Request the refund from the store or seller that processed the MMO charge—not automatically from the game publisher. Find the transaction in that account’s purchase history, identify whether it was game access, DLC, virtual currency or a subscription, and check the rules for your country before submitting. Refund eligibility depends on the seller and what happened after purchase; no single MMO refund rule applies everywhere.
1. Identify who processed the purchase
Check the receipt, order confirmation or bank statement for the merchant and platform. Submit the request through that seller’s support system. If you bought through a console or app store, the publisher may not control the transaction. Minecraft Support, for example, directs customers to the store where they bought the game because each store has its own policy: Minecraft’s refund guidance.

2. Find the transaction and choose the right refund route
Sign in to the account used for the purchase and open its order history, purchases or transaction history. Match the charge by date, item and amount, then use the platform’s refund workflow.
- Steam: Sign in to Steam Help, open Purchases, select the transaction and the relevant problem, choose “I’d like to request a refund,” and submit the form. See Steam’s refund instructions.
- PlayStation Store: Open Transaction History, select an eligible transaction and choose Request Refund. Follow PlayStation’s refund instructions.
3. Identify what the charge covered
MMO purchases can fall into different categories, and a policy for one category may not apply to another.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
- Base game or game access: The store may consider time since purchase and playtime, or whether the game was downloaded or streamed.
- Expansion or DLC: Add-on rules can differ from rules for the base game, including restrictions after download or use.
- Virtual currency or an in-game item: Whether the item was delivered, consumed, modified or transferred may matter.
- Subscription: Check the terms for the recurring service and whether the charge was an initial payment or a renewal. Use may affect the amount refunded.
4. Check the timing and use conditions for your seller
These examples illustrate why you should not treat a time limit from one storefront as a universal MMO rule. The PlayStation links below describe US policies; Nintendo’s example is also for the US. Check your own country’s terms and the conditions attached to the exact transaction.
| Seller and purchase type | Stated conditions |
|---|---|
| Steam game purchase | Valve says it will issue a refund for a game requested within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours played. It also says you may submit a request outside those conditions for review. Steam instructions. |
| Steam in-game purchase | For Valve-developed games, the stated window is 48 hours, and the item must not have been consumed, modified or transferred. Third-party developers can opt in, and Steam says it will indicate eligibility at purchase. Under the stated policy, other in-game purchases in non-Valve games are not refundable through Steam. Steam Refunds policy. |
| PlayStation Store game or DLC (US) | The support page lists a 14-day request window and says the game or DLC must not have been downloaded or streamed, unless faulty. The US cancellation policy also says downloaded or streamed games and add-ons are not eligible unless faulty. Support page; US cancellation policy. |
| PlayStation Store consumable or subscription (US) | Separate criteria apply. The support page’s consumables checklist includes requesting within 14 days, buying from PlayStation Store and not launching the game after purchase. Subscription terms have their own timing and initial-payment conditions; use may reduce a subscription refund. Check the exact category in the support instructions and US cancellation policy. |
| Nintendo Account digital purchase (US) | Nintendo says account-service payments, including pre-purchases and subscription payments, are final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. This is the US policy, not a rule for every territory or seller. Nintendo’s US policy. |
5. Submit a clear, accurate request
Use the seller’s form or support channel and give enough detail to identify the charge. State the actual reason; no particular explanation guarantees a refund.

- Name of the game, add-on, currency, item or subscription
- Purchase date and, if relevant, when the item was delivered or used
- A concise, truthful reason, such as a duplicate or accidental purchase, an access problem or a charge you do not recognize
Keep the receipt and note relevant dates. For game purchases, record playtime and whether you downloaded or launched the game. For virtual items, note whether they were consumed, modified or transferred. This gives support a factual account to assess against its policy.

If the problem is a technical fault, contact the publisher’s support team for troubleshooting as well as asking the seller about a refund. If you do not recognize the charge or believe it was unauthorized, report it through the platform’s or payment provider’s fraud process rather than describing it as an ordinary change of mind. Steam distinguishes its refund requests from bank-initiated chargebacks; see Steam’s guidance on payment disputes and chargebacks.
