1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo reset The End, stop the server, make a complete backup, ensure nobody is in the dimension, and remove only the End dimension folder used by your server. Vanilla Java usually stores it in world/DIM1, Paper and Bukkit commonly use world_the_end, and Minecraft 26.1 and newer use world/dimensions/minecraft/the_end. Restarting regenerates The End from the world seed, removing its builds and exploration data and restoring the Ender Dragon fight.

What a full End reset changes
A full reset deletes the saved copy of The End, not merely a few chunks. The next time the dimension loads, Minecraft generates a fresh End using the world’s seed. That removes player-built bases, storage rooms, farms, mined End gateways, explored terrain, and every other saved change inside the deleted directory.

The regenerated dimension includes a new central island and a new Ender Dragon fight. The reset does not selectively preserve an end city, a farm, or a portal platform. If you need to regenerate only damaged chunks, use a compatible world editor or region tool instead; that is a different, higher-risk operation and requires careful portal and region backups.
When you remove only the End directory, the Overworld and Nether directories remain intact. Do not delete the entire world folder: that would remove all dimensions and the world’s saved data.

Check these requirements before touching files
- Java Edition server: The paths below cover vanilla Java, Paper, Bukkit-based servers, and the newer 26.1-and-later layout. Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different storage format and is not covered by these instructions.
- Console or file access: You need permission to issue server commands and to rename, move, or delete files in the server’s save directory.
- A maintenance window: Players must leave The End before the server is stopped. Announce that all End builds and items in that dimension will be erased.
- A backup location with enough space: Keep the backup outside the live server directory when possible, and verify that it can actually be opened or restored.
- The configured level name: A server may not use the default folder name
world. The folder is based on the level name in the server configuration, so identify the real world directory first.
Find the correct End directory
The path depends on both the server software and the Minecraft version. Use the row that matches your installation rather than copying a path from a tutorial for another platform.
| Server or version | Typical End path | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Java, traditional save layout | world/DIM1 |
Replace world with the actual level name if it was customized. |
| Paper or Bukkit-based server | world_the_end |
The root names are commonly world, world_nether, and world_the_end, but the base name can differ. |
| Minecraft 26.1 and newer layout | world/dimensions/minecraft/the_end |
Use the world folder configured by the server; do not also delete an old DIM1 folder unless your installation actually uses it. |
If you are uncertain, inspect the save directory while the server is stopped and look for the folder containing The End’s data. Confirm the Minecraft version and server software in the startup panel or console. On Paper or Bukkit, world_the_end is normally a sibling of the Overworld folder, not a subfolder inside it. On the newer layout, the dimensions/minecraft/the_end path is nested under the world directory.

Safe full-reset procedure
- Warn players and empty The End. Ask everyone to return to the Overworld or disconnect. The Minecraft Wiki’s maintenance guidance gives the operational rule: “Ensure there are no players in that dimension, stop the server.” Do not proceed while a player, mob-management session, or automated process is still using the End.
- Save the world. From the server console, run
save-all. An operator can run the same command in game, but the console is preferable during maintenance. Wait for the save to complete. - Stop the server cleanly. Run
stopand wait until the server process exits. Do not kill the process, close the terminal, or delete files while region files are still being written. - Create a complete backup. Copy the entire server directory, or at minimum the world folder and any separate Nether and End folders, to a different location. Include the server configuration so you can identify the level name during a restore. A backup is the only reliable way to undo the deletion.
- Identify the layout. Use the table above and inspect the actual directory names. Check the server’s configured level name rather than assuming it is
world. - Move or delete only the End directory. Moving it to a dated backup location is safer than permanent deletion because you can restore it by stopping the server and putting it back. If you delete it, double-check the path and confirm that you are not selecting the whole world, the Nether directory, or a parent directory.
- Leave all other dimensions alone. Do not alter the Overworld folder, the Nether folder, player-data files, server properties, or plugin configuration as part of a standard End reset.
- Start the server again. Minecraft will create the End’s files when the dimension is first accessed. Startup may complete without visibly generating the dimension until someone enters it.
- Test with an administrator account. Enter The End through the normal portal and check that the central island and terrain are newly generated. Confirm that the Overworld and Nether still contain their original builds. If you use a custom portal or teleport system, test that route as well.
Instructions for each common layout
Vanilla Java with DIM1
Stop the server, open the configured world folder, and locate DIM1 directly beneath it. Move or remove that directory only. In a traditional vanilla save, DIM1 is the complete saved dimension for The End, so its removal resets both generated terrain and player changes there.

- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
Do not confuse DIM1 with the Nether’s older dimension directory or with a similarly named backup. Keep the original folder until you have confirmed that the new End works.
Paper and Bukkit with a separate End world
Paper and Bukkit commonly use separate root directories: an Overworld directory, a Nether directory with a _nether suffix, and an End directory with a _the_end suffix. If the configured world is named survival, for example, the End directory may be named survival_the_end rather than world_the_end.
Move or remove only that End sibling directory after a clean shutdown. Deleting DIM1 inside the Overworld will not reset a Paper/Bukkit server that stores The End separately, and deleting the base world directory will reset much more than intended.

Minecraft 26.1 and newer
The newer save layout places the End at world/dimensions/minecraft/the_end. Replace world with the actual level name, then move or remove the the_end directory under dimensions/minecraft. Confirm the server is actually running the newer layout before changing files; older guides that mention only DIM1 may not apply.
If a migration or upgrade left multiple old-looking folders, do not guess. Make a backup, check which directory changes when you enter The End, and use the folder that belongs to the currently configured world and version.
What happens after the restart
Terrain and builds
The first access after deletion causes Minecraft to generate new End terrain from the world’s seed. Every saved block change in the removed directory is gone: bridges, homes, farms, chests, mined gateways, and decorative structures will not return unless they exist in your backup and you restore the old directory.

The Ender Dragon
The fresh End restores the initial Dragon encounter. Any previous Dragon-kill state and changes associated with the old End are not carried into the newly generated dimension. Players should prepare for the normal first fight rather than expecting the old arena state.

A targeted End-directory reset does not regenerate the Overworld or Nether. Their terrain and builds remain as long as you did not delete or replace their directories. Keep the backup anyway: a wrong path, a plugin that manages worlds, or an interrupted shutdown can produce a result different from the intended one.

Deleting the whole world
Symptom: Overworld and Nether builds, inventories, or world progress appear missing. Cause: The parent world directory or the entire server save was removed instead of only the End directory. Recovery: Stop the server immediately, preserve the current files for diagnosis, and restore the complete pre-reset backup. Do not generate more terrain before restoring; new writes can complicate recovery.

Deleting while the server is running
Symptom: The old End returns, files are recreated unexpectedly, or the world reports corruption. Cause: The server still had open region files or wrote a copy after the deletion. Recovery: Stop cleanly, restore the backup, and repeat the operation during a proper maintenance window.
Using DIM1 on Paper or Bukkit
Symptom: The End looks unchanged after restart. Cause: The server stores the dimension in a separate directory such as world_the_end. Recovery: Stop the server, identify the actual configured level name, and inspect the sibling directories. Move only the matching _the_end directory, then restart.
Using an old path on 26.1 or newer
Symptom: Removing a legacy folder has no effect. Cause: The active save uses dimensions/minecraft/the_end. Recovery: Verify the version, locate that nested directory under the active world, and repeat the reset with a fresh backup.
Players or plugins still entering The End
Symptom: The dimension is regenerated while someone is online, or a plugin restores old structures. Cause: A player, portal manager, schematic system, or scheduled task continued operating during maintenance. Recovery: Stop the server, disable the conflicting automation temporarily, and repeat the reset. Keep a copy of the pre-reset directory until the result is verified.
Can you automate recurring End resets?
Yes. A reset plugin for Spigot or Paper can provide a command that removes and regenerates The End, and some plugins advertise resetting it on every server restart. Automation does not remove the need for a backup or a compatibility check. Confirm the plugin supports your Minecraft version, server software, world-management plugins, and the directory layout in use.

Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- The server process was fully stopped before any folder was moved or deleted.
- No players remained in The End at shutdown.
- A restorable backup exists outside the live save directory.
- You selected exactly one End directory matching the software and version.
- The Overworld and Nether directories were not altered.
- The server restarted without save errors.
- An administrator confirmed that The End regenerated and the Dragon fight is available.
