How can I check if a job offer is real without giving them my Social Security number?

A legitimate employer may need tax or payroll forms later, but verify the employer and use its genuine hiring process first. - Pause and preserve the message. Save the offer or message so you can compare the exact company name, job title, email domain, phone number, and wording. Do not click links or call numbers in a message you suspect may be fraudulent.
- Find the opening yourself. Navigate to the employer’s official website and search its careers page for the role. For a purported government job, locate the relevant government hiring site independently.
- Confirm the recruiter out of band. Use the company switchboard, HR contact, or other contact detail published on the official site. Ask whether the position is open and whether the named recruiter represents the company. The FTC advises contacting the company through details you know are legitimate, not details supplied by the person who contacted you (FTC, “Taking the ‘ploy’ out of employment scams,” January 2023).
- Compare public details. Search the company and recruiter names, email domain, phone number, and distinctive wording from the message alongside terms such as “scam,” “complaint,” “review,” or “fraud.” Compare the job title and description with the official listing. Treat reports as warning evidence, not proof; finding no complaints does not establish that an offer is genuine.
- Keep sensitive information private while checking. Do not send identity documents, government identifiers, banking details, or payment information to an unverified person or form. If an employer requests information as part of onboarding, first confirm the employer and complete the process through its genuine hiring channel.
- Stop if the offer involves upfront money or a check scheme. Do not pay application, training, equipment, or onboarding costs to get the job. Do not deposit a check and forward part of the money, buy gift cards, or return an alleged overpayment.
Which evidence is useful—and what does not prove an offer is real?
The strongest practical confirmation is direct: the role appears on the employer’s official careers page, and the employer confirms through independently sourced contact details that the role is open and the recruiter is authorized. What warning signs should make me stop and verify?
The FTC says there is no sure-fire way to detect every job scam. A single signal can sometimes have a benign explanation, but unusual requests or several warning signs together are reason to stop sharing information and confirm the role independently.
- The recruiter uses a personal email address instead of an employer domain, or a domain that slightly misspells or imitates a known company.
- The interview happens only by text or chat, especially when contact quickly turns into an offer.
- The recruiter asks for a Social Security number, driver’s license, bank account, or other personal details before you have verified the job and hiring contact.
- The pay or flexibility seems unusually attractive for the work, or the recruiter pressures you to act immediately.
- You must pay upfront for the job, training, or equipment, or buy equipment from a supplier the recruiter designates.
- You are sent a check with directions to forward some of the funds, pay someone else, or buy gift cards.
A check may appear available in your account before the bank discovers it is fake. Do not treat a cleared or temporarily available balance as proof that the check is valid.

How do I verify a recruiter without using the phone number they gave me?
Go to the company’s official website by navigating there yourself. Find its published switchboard, HR contact, or other contact channel, then ask whether the opening exists and whether that recruiter is authorized. What if I already shared information or sent money?
If you suspect a fake offer, report it to the FTC and to the platform where the listing appeared. U.S. readers who shared sensitive information can use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps. If you sent money, contact the payment provider promptly and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed; the FTC explains payment-specific options in What To Do if You Were Scammed.
The FTC’s remote-job guidance (November 13, 2023) also recommends researching an employer before applying and checking the real site or contacting the company independently.
