Windows 11’s documented workflow is to change defaults by file type or by app; Microsoft does not establish a universal button that resets every file association on every Windows 11 PC.
Change the default app for one file type

Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.

In the search box, enter the file extension you want to fix, such as

Open a file of that type to check that it launches in the intended app.

Windows may offer more than one installed app for a type. Pick the one you prefer. Microsoft’s instructions cover changing defaults by file or link type and by app: Change default apps in Windows.
Change defaults from an app’s settings
If you know which app you want to use, open its entry in Settings > Apps > Default apps. Windows shows the file types and link types the app supports. Select the type you want to change, then choose the preferred app.

What if you mean reset every association?
Microsoft’s current support instructions explain how to change defaults by type or by app, but they do not confirm a universal reset-all control or establish where one is available across Windows 11 builds, regions, or managed devices. For a specific problem, change the affected type using the steps above rather than relying on an all-associations reset.
Reset this PC is not a file-association repair. That process reinstalls Windows and can remove apps, settings, and personal files. It is a much broader operation than changing which app opens a file type. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance before considering it for a separate Windows problem.

Check that you are changing the right file type
A file name has a name and an extension separated by a period. In expenses.xlsx, for example, .xlsx identifies the file type and helps Windows determine which apps can open it. Changing a suffix such as .pdf or .jpg does not convert the file’s format, so renaming is not a way to repair its default app.
If File Explorer is hiding extensions, turn them on with View > Show > File name extensions. Microsoft explains extensions and the Open with options in File name extensions.

If you do not recognize the extension or app
Right-click the file and choose Open with > Choose another app to see installed apps that may handle it. You can also look for a compatible app in the Microsoft Store by searching for the extension or choosing Open with > Search the Microsoft Store.

For managed or deployment scenarios
On an enterprise-managed Windows 11 device, an administrator can set defaults for file and link types. Microsoft’s compliance report describes changing defaults by type or app and browsing registered types: Manage Windows 11 endpoints. Microsoft’s DISM and XML instructions are for administrators preparing or servicing Windows images, not the routine fix for one user’s file: Export or import default application associations.
