You can replace the video in a 24/7 YouTube stream without ending the live event: keep OBS connected to the same YouTube event and switch the program output to a different media source or scene. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
What changes when you replace the video
YouTube receives the outgoing feed from your encoder, such as OBS. The video source is changed inside the encoder; the existing stream stays live as long as OBS continues sending content to the same YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end a stream by stopping content transmission from the encoder or ending it in Live Control Room. Replacing a source is a separate operation. The steps below are for OBS Studio. Other encoders may use different controls, and a source change is not guaranteed to be seamless with every file or setup. Test the exact workflow before using it on your public stream.

Prepare the replacement in OBS
- Add the clip before going live with the change. In OBS, add a Media Source to the current scene or create a separate scene for the replacement. For a multi-video playlist, OBS also offers a VLC Video source; VLC must be installed for that source type to be available. See the OBS Media Sources guide for supported file types and playback options.
- Check framing and sound. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended, and check its audio level and whether it has an audio track. Choose whether the clip should loop, restart when its scene becomes active, or continue when hidden. If a source closes its file while inactive, OBS notes that it may take a short time to reload when shown.
- Set playlist behavior if using VLC Video. Confirm the file order and choose the intended loop or shuffle behavior. Test playback before relying on it during a live broadcast; a playlist is useful for sequential playback, while separate scenes are easier to inspect before a manual change.
Switch the live output without ending the stream
- Open Studio Mode in OBS if you want to preview the replacement. It separates the edit/preview area from the live program output; viewers cannot see Studio Mode itself. OBS Studio Mode guide
- Load the replacement scene in Preview. Check that the correct clip is playing, the image is framed properly, and the sound is as expected. If replacing a source in the current scene instead, use the media controls to restart or advance it as needed.
- Apply the change. Use the selected transition, such as a cut or fade, to put the replacement on the live output. Without Studio Mode, you can switch scenes directly, but previewing first gives you a chance to catch a wrong scene or playback issue.
- Leave the connection alone. Keep OBS streaming to the same YouTube event. Do not press Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in Live Control Room during the replacement. The stream key is the credential OBS uses to send the feed; treat it like a password and do not publish it. A source change does not require sharing or resetting the key. YouTube stream key guidance
- Monitor the result. Check YouTube’s preview and the live watch page, and listen for continuous audio. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality. Test with the same computer, files, and OBS configuration you plan to use; official feature documentation does not guarantee that every replacement will avoid a brief black frame, audio gap, or dropped frames. Choose between separate scenes and a playlist

Neither setup is universally best for a 24/7 nature stream. Choose based on whether you need a preview before each change, want playback to advance automatically, and prefer a cut or another transition. OBS documents media source and Studio Mode behavior in its Media Sources and Studio Mode guides.

Keep a separate recording if the archive matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 stream therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube archive. If preserving the full feed matters, make a local recording and check that you have enough storage and recording capacity. YouTube live stream archiving guidance
Troubleshoot a bad or interrupted replacement
- Viewers still see the old clip: Check whether the replacement is only in Preview. In Studio Mode, apply the transition to move it to the live output.
- The picture goes black briefly: A media source may need to reload, particularly if it closes its file while inactive. Test the source’s inactive behavior and consider keeping the clip ready in a separate scene.
- The video appears cropped or too small: Review the source’s fit and dimensions in the scene before transitioning. Check the preview against the expected canvas framing.
- There is no sound or the levels change: Inspect the source’s audio track and OBS audio levels, then listen to the YouTube preview and watch page. Do not assume a successful picture change means audio is also correct.
- The stream itself stops: Confirm OBS is still sending to the same YouTube event and has not been stopped, and verify the connection in YouTube Live Control Room. A scene change should not require ending the event; if the encoder disconnects, follow YouTube’s live control room status and recovery guidance.
- The YouTube archive is incomplete or missing: For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube does not guarantee capture. Use a local recording when a complete copy is important.
