You can factory reset a locked Samsung Galaxy tablet without its screen password by using the hardware buttons to open recovery mode and choosing “Wipe data/factory reset.” The reset erases everything stored on the tablet and can’t be undone. Afterward, Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) may ask for the Google account that was last signed in on the tablet. A reset gets you past the forgotten screen lock. It doesn’t remove ownership checks.
Before you reset: what you will lose
- Local data is deleted. Samsung’s support pages say a factory reset removes personal data from the device and is not reversible. Its Philippines tablet page puts it this way: “Factory Resetting a mobile device is not reversible.” If any route still lets you back up, such as Samsung Cloud or a computer connection that was already authorized, use it first. A locked tablet usually doesn’t allow that.
- Encrypted microSD cards need attention. Samsung US says an encrypted microSD card must be decrypted before a reset. Otherwise the tablet may not be able to read its data afterward.
- Charge the tablet. Samsung US recommends keeping the device on a wall charger, because a reset “may take up to an hour.” Use the charger and cable that fit your model. You don’t need to buy anything special.
- Know your Google account. Make sure you can sign in to the Google account that was on the tablet (see the FRP section below).
Reset a locked Galaxy tablet with the buttons
These steps follow Samsung UK’s instructions for a factory reset on a tablet using the buttons. Samsung says button combinations, menu names and layouts differ by model and software version.

- Switch the tablet off. If the tablet is locked, Samsung notes that powering it down may ask for the PIN, password or pattern. If you can’t provide it, Samsung’s guidance is that the tablet will switch off once the battery runs out. Samsung doesn’t describe a single shutdown method that works on every tablet.
- Open recovery mode.
- Tablet with a physical Home button: press and hold Volume Up + Power + Home together.
- Tablet without a Home button: press and hold Volume Up + Power.
- Release the buttons when the recovery menu appears.
- Press Volume Down to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power to select it.
- Highlight Yes with Volume Down and press Power to confirm.
- Follow any remaining prompts to reboot, then go through setup.
If the combination doesn’t open recovery, look up the support page for your exact Galaxy Tab model. The Samsung tablet instructions I’ve drawn on are general and don’t list model-specific alternatives.

Samsung describes FRP as an anti-theft safeguard. After a reset, setup may require the Google account previously registered on the tablet. Samsung Singapore says FRP applies to Android 5.1 and later. On Android 9 and later it may allow verification with the previous screen lock, depending on the device and software. A button reset therefore doesn’t bypass ownership verification, and you shouldn’t expect it to.

If you forgot the Google password
If you know the Google email address but not the password, use Google account recovery. Samsung UK says a new password may take 24 hours or longer to become active, so setup may stay blocked for a while.
If you can’t recall any Google account details
Samsung UK says to contact an authorized Samsung service center and provide proof of purchase. Requirements can vary by country. Samsung’s guidance points to account recovery and authorized support for this problem, not to bypass tools.

Alternative: remote erase with SmartThings Find
If you can’t reach recovery mode or prefer not to use the buttons, Samsung UK documents remote erase through SmartThings Find. It works only if all of these were true before the lockout:
- The tablet is signed in to your Samsung account.
- It is connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
- Remote control and remote unlock were enabled in its settings.
You sign in with your Samsung account and may need to verify your identity. Remote erase isn’t guaranteed for an offline or unprepared tablet. Once the wipe completes, remote control of the device is no longer available.

Which method fits your situation

Don’t confuse this with the Settings reset
Samsung’s Singapore guide notes that a factory reset from within Settings may require your Samsung account password. That is a different method for a tablet you can already unlock. It isn’t part of the recovery-mode steps for a locked one.
