To replace a Samsung refrigerator water filter, first identify the exact cartridge your refrigerator takes, then follow the removal and locking procedure for that filter type. Flush the new filter before use and reset the reminder using your model’s controls. Samsung recommends changing the filter every six months, but the fit and reset steps vary by refrigerator.
Find the right replacement filter first
Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same cartridge. Check the refrigerator’s model number and Samsung’s compatibility information, consult the manual, or read the code printed on the installed filter. Samsung’s US guide names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1; those codes are not interchangeable unless Samsung confirms compatibility with your model. Filter location also varies, so use the manual if you cannot find the cartridge.

Prepare the refrigerator
- Confirm that the replacement code is compatible with your refrigerator model.
- For the procedure covered by Samsung Canada, shut off the water supply and dispense water until flow stops to relieve pressure. Put a towel beneath the filter area to catch drips.
- Open the filter cover. If the filter is somewhere other than the expected compartment, consult the refrigerator manual rather than forcing access.
Remove and install the filter
For HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN twist-lock cartridges, turn the old filter counterclockwise until it unlocks, then pull it out. Remove the protective cap from the new cartridge, insert the cartridge straight into the housing, and turn it clockwise until it locks. Check the lock mark or notch against the housing indicator.

HAFCU1 has its own alignment and twist procedure. Do not assume that the same motion or alignment applies to every cartridge: follow the instructions for the filter type and refrigerator model. Samsung warns that an incompatible filter can damage the housing. If a filter will not seat or lock, stop and recheck its code and the model-specific instructions; do not force it. Flush the new filter and reset the reminder
Restore the water supply and inspect the filter area for leaks. Dispense and discard water to clear trapped air and carbon particles before drinking it. Samsung’s instructions call for several gallons; its Canada guidance describes about seven minutes, or 10–12 large glasses, for the procedure on that page. These are flushing directions, not a guarantee that every model has identical controls or flow.

After replacement, reset the filter reminder. The button combination or touchscreen path depends on the control panel and model; some procedures use a labeled button held for three seconds, while others use a screen menu. Use the refrigerator manual’s exact instructions. Samsung describes the reminder as timer-based, so resetting it records the replacement rather than testing water quality.
When to replace the filter
Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every six months. Usage and local water quality can affect filter life, and the reminder is a prompt rather than a measurement of the water. If flow slows or taste or odor changes before the reminder, check the filter and follow the model-specific troubleshooting guidance.

Troubleshoot leaks, slow flow, or an unlocked filter
The filter leaks after replacement
- Check that the cartridge is the exact compatible type and is fully seated and locked.
- Remove and reinstall it according to its model-specific alignment and locking procedure; inspect the fit and seal without forcing the cartridge.
- If it continues to leak, stop using the dispenser and follow Samsung’s model-specific support guidance. An incompatible cartridge can damage the housing.
Water flows slowly or tastes unusual
Confirm that the water supply is on and the filter is correctly installed. Flush additional water if air or carbon particles remain after replacement. Persistent slow flow or an unusual taste or smell calls for checking compatibility and the refrigerator’s troubleshooting instructions rather than assuming that a reset will fix it.
The filter will not lock
Recheck the cartridge code against the refrigerator model and align it with the housing indicator before turning. Samsung documents a locking-rib design change for HAF-CU1, so a cartridge that appears similar may still not fit correctly. Do not force it; use Samsung’s fit guidance and the manual for the specific refrigerator.
