How to Repair the Windows EFI System Partition Safely

For a confirmed UEFI/GPT Windows installation, identify the real Windows directory and EFI System Partition in recovery, then rebuild boot files with BCDBoot. Avoid formatting until the target and consequences are clear.

For a Windows PC that boots in UEFI mode from a GPT disk, the usual EFI System Partition (ESP) repair is to identify the real Windows volume and ESP in recovery, then rebuild the boot files with Microsoft’s BCDBoot tool. Do not assume Windows is on C:, and do not format the ESP as a first step. These instructions are not for legacy BIOS/MBR systems.

Before you begin: confirm this is the right repair

The ESP is a separate UEFI boot partition, not the partition that holds your Windows files. Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT layout uses a FAT32 ESP alongside the Windows and recovery partitions. Its deployment guidance specifies a minimum ESP size of 200 MB for 512-native or 512e sector devices and 300 MB for 4K-native devices; those requirements do not mean an existing smaller ESP must automatically be resized to repair boot files. See Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT partition guidance.

Proceed only if the installation you are repairing uses UEFI and GPT. Pause and get machine-specific help if you cannot confirm the boot mode, have multiple drives or candidate EFI partitions, use a complex multi-boot setup, or suspect disk failure. Microsoft warns that the system drive may not be Disk 0 and that multiple ESPs can lead to selecting the wrong target: Configure Multiple Hard Drives.

UEFI/GPT and BIOS/MBR repairs are different

Firmware mode and partition style determine the boot structure. Microsoft’s guidance treats UEFI/GPT separately from BIOS/MBR; the latter relies on an active system partition, so the UEFI commands and assumptions below should not be applied to it. Check Microsoft’s overview of hard drives and partition styles and its BIOS/MBR partition guidance.

Open Command Prompt from Windows recovery

If Windows will not start, boot from Windows installation media or a Windows recovery environment and open Command Prompt. Microsoft documents this recovery route in its BCDBoot repair instructions and in the support guide for “An operating system wasn’t found”.

Identify the Windows volume and EFI partition

Recovery can assign different drive letters than normal Windows, and letters can change between boots. Identify the Windows installation by locating the volume that contains its Windows directory; do not presume it is C:. Then identify the FAT32 ESP from the disk layout and system-partition information, and confirm which physical disk it belongs to before changing anything.

  1. At Command Prompt, enter diskpart, then list volume to inspect volumes and their file systems, sizes, and letters.
  2. Use the volume information and disk layout to identify the FAT32 EFI System Partition and the disk it is on. If there is more than one plausible ESP, stop rather than guessing.
  3. Exit DiskPart with exit. Check candidate drive letters for the actual Windows directory, for example by entering dir D:Windows. Replace D: with each likely Windows volume letter until you find the installed Windows directory.

Microsoft documents using a temporary drive letter when inspecting the system partition, and cautions that drive letters may differ: BCD system store settings for UEFI. Assigning a letter is not necessary just to run BCDBoot when you have already identified the Windows directory.

bcdboot D:Windows

D: is only an example: substitute the letter you verified. Microsoft describes BCDBoot as copying boot-environment files from the Windows directory to the system partition and creating a BCD store. In UEFI mode, it places boot files on the ESP; firmware-entry behavior depends on the options used. See the BCDBoot repair workflow and the BCDBoot command reference.

Do not add extra BCDEdit or firmware commands unless your specific symptom and disk layout call for them. The repair workflow does not require blindly formatting the ESP.

Why formatting the ESP should not be the default

Formatting deletes the partition’s contents, and the wrong target can make the boot problem worse or affect another operating system’s boot files. Microsoft presents formatting as optional in its documented BCDBoot repair sequence, not as a required step for every repair. Consider it only when the target is unquestionably identified and you understand the consequences; there is no single universally safe reformat command for every OEM, multi-boot, or Windows layout.

Restart and assess the result

After BCDBoot completes, restart the PC and check whether Windows starts. If it does not, check whether Windows Boot Manager appears in the firmware’s boot options. A continuing failure can involve the wrong Windows volume, firmware boot order, another BCD issue, disk damage, BitLocker, or an OEM-specific layout. Do not respond by repeatedly formatting partitions. Microsoft’s UEFI BCD documentation describes the Windows Boot Manager path and firmware display order for qualified follow-up diagnosis.
