There is no single reset procedure for every mouse. First identify whether it connects by Bluetooth or by a USB receiver: re-pair a Bluetooth mouse in your laptop’s Bluetooth settings, while a receiver-based mouse needs its USB receiver reconnected. Any factory-reset button or sequence depends on the mouse model.
Identify how the mouse connects
Check the mouse, its manual, or the small USB receiver that came with it. A Bluetooth mouse pairs through the laptop’s Bluetooth settings. A wireless mouse that uses a USB receiver communicates through that receiver; it will not appear as a Bluetooth device, so searching the Bluetooth device list will not reconnect it. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes these connection paths in its mouse and keyboard troubleshooting steps.

Check power and basic operation
- Recharge the mouse or replace its battery if it uses replaceable batteries.
- Switch the mouse off and back on, and keep it within range of the laptop.
- For Bluetooth models, make sure the mouse is in pairing mode. Microsoft notes that “Some Bluetooth devices do not enter pairing mode or maintain a connection when the battery is low” in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
Reset a Bluetooth mouse connection in Windows
These steps remove the saved pairing and add the mouse again; they are not a universal factory reset. Keep the mouse powered on and in pairing mode while adding it back.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Find the mouse, select More options (…), then choose Remove device.
- Select Add device, choose the Bluetooth option, and select the mouse when it appears.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Select the mouse and choose Remove device.
- Choose Add Bluetooth or other device, then select the mouse when it appears.
If Windows still cannot find or connect to the mouse, Microsoft also recommends toggling Bluetooth, checking Windows Update, and restarting the laptop.

Reconnect a mouse that uses a USB receiver
- Unplug the receiver from the laptop, wait briefly, then plug it back in.
- If the mouse still does not work, try another USB port.
- Check the mouse or receiver for a reset button. Some wireless devices have one, but its location and procedure vary by model; follow that model’s manual rather than assuming a universal button-hold duration.
Microsoft describes resetting some wireless devices as disconnecting and reconnecting the wireless connection; HP’s wireless mouse troubleshooting instructions also cover receiver-related checks.
Find out whether the problem is the mouse or the laptop
- Try the mouse on another computer, if available. If it fails there too after checking its power and connection, consult the manufacturer’s support for the exact model.
- If you use a receiver, test another device in the laptop’s USB port. If that device also fails, the port may be the issue.
- If the mouse works on another computer, focus on the laptop’s Bluetooth settings or USB port, depending on how the mouse connects.
When a model-specific reset is necessary
Some mice have a reset button or a specific reset sequence, but there is no procedure that applies to every brand and model. Check the mouse’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page for instructions tied to its exact model. The Windows pairing steps above restore a Bluetooth connection; they do not establish that the mouse has been returned to factory settings.
