To report misinformation, open the specific post, comment, video, or account on the platform where it appears, choose its report option, and select the closest relevant policy category. Follow the prompts and give the requested context. A report asks the platform to review content under its own rules; it does not guarantee removal or an account suspension.
Before you report a post
Report the content to the platform hosting it. The World Health Organization gives this general advice in a page about misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic: if you see content you believe is false or misleading, you can report it to the hosting social media platform. The page is useful for that principle, not as a current directory of every platform’s rules: WHO: How to report misinformation online.

- Start with the specific item you believe violates a rule, rather than reporting an account solely because you disagree with its views.
- Choose the closest available category and answer the platform’s follow-up questions. X says its reporting flow gathers information about the issue.
- Keep in mind that platforms assess reports against their own policies. A claim being wrong or disputed does not, by itself, establish that it violates a platform rule.
How to report misinformation on X
- Go to the post you want to report and open its menu.
- Select Report post, then follow the prompts and provide the requested information.
X asks users to report content they believe violates its Rules or Terms of Service. Reporting a post or List does not automatically suspend the account. X says it acknowledges properly submitted reports within 24 hours, but resolution times vary and may take longer. These are X’s published descriptions, and interface details may differ between app and web versions. See X’s instructions for reporting a post and X’s report-violation information.

Use the report option on the specific content and follow the prompts to submit it for review. Facebook says it hides or removes reported content when it finds a Community Standards violation. You can check its decision in Support Inbox. If Facebook leaves the content up, it usually offers another review, although that option is not available for every content type. Facebook says this second review is usually completed within 24 hours. Those are Facebook’s stated processes; availability and timing may vary. See Facebook Help Centre: report something on Facebook.

How to report misinformation on TikTok
TikTok lets users report a video, comment, or account they believe violates its Community Guidelines. Open the relevant item or profile, choose the report option, and follow the in-app prompts. TikTok says it evaluates reports using automated and human review, and does not disclose the reporting user’s identity to the person reported. That privacy statement is specific to TikTok and should not be assumed to apply on other platforms. Its reporting page was updated September 10, 2024; menus can change. See TikTok’s reporting guidance.
TikTok’s harmful-misinformation guide covers intentional disinformation as well as harmful misinformation that may not have been shared with intent to deceive. The distinction matters: you do not need to prove a poster intended to deceive before using the report process. TikTok assesses content under its policies. See TikTok Community Guidelines on integrity and authenticity.

What happens after you submit a report?
The platform reviews the item against its rules and decides what action, if any, to take. Outcomes can include leaving the content up or taking action when the platform finds a violation. Reporting is a request for policy review, not a guarantee that the post will be removed or the account suspended.
- Check for a decision: Facebook directs reporters to Support Inbox.
- Look for a review option: Facebook usually offers another review when it leaves content up, but not for every content type.
- Allow for varying response times: X says it acknowledges properly submitted reports within 24 hours; that is not a promise that it will resolve every report within that period.
Instagram and YouTube reporting
Reporting resources for Instagram and YouTube are linked from the WHO page, but the sources cited here do not establish their current, exact reporting steps or categories. Use the reporting controls and current official help information within the relevant platform rather than assuming its menu matches Facebook, X, or TikTok.
