How to Reset Network Adapter Settings in Windows 11 with Advanced Network Reset

How to reset network adapter settings in Windows 11 using Advanced network settings, what the reset removes, and what to restore afterward.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reset network adapter settings in Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, select Reset now, confirm with Yes, and let the PC restart. Windows removes the installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after the restart.

Step-by-step: run Network reset in Windows 11

  1. Select Start, type Settings, and open it.
  2. Select Network & internet.
  3. Select Advanced network settings.
  4. Select Network reset.
  5. Select Reset now, then select Yes to confirm.
  6. Wait for Windows to restart the PC. Do not test the connection before the restart finishes.
  7. After the restart, test the connection that was failing.

These labels belong to Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows 10 instructions use a different route, so if your menus do not match these names, confirm which Windows version you are running before following the steps.

What the reset changes

  • Removed: the installed network adapters and their settings.
  • Reinstalled: the adapters are rebuilt by Windows after the restart, with default settings.
  • Not changed by this step: the Network reset option does not reinstall Windows. That is a separate operation covered in the comparison below.

Because the settings return to defaults, any custom network configuration on the PC will need to be set up again.

After the reset: what you may need to restore

VPN clients and virtual switches

Some users will need to reinstall and configure VPN client software, Hyper-V virtual switches, or other network virtualization software. Check these first if a VPN or virtual machine stopped working after the reset.

Network profile and sharing

Known connections may be switched to the Public network profile. A Public profile hides the PC from other devices. A Private profile allows discoverability and file and printer sharing. Microsoft says to use Private only for a network you trust. If other devices cannot see this PC or its shared files and printers, check the profile of the connection under Network & internet settings. See Microsoft’s overview of essential network settings and tasks.

Where Network reset fits in the troubleshooting order

Microsoft describes Network reset as a last step, and its wording is direct: “Using network reset should be the last step you try.” Run the less disruptive checks first. The table below compares the options.

Limits of this guidance

  • A reset is not a guaranteed fix. After the restart, check whether the connection problem is resolved. Microsoft’s guidance does not promise that Network reset repairs every connectivity fault.
  • The cited Microsoft guidance describes the general Windows 11 path. It does not cover version-by-version differences or menu changes made by PC manufacturers, so label wording may vary on some devices.
