Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before restoring a snapshot into a project, find out whether the operation creates a new resource or overwrites an existing one. Restore behavior varies by provider and resource type; treat the chosen destination as destructive until its current documentation confirms otherwise. The safest general approach is to preserve a recovery point, restore to an isolated target when possible, validate it, and only then switch workloads.
What “restore” can do to a project
A snapshot restore is not one universal operation. Depending on the service and resource, it may create a separate resource, replace data in an existing target, or make that target unavailable while restoration runs. A project is also more than its primary data: permissions, networking, encryption, software versions, and dependent services may need separate verification.

- New resource: The restored copy is created separately, so you can test it before directing users or applications to it.
- Existing target: Current target data may be replaced. Treat this as a potentially irreversible change.
- Temporary outage or other effects: Some services make a target unavailable during restoration or overwrite recovery-related data as well as the main dataset.
For example, Google Cloud Backup and DR says restoring production data to a selected point in time replaces current application data and warns that the operation cannot be undone (Google Cloud Backup and DR restore overview). Google Cloud SQL supports restores to new or existing instances, including across projects or regions; an overwrite requires selecting the destination and confirming its name, and can overwrite current data and point-in-time recovery logs (Cloud SQL restore documentation; Cloud SQL restore overview).

Choose a restore mode before starting
Check the documentation for the exact provider and resource type, then confirm the destination shown in the interface or command. Do not assume a button labeled “Restore” means the same thing across services.

| Service or restore method | Destination behavior | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Backup and DR | Options vary by supported workload; the overview describes restoring production data to a selected point in time and also presents restore-to-new and selective recovery options. | Restoring production data replaces current application data. The operation cannot be undone, according to Google’s documentation. Source |
| Google Cloud SQL | Can restore to a new or existing instance, including in another project or region. | Overwriting an existing target replaces current data and can overwrite point-in-time recovery logs. Confirm the destination name. Source |
| AWS Backup | Most resource types restore as new resources. | Redshift Serverless namespace restore and SAP HANA on EC2 are documented destructive exceptions. Check the resource-specific instructions. Source |
| Amazon RDS DB snapshot | Restores to a new DB instance, not an existing one. | Review engine version, encryption, storage, and configuration before cutover. RDS documents that magnetic storage is no longer a valid restore target starting July 1, 2026; verify the current policy before relying on it. Source |
| Microsoft SQL Server RESTORE | Ordinary restore safeguards against replacing a different database; the REPLACE option bypasses several checks. | Microsoft warns that REPLACE can cause accidental overwrite or loss of committed work. A restore cannot simply be undone, though a restore sequence can be restarted. Source |
| MongoDB Atlas cluster-level restore | Restores onto the selected target cluster. | Deletes target data and leaves the cluster unavailable during restoration. Atlas describes fallback snapshots as a last resort because they may result in inconsistent data. Source |
Prepare the source, destination, and recovery path
- Identify the exact recovery point. Record the account or organization, project, region, resource identifier, and snapshot timestamp. Confirm that the snapshot belongs to the intended workload and is valid for the target resource type.
- Confirm what will be replaced. Determine whether the operation creates a new resource, overwrites the original, or overwrites a different existing destination. Inspect the selected target immediately before submitting the restore.
- Preserve any live state you might need. If the target contains data worth keeping, take or retain an independent recovery point before replacement. This is a general safety measure, not a universal provider-specific procedure.
- Check compatibility and surrounding configuration. Verify version or engine compatibility, encryption, identity and access controls, networking, and dependent services. A restored database or resource may not reproduce every part of its former project configuration.
- Plan for downtime and cutover. Identify what users or services will be unavailable, how you will prevent writes to the wrong target, and how you will switch traffic only after validation.
Restore to a separate target when possible
An isolated restore can reduce the risk of destroying the current working copy. Amazon RDS DB snapshot restore creates a new DB instance, while AWS Backup generally restores most resource types as new resources, subject to its listed exceptions. Google Cloud SQL also allows restores to a new instance. These behaviors are service-specific, so verify the current instructions for the resource you are restoring.
After the separate target is ready, compare it with expectations and test application access before redirecting workloads. A new resource reduces overwrite risk, but does not by itself guarantee that its configuration, permissions, or dependencies match production.

Monitor the restore and validate before switching use
Wait for the provider’s operation or restore job to report completion. A completed job confirms that the service finished its operation; it does not prove that the application is correct or ready for production.
- Check the expected records, files, or other critical data at the selected recovery point.
- Test application login, connectivity, and essential workflows against the restored target.
- Review logs and investigate errors or unexpected gaps before directing users to it.
- Verify access controls, network paths, encryption settings, and connections to dependent systems.
- For a target that is unavailable during restore, account for the outage in the cutover plan.
AWS Backup documents restore testing as a way to simulate recovery and assess recovery objectives (AWS Backup restore testing). A snapshot’s existence alone is not evidence that a usable recovery has been tested.

Record the decision and cutover
Keep an operational record of the selected snapshot, source and destination identifiers, operator, start and end times, validation outcome, and rollback route. These controls make it easier to understand what changed and what recovery option remains if the restored target fails validation.
