What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If a download page is sending fake virus alerts, close it without clicking its buttons, report the page through the right browser or Google channel, then revoke that site’s notification permission in the browser that allowed it. A browser notification alone does not prove that malware was installed. If you downloaded or ran a file, handle that separately.
Why am I getting fake virus alerts from my browser?
A website can ask permission to send notifications through your browser. If you allowed it, those messages may appear even after you close the tab or browser. Microsoft distinguishes browser notifications from pop-up windows; either can be abused to make a fake warning look urgent. The alert itself does not establish that your device is infected.

Do not call a phone number in the warning or install a scanner offered by the page. Microsoft Support says: “Error and warning messages from Microsoft never include a phone number.”

What to do first
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not click its warning, call a number, download a suggested tool, or enter passwords or payment details.
- Note the page address without reopening it. If convenient, copy the URL from the existing tab or browser history. Do not put passwords, payment information, or other personal details into a report. Google warns that information submitted in its spam report may be sent to the site owner, and that personally identifying information may cause a submission to be discarded; this warning applies to that report, not necessarily to every Google form.
- Report the page using the matching route below. Reporting does not guarantee an immediate takedown and does not revoke notification permission.
- Block or remove the site’s notification permission using the instructions for the browser that displayed the alert.
- Assess any downloaded or run file separately. Use the relevant steps below if that applies.
Where to report the page
Choose the route that fits what the page is doing. A page distributing malware is different from one impersonating a service to steal information.
#1 Best Overall
| Situation or browser | Reporting route |
|---|---|
| Page suspected of distributing malware | Use the malware report form linked by Google Search Central’s malware guidance. |
| Page impersonating a service to steal personal information | Use the phishing form linked by Google Search Central’s guidance. |
| Firefox, while the deceptive page is open | Choose Help > Report deceptive site. |
| Microsoft Edge | Choose Settings and more > Help and feedback > Report unsafe website. |
How to stop notifications from a download site
Use the browser that showed the notification. These paths refer to desktop Chrome, Edge, and Firefox; wording or menu placement may vary with version, mobile platform, or work and school device policies.
Google Chrome desktop
- Open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications.
- Under Allowed to send notifications, find the suspicious site.
- Change its permission to Block, or add it under Not allowed to send notifications.
Chrome may automatically block notifications it judges intrusive or misleading, but check the site-specific permission if alerts continue.
Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites.
- Select the site, find Notifications, and choose Block.
Alternatively, open View site information to the left of the address bar and set Notifications to Block.

Mozilla Firefox desktop
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Notifications > Settings.
- Select the site. Choose Block to stop future requests, or Remove Website to revoke the permission while allowing the site to ask again later.
- To clear every listed site, choose Remove All Websites. To prevent future permission prompts, enable Block new requests asking to allow notifications.
Firefox describes Web Push as opt-in. Blocking new requests is separate from removing an existing permission.

If the file downloaded but you did not open it
Do not run it or bypass a browser warning unless you have independently verified both the source and the file. In Firefox, an unsafe download in the Downloads panel can be opened for details and removed with Remove file. The cited Firefox guidance describes that control; steps in other browsers may differ.
If you ran the file or suspect the device was compromised
For Windows, Microsoft recommends running a full scan with Windows Security and applying security updates. A scan is a useful response, not proof that a device is clean. If you may have exposed account credentials, change the affected passwords. If you gave a scammer access to your device or payment information, Microsoft advises considering a device reset in serious cases and contacting your card provider about charges.
