How to Replace a Computer Power Button on a Desktop or Laptop

A computer that will not start may not have a bad power button. Learn how to identify the button design, choose a compatible part, and approach desktop and laptop replacement safely.

A computer’s power button can be replaceable, but a computer that will not start does not prove the button has failed. On a desktop, the button is often a case switch connected by a cable to the motherboard’s front-panel header. On a laptop, it may be a separate board or part of a larger assembly, and accessing it can require substantial disassembly. Identify the exact model, diagnose the fault, and follow its service manual before opening the computer.

First check whether the power button is actually the problem

A failed start can have causes other than the button. Intel lists the desktop case power button and its wires as one possible cause and advises checking the motherboard manual to find the switch header. That makes the button a troubleshooting branch, not a diagnosis: follow the broader power checks in Intel’s guide to why a computer may not turn on before ordering a part.

Do not assume a universal pinout or try to bridge motherboard pins based on general advice. The sources cited here do not establish a safe, universal procedure for testing continuity or probing a powered computer. Use the documentation for your exact motherboard and model; if you cannot confirm the relevant connector and safe procedure, get qualified help.

Identify the button design and the right replacement

Look up the exact computer or case model and its service documentation. Determine whether the suspected fault is in a simple desktop case switch and cable, a laptop power-button board and cable, or a button incorporated into a larger assembly. These parts are not interchangeable by appearance alone.

  • External Desktop PC Power Button – Ideal for home use, computer labs, barebone systems, and custom chassis builds. If your PC case is placed in a hard-to-reach location, this extension switch allows you to relocate the power button for easy access and convenient operation.
  • Easy Sticker Installation: Simply connect the POWER SW, RESET SW, POWER LED, and HDD LED cables to the corresponding motherboard headers, then secure the button in place using the adhesive sticker.
  • Replacement Solution for Damaged Chassis Power Button If your PC case’s built-in power button is faulty, this external switch is an excellent replacement. The wiring can be easily routed through various openings, such as: front panel optical drive bay, rear panel fan vent, back panel expansion slot
  • Comes with 1 to 2 splitter boards & splitter cables: The small 1-to-2 splitter allows the power button to work alongside your original one. If space is limited, use the included 1-to-2 splitter cable instead.
  • Package included: 1x Computer Power Switch ON/OFF with 2M cable; 1x 1 to 2 splitter board; 1x 1 to 2 splitter cable; 1x adhesive stickers; 1x installation manua.
  • Desktop: A replacement case switch or cable is worth considering only if diagnosis points to that component and its connector and mounting match the system. A “2-pin PC case power switch” is not guaranteed to fit every desktop.
  • Laptop: Search by the exact model or service tag, then verify the part number and connector against the manual or other reliable model-specific documentation. Some models have a separately replaceable board; others may require replacing an integrated assembly.
  • Access: Check how many parts the official procedure requires you to remove. A repair that involves extensive disassembly, unfamiliar connectors, or steps outside your skill level is better left to qualified repair support.

How to replace a desktop power button

Desktop procedures vary, so use this only as an example of the sequence in Lenovo’s ThinkCentre P520c power-button procedure, not as instructions for another model.

  1. Prepare the computer. Read the model’s safety information first. Turn the computer off, disconnect its power cord and cables, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparing it to be serviced. Lenovo’s ThinkCentre M920t procedure likewise starts by turning off the computer and connected devices and disconnecting power cords and cables.
  2. Open the case as specified. On the P520c, the documented sequence includes removing the front bezel. Other desktops may require different cover or bezel steps.
  3. Disconnect the button cable. Locate the power-button cable and disconnect it from the system-board connector identified in the model’s documentation. Do not guess at a connector or header.
  4. Remove and replace the button. Release the button from the bezel, install a compatible replacement in the specified position, and reconnect its cable.
  5. Reassemble and check. Reinstall the bezel and complete the model’s reassembly procedure before reconnecting power and testing the computer.

If the replacement does not resolve the start problem, the button may not have been the cause, or another fault may remain. Avoid repeated improvised electrical tests; return to model-specific troubleshooting or seek service.

Why laptop power-button replacement is model-specific

Do not apply desktop front-panel-header instructions to a laptop. Laptop designs and access paths differ even between models from the same manufacturer.

Dell Inspiron 7490

Dell’s Inspiron 7490 service procedure lists prior component removals—including the base cover and battery, plus the applicable fan and I/O board—before the power button can be removed. That access requirement is a reason to read the full service sequence before deciding whether to attempt the repair.

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3567)

The Inspiron 15 3000/3567 manual describes a distinct power-button board and cable. Its removal procedure includes removing the battery, releasing a cable latch, disconnecting the cable, removing a screw and tape, and lifting out the board. Follow that model’s manual rather than treating the board as a desktop switch.

Other laptop designs

An older HP Maintenance and Service Guide documents a switch-cover and power-button-board assembly, and instructs users to unplug AC power and the adapter before the procedure. This is an example of another design, not a procedure for all HP laptops. If the exact model’s service instructions are unavailable or the documented teardown is beyond your experience, use qualified repair support.

Before opening the computer

  • Confirm the exact model and locate its official safety and service instructions.
  • Turn the computer off and disconnect power and attached cables as the instructions require. Lenovo explicitly warns users to consult its safety information before opening its desktop systems.
  • Do not assume that a laptop battery, power-button board, connector, or assembly is accessible or replaceable in the same way as another model’s.
  • Stop if the procedure calls for unfamiliar disassembly or you cannot confidently identify the part and connector. A repair professional can assess the fault and compatibility without relying on guesswork.
