To report a message in a Discord server, select it, choose Report Message, then pick the policy category that best matches what happened. You can also tell the server’s moderators, who may be able to act within that community. Reporting to Discord and contacting moderators are separate routes; neither guarantees a particular outcome.
How do I report someone in a Discord server?
For a specific message, use Discord’s in-app report flow. On desktop, right-click the message; on mobile, press and hold it. Then choose Report Message and select the closest policy violation. Discord presents a more specific category on the following screen. If the initial choice does not fit, you can go back and change it.

Report the specific message using Report Message, selecting the category that most closely fits the scam or other policy violation. Discord’s Community Guidelines prohibit phishing, financial scams, unsolicited bulk messages (spam), and harassment. They also prohibit threats and sharing someone’s personal information without consent.

Do not guess at someone’s motive or choose a more serious category just to attract attention. Discord prohibits misleading, false, or malicious reports, duplicate reports about the same issue, and coordinating a group to report the same content. A concise, accurate account of what the message says or does is more useful than speculation.
Should I tell the server mods too?
Yes, if you want a local response. Discord recommends contacting the server’s moderators about an incident; they may be able to respond immediately within the server. A report submitted to Discord alerts the platform to a suspected policy violation, while a moderator handles the community-level issue. One route does not replace the other.

How do I report content in someone’s profile?
Use profile reporting for problematic content represented in a user’s profile, rather than trying to report the profile through a message-report flow. Open the profile’s three-dot menu, choose Report User Profile, select the profile elements you want to report (you can select more than one), and identify the policy violation. For a specific message, report that message instead.
Do I need a message link to report it?
Not for the ordinary in-app message-report flow described above. Discord documents a separate process for reports under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA): EU users complete verification and provide report details, and a message URL is required for a DSA message report.

To copy a message link for a DSA report, right-click the message or use its ellipsis menu on desktop and select Copy Message Link. On mobile, press and hold the message, then choose Copy Message Link. This requirement applies to the DSA process; Discord’s instructions do not say every ordinary in-app report worldwide requires a copied link.
What happens after a report?
Discord reviews reports, but its guidance does not promise a particular enforcement action or a fixed response time for ordinary reports. For DSA reports, Discord says it confirms receipt by system direct message or email and uses automated and human review. Its stated targets are review within 24–48 hours for high-harm reports, such as child safety, extremism, or imminent harm, and within a week for lower-harm examples, including harassment, hate speech, or cybercrime misinformation. Complex investigations may take days to weeks. Discord cautions that these DSA timelines can fluctuate with report volume, technical issues, process changes, and backlogs; they are targets, not guarantees.

How can I limit further contact?
Ignore or block the person
Discord’s Ignore feature hides a user’s messages and notifications in direct messages, group chats, and servers, while still letting you reveal hidden messages. Discord says an ignored user cannot visually detect that they have been ignored. You can also choose Block if you want to limit interaction more fully. These controls are separate from reporting, and Ignore is available after submitting a report.
Adjust the DM spam filter
To change the spam filter, go to User Settings > Content & Social. Discord’s Safer Messaging guidance lists three choices: filter messages from non-friends (the stated default), filter all direct messages, or do not filter direct messages. Suspected spam can be sent to a separate spam inbox. This setting helps manage incoming DMs; it does not replace reporting a policy-violating message.
Server owners: use the explicit-image filter for its intended purpose
Server owners can find the explicit-image filter under Server Settings > Moderation > Safety Setup. It can block messages that may contain explicit images in channels not marked age-restricted, with coverage set for all members or only members without assigned roles. It is an explicit-image control, not a general spam or scam filter.
What if someone is in immediate danger?
For a credible threat of violence or an immediate risk of self-harm, Discord directs people to contact local law enforcement. In the United States, Discord’s Safety Center also lists Crisis Text Line: text DISCORD to 741741. For other regions, it points to ThroughLine Care to find free, confidential chat, text, or phone support in your country. Use urgent real-world support when there is immediate danger rather than relying only on a platform report.
