Start with the exact job posting, then check the employer’s official engineering and careers pages, and use candidate reports only as leads to verify. This approach helps you judge whether the work fits your skills and goals—and prepare specific questions before applying or interviewing.
Start with the exact opening
Read the live job posting before drawing conclusions about the company. Record the responsibilities, required and preferred qualifications, location, level, and any named team, product, or technical domain. Use those details as your reference point: company-wide descriptions cannot establish what a particular opening involves.

Separate stated requirements from questions the posting leaves open. For example, a list of technologies does not necessarily tell you how much time the role spends on design, implementation, operations, or cross-team work. Mark those unknowns for follow-up rather than treating assumptions as facts.
Find out what the company builds and how engineers contribute
Look for the employer’s official product, engineering, and careers pages. Together, they may explain what the company makes, which users or customers it serves, how engineering teams are organized, and which principles or technologies the employer highlights. Glassdoor’s own engineering page, for example, describes its teams and principles and lists web, iOS, and Android technologies; those details apply to Glassdoor, not to engineering employers generally. #1 Best Overall
Check when a page was published or updated, and compare its claims with the current opening. An employer’s general account of its products or engineering culture is useful context, but it does not prove that a specific team uses the same tools or follows the same practices.
Research the team, projects, and measures of success
Texas Instruments advises candidates to learn about current projects and long-term vision, and to ask about technology, team culture, and how success is measured. Use that guidance to identify what the posting does not answer. Texas Instruments candidate guidance
- Which current project or product area would this role support?
- How does the team divide design, building, testing, and operational responsibilities?
- Which disciplines or teams does the role work with regularly?
- What outcomes would indicate strong performance in the first few months?
These are prompts for a conversation, not facts to assume about the employer. Ask the recruiter or hiring team to describe the role’s actual priorities.

Look for an official interview guide or careers page that describes the assessment. Atlassian says its engineering assessments emphasize broad distributed engineering skills, problem solving, and learning agility rather than proficiency in one programming language. That is Atlassian’s stated approach; it is not a general rule for engineering interviews. Atlassian interview guide
Use any published guidance to focus your preparation, then ask the recruiter to confirm the stages and format for the specific opening. A public guide may not capture every role, location, or current process.
Use candidate reports as clues, not guarantees
Interview sites can surface reported questions and candidate experiences, but each entry reflects one person’s role, date, location, and hiring process. Candidate interview reports
Rank #4
- Give more weight to recent reports that match the role and location you are considering.
- Look for recurring themes across multiple accounts rather than treating one post as a prediction.
- Confirm any report that would change your preparation with the recruiter.
A 2015 Glassdoor analysis of candidate-submitted interview data reported an average of 21 days for a typical software engineer interview process. This historical figure is not a current forecast or a reliable timeline for a particular employer. Glassdoor’s 2015 interview-duration report
Compare openings on the same terms
When weighing more than one opportunity, compare the specific role and the conditions attached to it rather than relying on company reputation alone.
Best Value
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Work and level | Responsibilities, scope, seniority, and stated qualifications in each live posting. |
| Technical domain | Products, users, engineering area, and technologies tied to the role; verify details with the employer. |
| Team and collaboration | Team context, current priorities, and how engineering works with other disciplines. |
| Location and work arrangement | The specific posting and recruiter confirmation; terms can differ by opening. |
| Compensation and benefits | The specific posting or recruiter conversation; the cited career guidance does not establish universal terms. |
| Hiring process and success measures | Interview stages and format, plus how the employer defines good performance in the role. |
Turn your research into focused questions
Bring a short list of questions that addresses genuine unknowns instead of asking for information already stated in the posting. Texas Instruments’ candidate guidance includes asking about technology, team culture, role success measures, and the team’s recent work. Texas Instruments candidate guidance
- “What’s the most exciting project your team has worked on recently, and what impact did it have?”
- “How is success measured in this role?”
- What are the team’s current priorities, and how might this opening contribute?
- What are the interview stages, and what should I expect in each?
- How does the team collaborate across engineering and other disciplines?
Use the answers to decide whether the work, environment, and expectations fit what you want—not simply whether the company’s public description sounds appealing.
Recheck details before applying
Engineering teams, technologies, products, role requirements, hiring stages, and candidate accounts can change. Revisit the live posting and the employer’s official pages before applying, and date candidate reports when you use them to inform your expectations.
