Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If an Exchange EDB is reported as corrupt, do not start with Eseutil /p. First preserve the database and its transaction logs, identify whether the problem is a recoverable dirty shutdown or structural corruption, and check for a usable backup. For Exchange Server 2016, 2019, and Subscription Edition, Microsoft’s documented recovery-database workflow uses log replay and an RDB to recover only the mailbox data you need.
First identify what “corrupt” means
An Exchange database that will not mount is not necessarily structurally damaged. A database in dirty shutdown may simply need its remaining transaction logs replayed. Page or structural corruption is a different problem and can require a more cautious recovery path. The error message alone does not establish the cause.

Before choosing a procedure, record the Exchange version and build, the database and log locations, the exact error, and whether the goal is to restore the whole database or recover one mailbox or a few items. Microsoft’s current recovery-database instructions cover Exchange Server 2016, 2019, and Subscription Edition; use guidance specific to the installed version and update level.

- Stop changes to the affected files. Avoid running repair utilities against the only copy of the EDB.
- Preserve a complete working copy. Copy the EDB together with its transaction logs and checkpoint files, and leave the original untouched. This preserves a rollback point and gives a support specialist an unmodified set to assess.
- Check for a healthy backup and its associated logs. Confirm that the backup is consistent and that the log sequence needed for recovery is available. Use the integrity procedure for your Exchange version: Microsoft’s cited backup-integrity guidance is specifically for Exchange 2013, so its exact commands should not be applied to later versions without version-appropriate confirmation. That Exchange 2013 guidance says required logs must pass consistency checks and a negative Eseutil ERRORLEVEL indicates a corrupt file. Microsoft: Backup integrity checks for Exchange 2013.
Prefer restore and log replay over hard repair
When a suitable backup exists, restore or copy the recovered database and its logs to a recovery location, then use soft recovery to replay logs and bring the database to a clean-shutdown state. Microsoft’s Recovery Database procedure uses Eseutil /R for this step. Its example syntax is:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Eseutil /R EXX /l <RDBLogFilePath> /d <RDBEdbFolder>
EXX is an example log prefix, not a value to assume for every database. Confirm the database’s actual log prefix and check the log and database paths, Exchange version, and recovery location before running a command. Do not run it against the only copy of the files. Follow Microsoft’s version-specific procedure for the full restore workflow: Restore mailbox data using a recovery database in Exchange Server.
Recover a mailbox or items with a Recovery Database
A Recovery Database (RDB) is a temporary Exchange database used to mount restored database content for recovery. It lets an administrator extract a mailbox or selected items without replacing the live production database, making it useful when only particular data is needed.

Eseutil /Runtil the restored database reaches clean shutdown. - Create and mount an RDB using the Exchange management procedure for the installed version.
- Check the mailbox inventory in the mounted recovery database to identify the mailbox to recover.
- Submit a restore request with
New-MailboxRestoreRequestto merge the required mailbox or items into a target mailbox. - Check the request status and verify the recovered content in Outlook or Outlook on the web.
An RDB is not a substitute production database: ordinary client access is blocked, its mailboxes cannot be connected directly to user accounts, and only one RDB can be mounted at a time on a mailbox server. Microsoft’s overview explains these limits and the RDB’s intended role: Recovery databases in Exchange Server.

When to stop before Eseutil /p
Eseutil /p performs hard repair; it is not the normal next step for a dirty-shutdown database. The Microsoft Exchange Team describes database repair as a last-ditch effort when no other recovery method is available and advises following the repair process only at Microsoft Support’s direction. Hard repair can discard damaged structures or data, so it cannot guarantee a complete recovery. If there is no usable backup and the database matters, keep the untouched copy and contact Microsoft Support or a qualified Exchange recovery specialist before attempting it. The Exchange Team’s caution appears in its “New Support Policy for Repaired Exchange Databases” post, originally published in 2015 and updated in 2019.

Check this Exchange 2016/2019 long-value issue
Microsoft Support documents a specific condition in Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 in which a corrupted long value (LV) can prevent Eseutil /p from running because the schema for the table hosting the LV tree is not loaded. The article’s stated minimum fixes are Exchange 2019 CU7 or later, or Exchange 2016 CU18 or later. These are historical thresholds from that article, not a recommendation to install an old cumulative update; check the server’s current update level and Microsoft’s current guidance before acting. Microsoft Support: Eseutil /p cannot run if a long value is corrupted.
