After installing a replacement filter, reset the reminder using the control or touchscreen steps for your refrigerator model. Many Samsung control panels use a three-second button hold, but the button varies; Family Hub and some older touchscreen models use menus.
Reset the light on a standard control panel
- Replace the water filter with one that matches your refrigerator model.
- Look for a button labeled Filter Reset (3 sec) or a secondary reset function printed on a control.
- Press and hold the labeled control for three seconds. Depending on the model, the indicator may turn off, change color, or return to its normal state.
Samsung lists Alarm, Water Filter, and Ice/Water among the buttons that may serve as the reset control. Some models require two buttons to be pressed together, so do not assume the same button works across the range. If the panel does not match these instructions, use the manual for your exact model. Use the touchscreen route that matches your refrigerator
Family Hub
- From Home, tap Apps.
- Open Fridge Manager, then Fridge Settings.
- Tap Water Filter > Reset > Proceed.
Older RF4289 and RSG309 models
- Open Settings > Water Filter.
- Tap Next until page 4/4 appears.
- Touch and hold Reset the water filter until the filter status changes, then tap Save.
Other arrow-button displays
On some models, use the arrow controls to open More Options, then choose Filter Reset. Menu labels and steps vary by model; Samsung’s US instructions cover this interface variant.
Why reset only after replacing the filter
The indicator is a timer-based replacement reminder. Resetting it restarts the reminder cycle; it does not clean, renew, or replace the cartridge. Samsung Canada recommends changing filters about every six months, while noting that water quality and usage can affect the practical interval. A noticeable reduction in flow with the filter installed compared with without it can also indicate that replacement is due. Samsung Canada explains the timer and replacement guidance.

Find a filter that fits your exact model
Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same cartridge. Check the refrigerator’s model number and manual, or note the number printed on the currently installed filter, before ordering. Samsung’s Canada filter finder helps identify a filter by refrigerator model. Samsung recommends genuine filters in its Canadian guide; regardless of brand, do not rely on a generic compatibility claim without confirming the exact match.
Replace and flush the filter safely
Cartridge handling depends on the model and filter type, so follow the refrigerator manual and the instructions for the replacement cartridge. Samsung’s Canadian guide describes shutting off the water supply, relieving pressure by dispensing water, removing and fitting the cartridge, checking that it locks, restoring the supply, and checking for leaks. Reset the indicator after installation.

Flush the system and discard the water as directed for your model and filter. For the filter types covered by its Canadian guide, Samsung specifies dispensing and discarding about seven minutes of water or 10–12 large glasses. That amount is not a universal instruction for every model or region.

The reset control does nothing
Confirm that the replacement filter is installed, then use the reset button or menu for the exact model. If a three-second hold does not work, the panel may use another button or a combination; check the model’s manual rather than trying random controls.

Water flow is still slow
Check that the cartridge is fully inserted and locked, then dispense more water to clear air from the system. Samsung notes that a flow difference can also signal that a filter needs replacement.
The water tastes or smells unusual, or the filter leaks
Flush more water if the taste or smell is unusual. If the filter leaks, reinstall it fully. If leakage continues, Samsung says the O-ring may be damaged and recommends a new genuine filter. Check the cartridge and refrigerator instructions for the correct fit and installation.

A warning appears even though the refrigerator has no filter
This is not a reason to assume every filterless refrigerator needs a cartridge. Samsung UK describes a software issue affecting certain RS70F, RS80F, and RS90F refrigerators manufactured before July 2025, with update guidance through SmartThings. Check Samsung UK’s instructions to see whether the notice applies to your model.

Color meanings depend on the model. Samsung’s UK guidance for a particular model family describes blue as reset, purple after six months, and red as the replacement point; do not apply that sequence to every Samsung refrigerator. Consult your model’s manual if the color is unclear.
