Don’t click, reply, open attachments, or share personal or payment details until you verify the message. Report it through the official route for your country and the channel it arrived on. If you clicked a link, shared information, or lost money, contact the real benefits agency promptly as well: sending a report alone does not secure an account or recover funds.
What to do before reporting the message
- Stop interacting with it. Avoid links, attachments, replies, and requests for passwords, identity details, or payment.
- Verify the claim independently. Visit the benefits agency’s official website or account by entering its address yourself or using trusted paperwork. Do not rely on a phone number, email address, or link in the message. Caller ID can also be faked.
- Keep the message if needed for a report. Follow the receiving agency’s instructions: for example, Services Australia asks for the entire scam email or a screenshot of a text that includes the suspicious link.
- Choose the route that matches what happened. Reporting a suspicious message is different from reporting a loss, a compromised account, or suspected benefit fraud by another person.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre puts the verification principle plainly: “If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly.” Its guidance says to find the organisation’s details on its official website or existing paperwork, not in the suspicious message. Read the NCSC guidance.

Official reporting routes by country
These are country-specific examples, not a universal reporting address. If you live elsewhere, start from your government’s official website or the benefits agency being impersonated. Use contact details found independently and check that they are current.
| Country or region | Where to report | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Forward suspicious emails to [email protected]; forward suspicious texts to 7726, a free service that reports them to your mobile provider. | For online scams or fraud involving money lost or hacking, England and Wales residents are directed to Report Fraud; people in Scotland are directed to Police Scotland. These are not the same as reporting a suspicious email or text. |
| Australia | For scams impersonating Services Australia or myGov—including Centrelink, Medicare, and Child Support—forward the entire scam email or send a screenshot of a scam text showing the suspicious link to [email protected]. | If you opened a suspicious link, shared myGov sign-in details or other personal information, or are concerned about your records, contact the Services Australia Scams and Identity Theft Helpdesk immediately. Confirm current contact details on the agency’s official website. |
| Canada | Report a scam related to a department’s services to that department. Report scams or fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, even if you were not a victim. Suspicious texts can also be reported by forwarding them to 7726. | Use official government websites for benefit information rather than links in a suspicious message. |
| United States | Use USAGov’s scam reporting tool, which asks where the scam happened and what category it belongs to, or contact the impersonated benefit program through its official website. | No particular U.S. benefit program is specified here, so the right agency depends on the program being impersonated. Do not guess an agency based only on a message’s wording. |
If you clicked, shared information, or lost money
Contact the affected benefits agency through an independently verified security or identity-theft channel. Tell it what you clicked or shared and when. If you entered a password, use the agency’s official account recovery or security instructions; do not use a reset link from the suspicious message. If you lost money or your device or account may be compromised, report that through the appropriate fraud or incident route for your location as well as reporting the message.

- REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
- 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
- BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
- SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
- IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.
Services Australia specifically tells people who opened a suspicious link, shared personal information, or have concerns about their records to contact its Scams and Identity Theft Helpdesk immediately. In the UK, the route for a loss or hacking depends on whether you are in England and Wales or Scotland, as shown above. Other agencies may give different instructions; follow the official guidance for the program and country involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse a scam report with a benefit-fraud report
If someone is impersonating a benefits agency to target you, report the suspicious communication and any harm to you. If instead you want to report another person for suspected fraud against benefits, use the relevant government’s separate benefit-fraud process. In the UK, GOV.UK’s benefit-fraud service is for suspected fraud against benefits; the Department for Work and Pensions reviews reports, an investigation may take time, and it does not provide the outcome to the reporter.
