For a one-off PDF, open the webpage’s print dialog, choose Landscape for orientation, then select Save as PDF or the equivalent destination. If you control the page, use CSS @page and @media print; for repeatable automation, Playwright’s page.pdf() accepts a landscape option.

Save a webpage as a landscape PDF in a browser
- Open the webpage you want to save.
- Open the browser’s print dialog using its Print command.
- Set the page orientation to Landscape.
- Choose Save as PDF or the browser’s equivalent PDF destination.
- Check the preview, including page breaks and scaling, then save the PDF.
Browser labels and dialog layouts vary. The essential setting is the print dialog’s own orientation choice; changing the screen window’s shape does not set the PDF page orientation.

Set landscape pages with CSS
If you control the page, the CSS @page at-rule can specify printed page size, orientation, and margins. MDN describes @page as a way to modify aspects of printed pages: MDN: @page CSS at-rule.

Generate a landscape PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() renders with print CSS media. Pass landscape: true to request landscape orientation. The following is a complete Node.js example using Playwright’s documented API; install Playwright and its browser before running it.

Choose between API dimensions and CSS page size
Use format (or explicit width and height) when the script should determine the paper size. If the page’s CSS @page declaration should take priority over the PDF API’s format or dimensions, set preferCSSPageSize: true. Keep landscape: true when you want the API to request landscape orientation.

- Paper: Playwright defaults to Letter when
formatis omitted. Choose an appropriate format, such as A4, Letter, Legal, Tabloid, or Ledger. - Margins: Playwright documents margins as defaulting to none. Specify them if content needs breathing room or risks reaching page edges.
- Scale: Playwright’s supported scale range is 0.1 to 2. Adjust scale if content does not fit, but avoid shrinking text so much that it becomes hard to read.
- Backgrounds:
printBackgrounddefaults tofalse. Set it totruewhen the PDF should retain background colors or images.
Fix common landscape PDF problems
- The PDF is still portrait: In a browser, check the print dialog’s orientation setting. For CSS, confirm the
@pagerule is loaded for print. In Playwright, passlandscape: true, or use CSS page sizing withpreferCSSPageSize: truewhen the CSS size should take precedence. - Content is clipped or too small: Review paper format, margins, and scale. Landscape orientation alone cannot make an overly wide layout fit legibly. Choose a suitable paper size and adjust print styles before reducing scale substantially.
- The PDF shows the screen layout: Add or correct print-specific rules in
@media print, or use a print stylesheet to hide navigation and other screen-only elements. - Background colors or images are missing in Playwright: Enable
printBackground: true; its default isfalse. - Colors differ in Playwright output: PDF printing modifies colors by default. Playwright’s documentation points to
-webkit-print-color-adjustwhen exact color rendering is needed. - CSS page rules behave differently across browsers: MDN marks
@pageas Baseline 2024 and cautions that older devices or browsers may not support every part consistently. Test the browser you intend to use.

Does landscape orientation make every webpage fit on one PDF page?
No. Paper size, margins, scale, page breaks, and print-specific layout also affect fit; landscape alone does not guarantee a single page.
Can I set a custom paper size in Playwright?
Yes. Playwright’s PDF API supports paper formats as well as width and height dimensions; use `preferCSSPageSize: true` if the page’s CSS `@page` size should take priority.
