To replace line on an electric trimmer, disconnect its power, open the head as the manual directs, and either reload the spool with the specified nylon line or install a compatible prewound spool. The correct diameter, shape, loading direction, and spool can vary by model, so check the trimmer’s model number and manual before buying line or opening the head.
Before you start: check the model and line specification
Find the model number on the trimmer label, then check its operator manual for the line diameter and shape, spool capacity, head-opening method, winding direction, and required exposed line length. The examples below show why one size or procedure should not be assumed for every electric trimmer.

These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable recommendations. When choosing supplies, verify the exact trimmer and head compatibility, line diameter, material and shape, and whether you need bulk line or a prewound spool. A correctly sized line is not necessarily compatible with every spool or head.
How to replace the line
- Disconnect power. Unplug a corded trimmer. Remove the battery from a cordless model before opening the head or handling its spool.
- Open the head according to the manual. Find the specified release tabs, retainer, or other release method. Do not pry at an unfamiliar head; designs differ.
- Remove the spool and choose a replacement method. Clear old line and debris if you are reloading. Alternatively, fit a prewound spool only if its part number is compatible with your exact model.
- Use the specified nylon line. Match the manual’s diameter and shape. Do not substitute wire, rope, metal-reinforced line, or blades.
- Wind or thread as the head requires. Follow the head’s arrows, marks, eyelets, and manual. For the EGO ST1500F/ST1500SF specifically, the manual calls for aligning the LOAD marks and eyelets, threading 16 ft of line until both sides are equal, and winding until about 5.5 in remain at each end. Do not apply those measurements to another model.
- Reinstall and check the head. Route both ends through their intended outlets, seat the spool, and secure the cover or retainer. Before restoring power, check that the assembly is secure and that the line can move as the manual describes. On the EGO ST1500F/ST1500SF, the manual recommends pulling the lines by hand to check assembly.
Choose the right replacement line or spool
Bulk nylon line lets you reload a compatible spool; a prewound spool can avoid winding by hand. Either way, buy for the exact trimmer model and head. For example, the BLACK+DECKER GH900 manual names the AF-100 spool, but that does not establish compatibility with other trimmers. Check the manual or manufacturer’s parts information before ordering.

Line that is too large or otherwise unsuitable can cause problems. EGO warns in its ST1500F/ST1500SF manual that using unspecified line may overheat or damage the trimmer. The manuals also warn against materials such as wire, rope, and metal-reinforced line because they can break off as dangerous projectiles.

Stop the trimmer and disconnect power before reopening the head. Check for tangled line, debris, incorrect routing, or a spool that is not seated properly. Remove remaining line and reload it according to the manual. EGO’s ST1500F/ST1500SF manual specifically directs users to remove remaining line and reload when line sticks or fails to release.

Do not alter the blade that trims line to length. EGO warns that excess line can overheat the motor and create a personal-injury risk. If the head still will not feed line after correct reloading, consult the model’s manual or manufacturer support rather than forcing the spool.
