To change a PDF’s page order, drag its page thumbnails into place; to remove pages, delete them; to save selected pages separately, use Extract. In Acrobat desktop, these tools are under All tools > Organize pages. Acrobat on the web also supports reordering and deletion, but its edits are saved to Adobe cloud storage. For local page-range and batch extraction, PDFsam Basic documents a desktop workflow for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Choose the right operation first
| What you want | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Change page order in the same PDF | Move or reorder | Pages change position in the document. |
| Remove pages from the PDF | Delete | The selected pages are removed from the edited document. |
| Save selected pages as another PDF | Extract | A new PDF is created. You can keep the selected pages in the original or choose to remove them after extraction. |
Moving and copying are not the same: moving changes where a page appears, while copying duplicates it. Adobe’s desktop instructions for moving or copying pages cover both operations.

Reorder pages in Acrobat desktop
- Open the PDF and select All tools > Organize pages.
- Select the page thumbnail or thumbnails you want to move. To select multiple non-adjacent pages, hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS while selecting.
- Drag the selection to the desired position. Alternatively, open the thumbnail’s More menu and choose Cut or Copy; select the insertion point and choose Paste.
- Save the PDF.
Use Cut when the page should leave its original position. Use Copy when you want an additional instance. Adobe documents these thumbnail workflows in its Acrobat desktop page-organizing help.

Open All tools > Organize pages, select the page thumbnails to remove, use the delete control in the page-organizing view, and save the resulting PDF. The precise control presentation may vary by Acrobat version, so use the control shown in your installed app rather than relying on a specific icon or menu label.

Web
Open the PDF in Acrobat on the web and organize its pages. Hover over the thumbnail you want to remove, select Delete, then select Save. Adobe says the organized PDF is automatically saved to Adobe cloud storage. This matters if you are handling sensitive documents: choose a workflow consistent with your organization’s privacy and data-handling requirements. Adobe’s web page-organizing instructions also document reordering, rotating, and inserting pages from another file.
Extract selected pages into a new PDF in Acrobat desktop
- Open the PDF and select All tools > Organize pages.
- Select the page thumbnails or page range to extract, then choose Extract pages.
- Choose the output behavior: select Delete pages after extracting to remove those pages from the source PDF, or select Extract pages as separate files to create individual PDFs. Leave both options unchecked to create a new PDF while retaining the selected pages in the source.
- Select Extract, then save the new PDF when prompted.
Extraction preserves page content, form fields, comments, and links, but Adobe says associated bookmarks and article threads are not extracted. If readers rely on those navigation structures, plan to recreate or check them in the new document. See Adobe’s Acrobat desktop extraction instructions.

Extract page ranges locally with PDFsam Basic
PDFsam Basic documents extraction of individual pages and ranges, including examples such as 2,5-7,12- and last. Its extraction workflow can process multiple PDFs in a batch and lets you choose whether to produce one file per range. The vendor describes Basic as free and open source, and says files are processed locally rather than uploaded; those are vendor statements, not independent security findings. Check the settings and output carefully before sharing extracted files.

Check the output before sharing it
- Open the saved PDF and confirm the page order and page count.
- For extraction, verify that the new file contains the intended pages and that the original still has—or no longer has—those pages as intended.
- Check forms, comments, links, and navigation. In Acrobat extraction, bookmarks and article threads associated with extracted pages do not come across.
- Confirm the destination and storage behavior. Acrobat on the web saves the organized file to Adobe cloud storage; PDFsam Basic’s local-processing description is the vendor’s statement.
