To replace wording in a template, first determine whether the words are an editable text layer or part of a flattened image. Select the text box or layer, replace the copy, then check line breaks, styling, and (for video) the layer’s timing. If the editor selects only one picture rather than individual letters, obtain an editable source or retouch the artwork and add new text; there is no universal one-click replacement for flattened images.
1. Check what kind of template you have
Before changing anything, click the wording on the canvas or in the layer stack.
- Editable text object: the editor shows text controls such as font, size, color, or opacity. You can replace the words directly.
- Replaceable text placeholder: the template exposes a dedicated Replace or Quick replace control. Use that control so the template’s intended styling remains attached to the asset.
- Replaceable image or video: the control changes the media, not necessarily any lettering baked into it.
- Flattened image: selecting the artwork highlights one picture and provides no text-layer controls. You need an editable source, or image retouching followed by a new text layer.
Do not assume that replacing a photo or video placeholder also makes lettering editable. Those are separate asset types.
2. Replace text in Adobe Express on the web
Adobe Express documents both direct text editing and a Quick replace panel. In the web editor, Quick replace is available from Edit page; Adobe’s help page was updated November 20, 2025.

- Open the template in Adobe Express.
- Select Edit page, then choose Quick replace.
- Find the target text asset in the list and select Replace.
- Enter the new wording and apply it.
- Preview the whole design. Check that the replacement did not create unwanted wrapping, clipping, or overlap.
If the item is not listed in Quick replace, select the text directly on the canvas or in the layer stack. Adobe’s video-template tutorial instructs you to select the text box and double-click it to type. After entering the replacement, use the properties panel to adjust font, size, color, opacity, outline, shape, shadow, or animation as needed.
Quick replace exposes only assets that the template marks as available for replacement. A missing item is therefore a signal to try direct layer selection, not proof that the design has no editable text.
3. Replace text in an Adobe Express video template
The text-editing action is similar, but video adds a time dimension.

- Open the video template and select the text box in the canvas or layer stack.
- Double-click the text and enter the replacement copy.
- Use the text properties to preserve or refine the original font, color, opacity, outline, shadow, and animation.
- Move the playhead through every scene in which the wording should appear.
- Inspect the timeline and layer timing. Confirm the text starts at the intended time, remains visible long enough to read, and disappears with the correct scene.
- Preview the video from before the text appears until after it leaves the frame. Repeat for each changed layer.
Adobe’s video-editing guide describes changing a layer’s start time and duration. A replacement that looks correct on one frame can still be mistimed elsewhere, particularly when the original placeholder was short and the new copy takes longer to read.
4. Keep the replacement looking like the template
Fit and line breaks
Measure the replacement against the original text box rather than assuming automatic resizing. A longer name or headline may wrap to a second line, collide with nearby artwork, or be clipped at the box edge. Try shorter wording first; if the copy cannot change, widen the box, reduce the size, or adjust tracking while preserving the design’s hierarchy.
Formatting
Check font family, weight, capitalization, color, opacity, alignment, outline, shadow, and any shape behind the text. If the template uses animated text, verify that the replacement inherited the animation and that the effect remains legible against the footage.

Contrast and safe areas
Preview on the actual background, not only on the editor’s neutral canvas. A replacement can land over a bright face, logo, or moving detail. Move the text or strengthen its documented outline or shadow controls without covering essential content.
Multiple instances
Templates often repeat a title in an opening, lower third, and closing card. Replace each intended instance and search the layer stack for leftover placeholder wording before export.

When a template contains a replaceable photo or video, select that media layer and use Replace to upload or choose new media. Adobe describes replacement workflows in its video-template tutorial and notes that effects applied to the replaced media can be retained. This action does not establish that any words embedded in the media are editable, so return to the text-layer check after changing the footage.

6. Adobe Express on mobile
Adobe’s mobile help page, updated February 24, 2026, describes opening Quick replace, selecting an element, choosing a new element, and selecting text to type an update. The exact arrangement of controls can differ from the web editor, but the diagnostic remains the same: choose a listed replaceable asset when available; otherwise select the text layer itself and edit it. Preview the complete design after changing the copy.
7. CapCut template considerations
CapCut’s official help concerns replaceable material clips—image or video placeholders that a template author marks for replacement. The page states that creating those replaceable clips is supported on Mobile and Web, not Desktop, as of December 2025. That is a limitation on authoring replaceable media clips; it is not evidence that CapCut Desktop cannot edit text in every project. For a specific CapCut template, check whether the wording is an editable text layer or baked into a clip, then use the controls exposed by that project.
8. Flattened artwork: what you can and cannot do
If the letters are pixels in a single image, text-layer commands cannot target them. Look for the original design file or an unflattened template from its creator. Without one, the general solution is image retouching to remove or cover the old wording and adding a new text layer that matches the design. The cited editor documentation does not define a universal retouching procedure, so expect manual work and inspect the result at full size. Keep the original file untouched and export a separate version.

9. Troubleshooting common replacement failures

- Every placeholder phrase has been replaced where intended.
- No text box clips descenders, punctuation, or a second line.
- Font, weight, color, alignment, opacity, outline, shadow, and animation match the design.
- Text remains readable over the real image or footage.
- Video start time, duration, and disappearance match the scene.
- Mobile and web previews (when relevant) show the same content.
- The exported file is opened and checked outside the editor before publishing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I edit some words but not others in the same template?
Only text layers or assets explicitly exposed as replaceable can be changed directly. Other wording may be flattened into an image or belong to a locked layer.

Do not rely on automatic resizing. Check wrapping and clipping, then shorten the copy or adjust the text box and formatting.
Does replacing a video clip replace text printed on it?
No. Media replacement changes the photo or video asset; lettering baked into that asset remains part of the pixels.
