually hunt down multiple folders.
Step-by-step
- Open Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio 2022 (or 2019). You can find it from the Windows Start menu.
- Find your Visual Studio installation path if needed. Common examples include:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\CommunityC:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\ProfessionalC:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Enterprise
- Run the reset command for the correct Visual Studio instance (adjust path and version as needed):
" then paste following command (example uses Community 2022). Replace the path with your real install folder and keep the quotes around it if you’re copying/pasting:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Community\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /resetsettings
Press Enter and wait for the command to complete.
Optional (more aggressive): if you want to also reset the data stored by the IDE user profile (not just settings), you can use:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Community\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /resetuserdata
After the reset, launch Visual Studio and confirm the symptom is gone.

Method 2: Reset Visual Studio Settings via the UI Import/Export Flow
If you’re the type of developer who tweaks everything and you don’t want to manually rebuild preferences from scratch, the UI import/export flow is a clean middle ground.
What this does
You can effectively restore defaults by exporting a known-good baseline, then re-importing settings—or just resetting back to a default set if your goal is to “undo” customizations.
Steps
- Open Visual Studio.
- Go to Tools > Import and Export Settings…
- Choose Reset all settings (or export first, then reset as your second step).
- Pick the target environment/profile when prompted (common if you use multiple VS instances/versions).
- Restart Visual Studio after the operation completes.
Pro tip: If you suspect a specific change, export your current settings first, then reset, then compare. That gives you a safe rollback option.
Method 3: Clear Local Cache and State (.vs folder)
When the problem feels “project-specific” (errors, IntelliSense glitches, odd solution behaviors, or state that won’t refresh), the fastest fix is often deleting the local cache and state.
What you’re deleting
The .vs folder inside your solution (or sometimes per-solution state). This includes local indexing, UI state, and cached metadata used by Visual Studio.
Steps
- Close Visual Studio.
- In Windows File Explorer, navigate to your solution folder (the one that contains the
.slnfile). - Delete the .vs folder.
- Reopen Visual Studio and let it rebuild indexes.
If you have multiple solutions, repeat per-solution. The important part: remove the state tied to the specific solution that’s misbehaving.
Method 4: Reset UI Layout and Window State
Sometimes “all settings reset” is overkill. If the symptom is mostly UI—dock/undock issues, panels that won’t show, menus out of place, or windows that keep jumping—resetting the UI layout is the targeted approach.

Steps to reset layout
- Open Visual Studio.
- Go to Window > Reset Window Layout.
- Confirm any prompts and restart Visual Studio if required.
This resets the window/pane arrangement back to Visual Studio defaults, without nuking everything like caches and extensions.

