You can reset a locked Samsung Galaxy Note 3 through Android System Recovery using its physical buttons. This is a factory reset, not a way to discover or bypass the forgotten password: it erases personal data stored on the phone, and setup may still ask you to verify the Google account previously used on it.
Before you reset the Note 3
- Assume local data will be erased. The recovery option deletes personal data. If photos or other files were not backed up, do not expect the reset to recover them.
- Have the Google account details ready. After the reset, the phone may request the Google email and password previously associated with it. The exact prompt can vary by firmware and account state.
- Use this only on a phone you own or are authorized to manage. A reset does not remove account-protection checks.
The steps below follow iFixit’s Galaxy Note 3 recovery guide, last updated April 8, 2020. Button timing and menu wording may vary on regional variants or different firmware.
Reset the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with its buttons
- Turn the phone completely off.
- Press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power together.
- When the “GALAXY Note 3” logo appears, release Power. Keep holding Volume Up and Home.
- When the Android System Recovery menu appears, release the remaining buttons.
- Use the volume keys to highlight “wipe data / factory reset”, then press Power to select it.
- Highlight “Yes — erase all user data” and press Power.
- When the recovery menu returns, select “reboot system now” with the Power button.
The phone will restart and show its initial setup process. A computer or USB cable is not required for this recovery-menu procedure.
Complete setup if Google account verification appears
A successful wipe does not necessarily make the phone ready to use. Samsung says a button-based reset can trigger Google Device Protection, which may require the Google email and password associated with the device. Samsung Korea describes Factory Reset Protection as applying to devices released with Android 5.1 or later and requiring the previously registered Google account after resets performed outside Settings. Since the exact Android build and account status of an individual Note 3 are not established here, treat verification as possible rather than certain.

- If you know the Google email but not its password, use Google Account Recovery before continuing setup.
- If you recently changed the password, Samsung UK advises that it may take 24 hours or longer to become active for device verification.
- If you cannot recall the account details, contact Samsung support or an authorized Samsung service provider in your region. Samsung UK suggests bringing proof of purchase to an authorized Service Centre.
If you have forgotten the screen lock
Samsung’s forgotten-lock guidance says a forgotten screen lock requires full device initialization and that unbacked-up data is deleted and cannot be recovered. The Note 3 user manual for model SM-N9005 states: “If the unlock code is forgotten, take the device to a Samsung Service Centre to reset it.” If you cannot complete the recovery steps or establish account access, use Samsung’s support route for your region rather than trying to bypass account protection.
