Research home improvement stocks by checking the latest SEC filings, identifying the housing and consumer forces that affect demand, comparing companies’ operating performance and financial resilience, and then valuing each stock with current, dated market data. Lowe’s and The Home Depot are useful U.S. examples, but a company’s presence in a large remodeling market does not establish that its stock is attractively priced. This is a research framework, not a buy-or-sell recommendation.
Which companies count as home improvement stocks?
The label can cover more than big-box retailers. It may include manufacturers, distributors, building-products companies and service providers as well as retailers. Define the companies you intend to compare before you begin: a retailer and a materials manufacturer may face different customers, cost structures and risks.

Lowe’s (NYSE: LOW) and The Home Depot are practical U.S. retail examples, not a complete list of public companies across the home improvement supply chain. The comparison framework below is designed to help you assess candidates on consistent terms rather than assume every business in the sector is interchangeable.

Read the annual report and the latest quarterly update
Start with the company’s latest Form 10-K, then read its most recent Form 10-Q. You can find filings through the SEC’s EDGAR database or use the company’s investor-relations filings page as an index. The SEC’s Form 10-K guide explains that an annual report provides detailed information about a business, its risks and its financial results; the SEC describes Form 10-Q as the quarterly update. EDGAR provides free public access to issuer filings.
#1 Best Overall
- Form 10-K, Item 1 — Business: Identify the products and services, markets, customers, competitors and seasonality the company describes.
- Form 10-K, Item 1A — Risk Factors: Note the material risks the issuer identifies, then consider how they could affect sales, costs or execution.
- Form 10-K, Item 7 — Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A): Read management’s account of results, trends, liquidity and known uncertainties.
- Audited financial statements: Review the income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement alongside the narrative.
- Latest Form 10-Q: Check what changed since the annual report, including quarterly results, financial statements, risk disclosures and MD&A.
Check for material developments between reports
Review Form 8-K filings for material events reported between scheduled annual and quarterly reports. The SEC requires disclosure, but cautions that it does not vouch for the accuracy of each company’s filings. Treat the filing as the issuer’s disclosure and assess the information rather than treating SEC publication as an endorsement.
Investor-relations pages can help you locate earnings releases and presentations. Reconcile company-defined measures and management commentary to the figures in filed statements. For example, as of October 4, 2026, Home Depot’s forms page listed its FY25 Form 10-K and 2Q26 Form 10-Q. That is a pointer to available filings, not a conclusion about the quarter or the stock’s value.

What drives demand for home improvement?
Retailers’ sales depend on households and professionals deciding whether, when and how much to spend on projects. Lowe’s FY2025 Form 10-K identifies home-price appreciation, the age of the housing stock, real disposable personal income, housing turnover, and residential and commercial construction as key demand indicators. Its customer groups include homeowners and renters doing projects themselves or hiring help, along with professional customers such as tradespeople, repair and remodel contractors, and property managers.
Home Depot’s FY2025 filing identifies a broader set of business exposures, including economic conditions, housing and home improvement markets, mortgage and consumer or trade credit, tariffs and trade policy, labor availability, weather and natural disasters, interest rates, and commodity prices. It also describes competition on customer experience, price, quality, assortment, product availability, delivery and pickup. These are disclosed risks and business considerations—not proof that a particular factor will determine future sales or stock performance.

Use housing-market data as context, not as a sales forecast
Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS), in its 2025 Improving America’s Housing report, said U.S. residential remodeling expenditures exceeded $600 billion in 2022. The report described modest declines in 2023 and 2024 and expected expenditures to exceed $600 billion in 2025. The 2025 figure is a forecast in that report, not a confirmed final 2025 result.
JCHS points to aging homes and modernization needs as longer-run support for remodeling activity. It also identifies constraints including lower personal savings, weak household mobility, elevated material and labor costs, and a shortage of skilled tradespeople. Industry spending gives a sense of the market’s scale; it does not show how much revenue a particular retailer will win, whether those sales will be profitable, or what return its stock may deliver.

How do you compare Lowe’s, Home Depot and other candidates?
Build a peer comparison from filings and consistent time periods. The table separates useful comparison questions from the specific disclosures established in the companies’ FY2025 filings; it is not a scorecard or a ranking.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Comparison area | What to examine for each company | Disclosed context for Lowe’s and Home Depot |
|---|---|---|
| Customers and sales mix | DIY, do-it-for-me, professional customers, repair and remodel work, and exposure to larger projects. | Lowe’s describes DIY and do-it-for-me customers as well as Pro customers, including tradespeople, repair and remodelers, and property managers. Home Depot’s cited filing material identifies customer experience and service-related competition; the specific customer-mix figures are not stated here. |
| Demand and geography | Sensitivity to home sales, housing age, construction, local economic conditions, weather and regional exposure. | Lowe’s lists home-price appreciation, housing-stock age, real disposable income, housing turnover, and residential and commercial construction as key demand indicators. Home Depot identifies housing, macroeconomic, weather and natural-disaster exposures in its risk discussion. |
| Competitive position | Assortment, pricing, locations, private brands, delivery, pickup, installation and digital capabilities. | Home Depot describes competition across customer experience, price, quality, assortment, availability, delivery and pickup. Lowe’s describes competition from warehouse retailers, regional lumber yards, specialty and online sellers, rental providers, installers and wholesalers. |

Home Depot says its highest sales volume generally occurs in its second fiscal quarter as spring approaches in its regions. |
| Financial quality | Gross and operating margins, cash from operations, capital expenditures, debt, interest burden and return of capital. | Calculate and compare these from each company’s filed statements for matching periods; the cited disclosures do not establish a comparative result for these measures. |
| Valuation | Current price relative to earnings, free cash flow or another appropriate measure, compared consistently with peers and the company’s own history. | A current price and valuation comparison are not established here; use fresh market data and the latest reported financial figures. |
Keep reported growth and comparable sales in perspective
Reported sales growth may include acquisitions. Comparable-sales measures are intended to focus on a comparable base, but companies can define and adjust them differently. Read each company’s definition and reporting period before comparing the figures. Where the company provides the details, separate changes in price from changes in transactions or volume.
Best Value
Do not treat a stated strategy or management target as evidence that the company has achieved it. Read inventory and cash-flow movements beside sales results: acquisitions or expansion can change working capital, borrowing needs and the number of shares outstanding.

Use current inputs and show your calculation
A strong company can be an unattractive investment if its shares are priced too highly; a low valuation can also reflect genuine operating problems. Before drawing a conclusion, use the latest market price and the most recent reported earnings or cash flow. Record the date and calculation method, use like-for-like periods and compare the same valuation measure across candidates. Consider what could happen under less favorable conditions, such as weaker project demand or higher input costs, rather than relying only on a favorable outlook.
No live LOW or HD share price, current valuation multiple, target price or investor-specific allocation is established here. Those require fresh market data and an assessment of your time horizon and risk tolerance. Lowe’s warns in its FY2025 Form 10-K: “Forward-looking statements speak only as of the date they are made, and we do not undertake any obligation to update these statements other than as required by law.” Check later filings rather than relying on an older forecast.

Consider portfolio context separately from company analysis
The SEC’s investor education material explains that fees and expenses reduce investment returns and that diversification can reduce overall portfolio risk. Those considerations can inform position sizing and portfolio decisions, but they do not establish whether an individual company is financially sound or fairly valued. SEC investor materials are educational, not individualized investment advice.
