How to Reset an HP Wireless Mouse: USB Receiver, Bluetooth, and Default Settings

HP wireless mice do not share one universal reset. Identify the connection type, then follow the right steps for the receiver, Bluetooth pairing, or supported settings reset.

There is no single reset procedure for every HP wireless mouse. First identify whether it connects through a USB receiver or Bluetooth. Reseating a USB receiver can restore its connection, while Bluetooth mice may need to be paired again; restoring device settings to defaults is a separate option available only on supported models.

Start with power and connection type

Turn the mouse on and check for a packaging tab. Recharge it or install fresh batteries as appropriate for the model. Some receivers are stored in a compartment in the mouse, and some may already be plugged into the computer.

Next, determine how the mouse connects: a small USB receiver indicates a receiver-based connection; a Bluetooth mouse pairs through the computer’s Bluetooth settings. If you are unsure, check the documentation for the exact model.

Reset a USB receiver connection

  1. Connect the receiver directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub.
  2. Move the mouse close to the receiver. HP suggests a typical distance of 30 cm (1 ft) or less, and advises clearing nearby obstacles or potential interference sources such as TVs, cordless phones, and speakers.
  3. Remove the receiver from its port, wait 10 seconds, then connect it to a different USB port. HP recommends trying a port on the opposite side of the computer.

This reseats the receiver connection; it does not necessarily re-pair the mouse with the receiver. If the mouse and receiver have become unpaired, use the instructions for that specific model. HP’s general guidance does not provide one re-pairing procedure that applies to every receiver-based mouse. See HP’s wireless mouse troubleshooting guide.

Reconnect a Bluetooth HP mouse

  1. Make sure the mouse is on and Bluetooth is enabled on the computer.
  2. Put the mouse in pairing mode using the model’s instructions.
  3. In Windows, open Bluetooth and other devices settings, choose Add Bluetooth or other device, and follow the prompts to select the mouse.

For the HP Bluetooth Travel Mouse specifically, HP also recommends turning the mouse off and on, removing it from the computer’s paired-device list and pairing it again, and updating the computer’s Bluetooth driver. Those are Travel Mouse instructions, not a universal reset for all HP Bluetooth mice. HP lists Bluetooth 4.2 or later and Windows 11 or macOS High Sierra (10.13) or later as requirements for that model. See HP’s Bluetooth Travel Mouse setup guidance.

Restore default settings on supported models

For the HP Bluetooth Travel Mouse, HP documents a settings reset in HP Accessory Center: open the app, choose Settings, select Device Reset, then choose Reset to default next to the device. The app’s reset feature is for supported devices, so confirm that your mouse is compatible before relying on it. This restores settings; it is distinct from reconnecting a receiver or pairing a Bluetooth mouse again. See HP Accessory Center guidance.

Work out whether the mouse, computer, or surface is the problem

  • Try another USB port or computer: Test the mouse on a second working computer. If it works there, continue checking the original computer’s settings or connection. If it fails there too, HP says the mouse might be defective.
  • Check tracking conditions: Use a clean, flat, nontransparent surface. Clean the sensor lens and scroll wheel if tracking or scrolling is unreliable.
  • Check the computer: HP recommends reviewing relevant Windows mouse settings, installing available Windows updates, and running the mouse/touchpad component tests in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

If the mouse still fails after power, connection, and second-computer checks, replacement may be appropriate. Confirm the new mouse’s connection type and compatibility with your computer before buying.
