How to Reset a Sony DAV-DZ310: Power Cycle, Setup Reset, and Cold Reset

Reset a Sony DAV-DZ310 with the right procedure for the problem: power cycle first, use the DVD setup reset for selected settings, or perform a cold reset on the main unit.

For a Sony DAV-DZ310 that is not responding normally, start by unplugging its AC power cord for several minutes and reconnecting it. If that does not help, Sony’s broader cold reset is performed with the system on: press N, FUNCTION, and /1 (power) together on the main unit. The front panel should display “COLD RESET.” This reset can erase saved system settings, so use the narrower DVD setup reset if you only want to restore setup values.

Choose the right reset for the problem

The DAV-DZ310 offers three different recovery options. A power cycle interrupts power without intentionally restoring settings; the DVD menu’s [RESET] option restores selected setup values; the cold reset restores broader system parameters. Sony’s DAV-DZ310 manuals listing provides the model’s operating instructions, which describe these procedures.

Option What it does When to use it What to expect
Power cycle Disconnects and reconnects AC power; it is not described as a settings reset. The system does not work normally and you want to try the preliminary step in Sony’s manual. Wait several minutes before reconnecting. If the problem remains, try a cold reset.
DVD setup [RESET] Returns [SETUP] settings to default, except [PARENTAL CONTROL]. It also returns [MEDIA], [INTERVAL], [EFFECT], and [MULTI/2CH] to their defaults. You can use the DVD setup menus and want to reset those values rather than broader system parameters. Do not turn off the unit while the reset is in progress; it takes several seconds.
Cold reset Restores broader system parameters, including preset stations, to defaults. The system remains abnormal after a power cycle, or a broader settings reset is needed. Use the main unit’s button combination. Expect to restore personal settings such as presets.

How to power cycle the DAV-DZ310

  1. Turn the system off if it is on.
  2. Unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait several minutes, then reconnect the power cord.
  4. Turn the system on and check whether it works normally.

If it is still malfunctioning, Sony’s manual directs users to the cold-reset procedure.

How to perform a cold reset

  1. Turn on the DAV-DZ310.
  2. On the main unit, press N, FUNCTION, and /1 (power) at the same time. Use the controls on the unit rather than trying to perform the simultaneous press with a remote.
  3. Confirm that the front panel displays “COLD RESET.”

Sony’s operating instructions say that system parameters, including preset stations, return to their default settings. You may need to set up the system again to your preferences. The manual describes a user reset; it does not say that a cold reset repairs a hardware fault.

How to use the DVD setup [RESET] option

Choose this menu option when you want to restore the DVD setup values without using the broader cold reset. Open the DVD setup menus and select [RESET] in [SETUP]. The menu option restores [SETUP] settings to default except [PARENTAL CONTROL], and also resets [MEDIA], [INTERVAL], [EFFECT], and [MULTI/2CH]. Do not switch off the system during the several seconds the reset takes.

What to do if “PROTECTOR” appears

If “PROTECTOR” and “PUSH POWER” alternate, treat the message as a warning to check the system rather than as a prompt to reset it. Sony’s operating instructions advise turning the system off and waiting until “STANDBY” disappears, then checking for short-circuited speaker cords and blocked ventilation holes.

  2. Check whether any speaker cords are short-circuited and whether ventilation holes are blocked.
  3. If you find a problem, correct it and turn the unit on again.
  4. If the cause is unclear or the warning persists, consult a Sony dealer.

When to contact Sony service

  • “LOCKED” with a disc that will not eject: Sony says to contact a Sony dealer or authorized service facility.
  • A self-diagnosis code beginning “E XX”: Contact a Sony dealer or authorized service facility and provide the five-character service number shown by the system.
  • A persistent “PROTECTOR” warning: If checking wiring and ventilation does not resolve it, ask a Sony dealer to diagnose the system.

These issues are not presented in the operating instructions as problems a settings reset will fix. Avoid service-manual test-mode procedures; the consumer cold reset above is the relevant user reset.

Manuals and remote-control details

Sony Asia lists English operating-instruction PDFs dated 12 March 2010 and 18 November 2009 on its DAV-DZ310 manuals page. Sony India’s specifications page identifies the model as a DVD home theater system and lists HDMI output, USB, FM radio, and a five-speaker-plus-subwoofer configuration; those features do not change what the reset procedures do.
