How to Replace a Video in a Restream YouTube Playlist Without Stopping the Stream

You can’t replace a video inside an airing Restream Playlist. See how Studio source controls differ, and how to prepare a Playlist before it goes live.

Short answer: You can’t replace a video inside a Restream Playlist after that Playlist has gone live. Restream allows Playlist videos to be added, removed, or rearranged only before it airs. To change video content while keeping a live broadcast going, use a Restream Studio stream and replace or hide its video source instead; that does not edit the Playlist itself.

First, identify what kind of Restream stream is live

A Restream Playlist and a Restream Studio production have different controls. If your YouTube broadcast is airing from a pre-recorded Playlist, the Playlist’s video sequence is locked while it airs. If the broadcast is a Studio production, you can manage a video source during the live stream.

What is live? Can you replace a video now? What the control changes
Restream Playlist No. Restream says Playlist videos can be added, removed, or rearranged only before the Playlist goes live. While it airs, only graphics and chat can be edited. Restream Help Center The Playlist sequence cannot be edited during playback.
Restream Studio stream with a video source You can replace or hide the video source using Studio controls. Restream Help Center The Studio source changes; it does not change a Playlist’s contents.
Live stream connected to a YouTube event You may be able to connect or switch the event in certain circumstances. This changes the YouTube event destination, not the video contents in a Restream Playlist. Restream Help Center

Replace a video during a live Restream Studio stream

Use this route only if the live broadcast is a Studio production with a video source. Restream documents adding a video as a Media scene and controlling a video source while live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Add or select the video: In Restream Studio, add a Media scene and choose a video already in your library or upload the file you want to play. If you already have a video source, select it instead.
  2. Use the source controls: Restream documents controls to pause, seek, loop, maximize, replace, or hide a video, and adjust its volume. Replace the current source with the correct video, or hide it while you make the change.
  3. Switch to the relevant scene: Restream says scenes can be adjusted while a stream is live. Select the scene containing the intended video source to put it on the live production.
  4. Check the live output: Confirm that the expected video is visible and that its audio level is appropriate. Restream documents these controls but does not promise that replacing a source will be seamless, instantaneous, or free of a brief transition.

For more on video-source controls, see Play videos on your stream in Studio and Getting started with Scenes.

Change a Restream Playlist before it goes live

If the replacement must remain part of a scheduled Playlist, edit it before its scheduled broadcast begins. Restream says a Playlist can contain up to 40 videos and run for up to 24 hours; these are the limits documented in its Help Center article in 2026, so check the current article before planning a Playlist near either limit.

  1. Open the Playlist setup in Restream.
  2. Choose the correct video from your storage or upload it.
  3. Add or remove files and arrange the videos in the intended order.
  4. Preview the Playlist to check the selected content and sequence.
  5. Schedule the Playlist after the review. Restream says drafts save automatically before scheduling is complete.

Restream’s scheduling guide says prerecorded videos and Playlists can be scheduled to stream automatically, so you do not need to manually start a Playlist at the scheduled time. Platform-specific manual-start exceptions are a separate issue and do not change the rule that an airing Playlist’s video contents cannot be edited. See Create and stream a playlist of videos and Schedule a video or playlist.

Don’t mistake a YouTube event switch for a Playlist edit

Restream’s YouTube event guidance covers setting up or editing event details such as title, description, time, and channel settings. Its existing-event guide also describes connecting an event and, in some circumstances, switching to a different event while live. It says you cannot switch to an event that has already been streamed to. None of those actions changes the Playlist’s video sequence. For event setup details, see How to schedule a YouTube event and Connect an existing YouTube event to Restream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the Playlist is already airing?

  • The stream must stay in its current Playlist: You cannot swap, remove, add, or reorder its videos while it airs. Plan a correction for a later Playlist or broadcast.
  • The current live broadcast must continue with different video: A Studio source replacement is a separate workflow. It is useful only if the live production is a Studio stream with a video source; it does not modify the Playlist that is already airing.
  • You need to change the YouTube event: Treat this as a destination-event change, not a content edit. Check the current Restream guidance for event-switch eligibility before making a live change.

Playlist access and plan details

Restream’s Help Center article, accessed in 2026, says Playlists require an Upload & Stream add-on tier. It lists these tier details, which may change; check Restream’s current plan information before purchasing:
