If the tablet is frozen or Settings will not open, use Recovery Mode instead. A completed reset removes downloaded content and deregisters the tablet from your Amazon account.
Before resetting: back up data and check storage
- Save anything you need. A factory reset removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and restores factory settings. Amazon’s reset instructions recommend safely ejecting expandable storage first if needed.
- Check Backup and Restore. When enabled, the feature backs up certain information to Amazon’s cloud while the tablet is idle and connected to Wi-Fi. Amazon lists settings, email and wireless configurations, bookmarks, search history, and more. Its Backup and Restore FAQ says backups are encrypted in the cloud and can help restore a device after a reset.
- Do not assume every personal file is included. Amazon distinguishes device Backup and Restore from cloud storage for personal photos, videos, and files. Check that important files are preserved separately.
- Handle a microSD card separately. Safely eject expandable storage before resetting if needed. Amazon’s reset guidance does not state that the reset erases the card, so remove it and preserve or delete its contents separately if you are giving away or trading in the tablet.
After a successful reset, the Fire tablet is deregistered. It loses access to your Amazon account, purchased content, and Amazon services on that device until you register it again. See Amazon’s deregistration guidance for details.

This is the path in Amazon’s current Fire tablet reset instructions. The tablet restarts into its initial setup screens when the reset is complete.

Recovery Mode is the fallback for a frozen tablet or one that cannot open Settings. Amazon says the button combination below works on most Fire tablets; exact behavior can vary by model.

- Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
- Stay up to speed — Use the 5 MP front-facing camera to Zoom with family and friends, or create content for social apps like Instagram and TikTok.
- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
- Power the tablet off.
- Press and hold Power and Volume Down together until Recovery Mode appears.
- Use the volume buttons to move through the menu.
- Choose Wipe data/factory reset with the power button, then confirm.
These steps follow Amazon’s Recovery Mode instructions. The reset removes downloaded content, restores factory settings, and deregisters the tablet just as the Settings reset does.
If the problem is Wi-Fi, try a narrower fix first
A full reset removes more than network settings. If the tablet otherwise works and the issue is connectivity, Amazon recommends checking Airplane Mode, network credentials, distance and interference; restarting the tablet and router; resetting network settings; checking for software updates; and testing with a phone hotspot. If several devices cannot connect, Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider. See Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

Preparing a tablet for sale, gifting, or trade-in
Back up or remove personal data, then complete the factory reset before handing the tablet over. A successful reset deregisters it automatically, so a separate manual deregistration is generally unnecessary when the reset completes. Amazon’s trade-in preparation guidance says owners are responsible for removing personal data before shipping or drop-off. Take out any microSD card and handle its files separately.