Method 5: Remove Extensions and Reset the MEF/Component Cache
Extensions are powerful—and occasionally they’re the reason Visual Studio settings appear to “not stick.” If resets don’t fix the issue, remove extensions and clear Visual Studio’s component cache.
Step 1: Run Visual Studio in Safe Mode (if available)
Try launching with extensions disabled (Visual Studio has a safe mode / extensions-disabled option depending on version). If the problem disappears, an extension is the culprit.
Step 2: Disable or remove extensions
- Open Extensions > Manage Extensions.
- Disable anything recently added or suspicious.
- Restart Visual Studio and test.
Step 3: Clear the MEF/component cache
Visual Studio uses the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) cache to load components. When it becomes corrupted, you can get settings/UI problems.
- Close Visual Studio.
- Delete the MEF cache folders under your Visual Studio user profile (commonly found in cache-related directories).
- Restart Visual Studio.
Method 6: Reset User Data Separately (When Settings Won’t Go Back)
Sometimes your “settings” reset, but user data (tool windows, logins, cached browsing state, or other persisted IDE data) keeps the behavior the same.
Use the user-data reset command
In that case, run the more aggressive user-data reset for your specific instance:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Community\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /resetuserdata
Then relaunch Visual Studio.
When this helps most
- The IDE looks reset, but features still act “as if nothing changed.”
- You’ve changed settings repeatedly and they revert after restart.
- IntelliSense or tooling prompts behave inconsistently across sessions.
Think of /resetsettings as “defaults for settings” and /resetuserdata as “wipe the persisted user-side experience.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Method 7: Check for Multiple Visual Studio Instances and Profiles
If you have more than one Visual Studio install (2019 + 2022, or Preview + stable), it’s easy to reset one instance while you keep launching another.
Quick checks
- Confirm which version you’re launching (Help > About in Visual Studio).
- If you use VS Preview, check whether you’re resetting Preview or Stable.
- Make sure the command you ran matches the correct installation path (Community vs Professional vs Enterprise).
Why this matters: When you reset the wrong instance, the symptom remains—and it looks like the reset “didn’t work,” even though it did exactly what you asked.
Troubleshooting: When the Reset Doesn’t Fix the Problem
If you’ve reset settings, cleared caches, and removed extensions (or at least disabled them) and the issue still persists, you need to pivot from “configuration restore” to “root cause isolation.”
Try these in order
- Update Visual Studio: Install the latest updates/servicing packages for your version.
- Repair the installation: Visual Studio Installer > More > Repair.
- Check file corruption: If only one solution is affected, try a new blank project and confirm the IDE is healthy.
- Test another user profile (Windows): If it works under a different Windows account, your profile data is the problem.
- Review logs: Visual Studio ActivityLog.xml can point to the component crashing or failing to load.
Once you isolate the scope (solution-only vs IDE-wide vs user-profile-only), the fix becomes much more obvious.

- Not closing Visual Studio before deleting
.vsor clearing caches. - Resetting the wrong instance (Preview vs stable, or 2019 vs 2022).
- Reinstalling/reenabling the same extension that caused the issue in the first place.
- Expecting project caches to vanish when you deleted only the wrong folder (remember:
.vsis per-solution). - Copying a command with the wrong install path (Community vs Professional vs Enterprise).
If you hit a “reset didn’t work” scenario, go back and verify each of these before assuming the IDE is unfixable.
Comparing the Methods: What Each One Resets
Here’s the practical way to choose: match the reset method to the likely layer causing the problem.
- Method 1 (
devenv.exe /resetsettings): environment/user settings back to defaults. - Method 2 (Import/Export Settings UI): reset or restore IDE settings via the built-in workflow.
- Method 3 (delete
.vsfolder): per-solution caches and state (indexing, tooling state). - Method 4 (Reset Window Layout): docking, panels, and window arrangement.
- Method 5 (disable extensions + MEF cache): extension-driven behavior and component loading problems.
- Method 6 (
devenv.exe /resetuserdata): persisted IDE user data beyond just settings. - Method 7 (check instances/profiles): ensures you’re resetting what you’re actually running.
FAQs
Will resetting Visual Studio delete my projects?
No. Resetting settings/user data/caches doesn’t delete your source code. Your project files remain in place. The main “data” you’ll lose is IDE configuration and local caches.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What’s the safest first step?
Try Reset Window Layout first for UI issues, or delete the solution’s .vs folder for tooling/indexing weirdness. They’re targeted and reversible.
Is /resetuserdata necessary?
Only if /resetsettings (or the UI-based reset) doesn’t solve it. Use the more aggressive reset when the behavior persists across sessions.
Do extensions always need to be removed?
Not always. Disabling them is usually enough to confirm whether they’re the cause. If disabling fixes it, you can re-enable one-by-one to identify the specific extension.
Bottom Line
If Visual Studio “won’t behave,” don’t guess—use the right reset layer. Start with the targeted fixes (UI layout reset or deleting the solution .vs cache), then move up to devenv.exe resets and extension/MEF cache cleanup if the issue persists.
In most cases, one of these methods restores a clean baseline quickly. If none of them work, the next step is to repair/update Visual Studio and check logs to pinpoint whether you’re dealing with an installation problem, a single-solution corruption, or an extension/component failure.
