If your Bluetooth headphones will not reconnect, start by checking power, Bluetooth, and the saved connection; a factory reset is usually a later step. Reset buttons and procedures vary by model, so find the exact model name and use its official instructions rather than trying a button combination meant for another headset.
Before you reset: identify the headphones and the action you need
Look for the model name on the headband, earcup, charging case, or in the playback device’s Bluetooth details. Then distinguish three actions that are often confused:

- Forget or remove: deletes the saved headphone entry from a phone or computer. It does not, by itself, reset the headphones.
- Enter pairing mode: makes the headphones discoverable so a device can connect. This is not necessarily a factory reset.
- Factory reset or initialization: restores some or all headphone settings. Depending on the model, it may also erase stored pairing information.
Use the manufacturer’s support page or manual for the identified model before holding buttons. Official procedures differ even among products from the same brand.

- Charge and power on both devices. Confirm the headphones have charge and are switched on, and that the phone, tablet, or computer is working normally.
- Check Bluetooth and audio output. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the playback device and that sound is routed to the headphones rather than another speaker or output.
- Bring the devices close together. Sony’s guidance for the products covered by its pairing article is to keep the headset and source device within 1 meter (3 feet). Apple’s Beats troubleshooting advises keeping the devices within 30 feet and moving them away from other Bluetooth devices, microwaves, wireless routers, and other electronics. Follow the more specific instructions for your model.
- Refresh the connection if needed. Toggle Bluetooth off and on or restart the playback device where appropriate. Bose includes power-cycling and toggling Bluetooth among its general troubleshooting suggestions.
Forget the old connection and pair again
If the device has an outdated saved entry, remove it before trying a fresh connection. Apple’s Beats troubleshooting recommends forgetting the product on the source device and pairing it again. Menu labels can vary by operating-system version.

- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the Beats device, then tap Forget This Device.
- Mac: Open System Settings > Bluetooth and remove the Beats product from the device list.
For headphones from another brand, use the equivalent Bluetooth device-list control on your phone or computer. Removing the saved entry is different from resetting the headphones; follow the model’s own instructions for putting them into pairing mode.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode using the exact procedure in their manual.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the playback device and select the headphones when they appear.
- Complete any on-screen pairing prompt, then check that audio is playing through the headphones.
Use the model-specific reset only if pairing still fails
Do not assume one brand’s or model’s button sequence applies to another. For example, Sony says that applicable products can enter pairing mode by holding the POWER or Multi-function button for about 7 seconds; its article explicitly directs users to check their model’s manual. That is a pairing-mode example, not a universal reset instruction.

Reset instructions also vary within a brand. Apple’s Beats reset guide lists different controls for different products, including 15-second holds for several listed earbud procedures. Check the guide’s model-specific instructions instead of copying a sequence across Beats products.
Some factory initialization procedures erase pairing information. Sony’s ULT WEAR guide, for example, says that holding its power and NC/AMB buttons together for about 10 seconds initializes that specific model, restores factory settings, and deletes pairing information. Sony then instructs users to remove the headset’s old entry from the connected device and pair it again. Do not use this button combination on a different model.

Bose’s QuietComfort Headphones Owner’s Guide cautions: “Restoring to factory settings is only recommended if you are having issues with the headphones, or you have been instructed to do so by Bose customer service.” Check the guide for your exact product before proceeding; not every product’s factory reset has the same effect on stored pairings.

- Check that you followed the instructions for the exact model, including how it signals pairing mode.
- Remove any stale saved entry from the playback device if the manufacturer recommends doing so, then retry pairing mode.
- Consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page or contact its support team rather than repeating an unverified button sequence.
Persistent failure after initialization can indicate a hardware problem, but the diagnosis is model-specific. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 troubleshooting guidance, for example, says that continued problems after initialization may require repair; that does not establish the cause for other headphones.
