First identify the exact Pixel feature: Google Pixel features can depend on the phone, Android version, and region, and some features described as discontinued may still be available through a different app or setting. For example, Google says Now Playing remains available as a standalone app, so it is not accurate to call it discontinued. Once you know the feature and confirm its status, choose an Android app only if it performs the same job you need.
Identify the feature and check whether it was discontinued
“A Pixel feature” is not specific enough to choose a replacement. Write down the feature’s name and what you used it for, then check Google’s current support page for that feature. Look for whether Google says it was removed, moved to another app, or is unavailable on a particular device or in a particular market.

For example, Google’s current Now Playing support page directs users to get the Now Playing app from Play Store. Google says setup can take up to 24 hours before the feature is ready. The Google Store description also presents Now Playing as an app. That is a change in access, not evidence that Now Playing was discontinued.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck whether your Pixel was eligible
Before looking for an alternative, confirm your Pixel model, Android version, and country or region. Google’s June 2026 Pixel Drop and its Pixel Drop archive show that feature announcements can carry rollout and availability qualifications. Those qualifications vary by feature, so they do not establish eligibility for an unnamed one.

Device restrictions can also apply to individual capabilities. For instance, Google’s Recorder support page says some Recorder features are available only on Pixel 9 and later. That specific restriction should not be assumed to apply to other Pixel features.
Match an Android app to the feature’s actual job
Describe the behavior you want, not just the feature’s name. A Pixel feature may combine several functions, and an Android app that handles one may not replace the others. Check the current Play Store listing and the app’s own privacy and support information for the phone and Android version you use.

Example: replacing music recognition on a non-Pixel Android phone
If the feature you meant is Now Playing and your goal is to identify music around you, distinguish its three useful behaviors: automatic background recognition, identification when you tap to search, and a history of recognized songs. Google says automatic recognition uses an on-device music library. If you tap the lock-screen search button, Google receives a short digital audio fingerprint to identify the music. The app can also show a list of recognized songs and let you share, search for, or listen to them.
Android Central describes Shazam’s Auto Shazam as an option for ongoing music recognition on Android. Treat it as a possible alternative for that part of the job, not as an identical replacement: the cited account does not establish equivalent privacy, battery use, device support, or history behavior. Check Shazam’s current Play Store listing and disclosures before relying on it.
