Start with a template you can edit, replace its sample content with genuine screens from your app, check the current size requirements for each platform and device class, then export opaque JPEG or PNG files and preview them in App Store Connect. Apple’s accepted dimensions vary by device class, so check its live screenshot specifications before your final export.
What a free App Store screenshot template does—and does not do
A template is an editable starting layout: it may provide a canvas, device frame, text areas, colors, or a sequence for presenting app features. You still need to supply accurate app screens, adapt the design to your product, export the right file dimensions, and satisfy Apple’s upload rules. A template’s label or appearance is not proof that its dimensions are current or that Apple will accept the exported files.
Apple requires screenshots for an app listing; app previews are optional. Its current rules allow one to ten screenshots in JPEG, JPG, or PNG format, and screenshots cannot contain an alpha channel or transparency. The accepted pixel dimensions depend on platform and device class, so there is no single iPhone size that applies to every listing. Check the specification table for the target platform and device before setting up the canvas.
There is no source-backed figure establishing that using a free template increases downloads or conversion. Treat it as a design convenience, not a performance guarantee.

Where to find a free, editable template
Figma Community is one place to search for design resources. Figma’s Community guide explains how to explore and use community-published resources. Search for terms such as “App Store screenshot” or the target device name, then inspect individual listings for editability, canvas dimensions, included assets, and license terms. A general Figma template catalog is not evidence that a particular App Store screenshot template is currently available: Figma’s template gallery describes its wider catalog, not a verified set of App Store screenshot files.
No specific currently available free App Store screenshot template is confirmed here. If search results do not turn up a suitable file, create a simple layout yourself in a design editor or image-layout workflow rather than relying on a file with unclear dimensions or terms. Apple lists Figma among its design resources, but does not require Figma or any other particular editor.
How to use a template, from selection to upload
- List the listing contexts. Identify the platforms, device classes, and localizations you intend to support. If screenshots differ by platform, language, or interface, plan separate sets rather than assuming one design will accurately represent every version.
- Check Apple’s current dimensions. Open Screenshot specifications and find the accepted dimensions for each relevant platform and device class. Apple’s table is live and can change; check it again before exporting a final set or submitting the app.
- Choose and inspect an editable file. In Figma Community, search for the target device or “App Store screenshot.” Open the individual resource and confirm that it is editable and appropriate for the required canvas. Check its license and any extra terms before adapting or sharing it.
- Duplicate or open the template and replace its content. Insert real screens from your app. Update colors, framing, and any short explanatory copy so they match the actual interface and do not imply features the app does not have. Remove sample screens, placeholder text, and decorative elements that compete with the product.
- Check legibility at a reduced size. View the complete composition small enough to approximate how it may appear in App Store placements. Make sure important copy and app controls remain readable, and that a device frame or other decoration does not obscure the interface. Apple recommends checking how assets appear with App Store Connect’s Preview tool; see its asset best practices.
- Export opaque files at accepted dimensions. Use JPEG, JPG, or PNG and ensure the result has no alpha channel or transparency. Confirm the exported pixel dimensions against Apple’s current table rather than trusting the template’s name or original canvas.
- Upload and preview the set. In App Store Connect, open the app version and the relevant platform section, add the screenshots, and inspect the result with the Preview tool. App previews are optional; screenshots are required. Apple’s upload guide explains the upload workflow and handling of screenshot sets.
- Prepare custom assets when the shared set is not representative. Apple says that when the app UI is the same across device sizes and localizations, you can provide the highest-resolution screenshots required and they automatically scale down to smaller device sizes. If the interface or presentation differs by device or language, consider custom screenshots for those contexts through Media Manager.
How to choose between a template and a custom layout
The right workflow depends on whether the available file actually fits your app and how often you will need to revise or localize the screenshots. These are practical considerations, not measured performance rankings.
| Approach | Useful when | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Free editable Community template | You find a file with an appropriate editable layout and target-device canvas, and want a starting composition. | Confirm the individual file’s dimensions, editability, included assets, and license. Do not infer App Store compliance from its title. |
| Custom design in an editor | You need a layout tailored to your app, several locales, or repeated exports. | Set the canvas from Apple’s current device-class requirements and keep a reusable source file for revisions. |
| Direct image/layout workflow | You prefer arranging actual screenshots and copy without adopting a prebuilt template. | Check dimensions, format, opacity, and readability just as carefully as with a template. |
For repeated releases, keep the editable source and the exported files organized by platform, device context, and localization. That makes it easier to identify which assets need updating when the UI or store presentation changes.

Figma says free Community files are published under CC BY 4.0 by default, which allows sharing and adaptation with attribution, but creators may apply additional license terms. Read the individual file’s licensing information and any extra terms before using it in a commercial app listing or redistributing an adapted file. Figma’s Community copyright and licensing guidance explains the default and why file-specific terms matter. “Free to access” should not be treated as “free of all conditions.”
App Store screenshot template troubleshooting
- App Store Connect rejects the image: Compare the exported pixel dimensions with the current specification for the exact platform and device class. Also verify the file is JPEG, JPG, or PNG and contains no transparency or alpha channel.
- The template canvas looks right but the export is the wrong size: Check the exported file’s actual pixel dimensions; a design frame or mock device outline does not determine the final image size automatically. Re-export to an accepted dimension.
- Text or interface details are hard to read: Reduce the preview to a likely store-display size, shorten copy, enlarge essential elements, or simplify decoration. Use App Store Connect’s Preview tool to inspect the placement.
- A screenshot does not match the app on another device or in another language: Decide whether a shared set still represents the UI accurately. If it does not, create a custom set for that device or localization and manage it in Media Manager.
- You cannot adapt or redistribute a downloaded file: Recheck the individual Community file’s terms and attribution requirements. If the terms are unsuitable or unclear, choose another resource or build your own layout.
- Approved screenshots need changing: Apple says that once screenshots for a version are approved, a new version must be created to update them. Plan listing updates accordingly; see Apple’s upload instructions.

If you also need screenshots of live web pages—for example, to collect visual references while preparing store assets—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an App Store template or a replacement for Apple’s export requirements. One GET request can return a website capture as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API accepts parameters used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Before you submit
- Every image uses genuine app content and accurately represents the app.
- Each canvas matches a currently accepted dimension for its target platform and device class.
- Exports are JPEG, JPG, or PNG with no alpha channel or transparency.
- Copy and important interface details remain legible in App Store Connect Preview.
- Each file’s Community license and attribution terms have been checked.
- Custom device or localization assets are prepared where one shared set would misrepresent the app.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many screenshots can I upload for an App Store listing?
Apple’s current screenshot specifications allow one to ten screenshots. Check the live specification page for the platform and device class you are submitting.
Can I use a free Figma Community template for a commercial app?
It depends on the individual file’s license and any additional terms. Figma describes CC BY 4.0 as the default for free Community files, but says creators may apply other terms; inspect the file and follow its attribution requirements.
Do App Store screenshots need to be transparent PNGs?
No. Apple says screenshots cannot include alpha channels or transparency; JPEG, JPG, and PNG are accepted formats.
