To replace the video in an active 24/7 YouTube stream, switch the media source in the encoder or cloud playout service that is sending the feed, while keeping that system connected to the same YouTube event. YouTube’s Live Control Room settings do not provide a documented universal command to swap the video file inside an active event. The exact steps depend on your encoder or playout service.
How the replacement works
Your encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. The encoder or playout service determines what media is in that feed. Replacing a file therefore means changing the source at that layer, not editing stream metadata in YouTube Studio.

YouTube’s instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” If you want to preserve the active event, avoid stopping the encoder’s content transmission during the switch. The source-switch approach follows from YouTube’s documented feed workflow; YouTube’s cited guidance does not provide a universal procedure or guarantee a seamless transition.
Replace the video without ending the event
- Identify the system producing the feed. It may be streaming software on a computer, a standalone hardware encoder, or a cloud playout service. YouTube describes software and standalone hardware encoders and lists OBS as open-source streaming software. Find the system currently connected to the event before changing anything.
- Prepare the replacement in that system. Add the replacement file or playlist before switching if your encoder or service allows it. Check that its media format, audio, and aspect ratio fit the current production settings. YouTube’s cited instructions do not specify file-preparation requirements for this particular midstream operation, so use the encoder or service’s current guidance for supported formats and source controls.
- Switch the source while maintaining the outgoing connection. Use the encoder or playout service’s source or playlist controls to make the replacement the active media. Do not disconnect the encoder or stop it from sending content to YouTube if the goal is to keep the current event live.
- Verify picture and sound. Check the encoder’s preview, then check the public stream for both video and audio. A preview confirms what the encoder is producing; the public stream confirms what viewers are receiving. Do not assume viewers’ playback positions will all move to the replacement at the same point.
- Keep the event’s metadata separate from its media. YouTube lets you edit stream details in its settings, but changing metadata is not a way to replace the live video input.
Choose where to manage the source
The right approach depends on where the current feed comes from. YouTube’s materials establish these categories, but do not provide a head-to-head performance comparison or vendor-specific source-switch steps.

| Approach | What it means for a replacement | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud playout | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. | It is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a camera feed. Each slot includes pooled storage of 10 GB per active slot, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. See StreamNeo. |
| Self-operated software encoder | You control the media source locally while the software sends the feed to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software at no charge. | Confirm the software’s current source and playlist controls. You must manage the computer, encoder session, files, and internet connection. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | The encoder sends the feed as part of an existing production setup. | Check whether that specific device supports changing its media input while connected. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish that buying hardware is necessary for this task. |
| Other cloud playout service | A hosted service can manage continuous prerecorded-video streams without requiring a dedicated PC, depending on its features. | YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. Confirm its current source controls, features, and pricing directly with the provider. |
What YouTube settings and features do—and do not—change
Stream key and server URL
The stream key and server URL let the encoder send its feed to YouTube. They establish the connection; changing a key or URL is not the same as selecting a different video source. Keep the active encoder connected if preserving the event is your priority.
Stream metadata
Title and other stream details describe the event. Editing them does not swap the video being sent by the encoder.

Live Redirect
Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current stream ends. It is not a feature for replacing the media source inside an event that is still live.
DVR and viewer playback
YouTube describes DVR as allowing viewers to pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream. Its cited guidance does not explain how viewers’ DVR positions behave when the encoder changes sources. Check the live output after the switch rather than promising that every viewer will see the replacement at the same playback point.

Plan for the recording separately
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish the archive outcome for every longer broadcast, so do not assume a 24/7 event will produce a complete replay. If you need a copy of the outgoing program, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify the current behavior for your event.
Common problems and what to check
- The event ends during the change: The encoder may have stopped sending content or disconnected. Restore the encoder’s feed if possible; if the event has ended, start or schedule another event rather than treating a source switch as a metadata edit.
- The preview changes but viewers do not see the replacement: Check that the intended encoder or playout output is still connected to the event and that the new source is active in the output being sent to YouTube. Then check the public stream.
- There is video but no audio, or the reverse: Recheck the replacement file’s audio and the encoder’s active audio source and output configuration. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify the settings for your particular encoder.
- The replacement looks wrong: Compare its aspect ratio and format with the current production setup, then consult the encoder or service’s format guidance.
- Viewers report different playback points: DVR lets viewers pause and rewind, and YouTube’s cited material does not establish how source changes affect every viewer’s position. Ask viewers to refresh if needed, but do not promise a synchronized transition.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your stream is made from uploaded videos rather than a camera, StreamNeo can keep the YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
