How to Rename Photos on Android: 3 Proven Ways

Use a file manager to rename Android photos, with exact steps for Files by Google, Samsung My Files and cloud-only Google Photos images.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to rename an Android photo is with a file manager: open Files by Google (or Samsung My Files), locate the image, press and hold it, choose More → Rename, keep the file extension, and confirm. Google Photos generally does not rename the underlying local file directly.

First, identify what you want to rename

A filename is the name stored on your phone, such as IMG_20260818_143012.jpg. A photo description, album name, people or location label, and EXIF data (camera, date, GPS and orientation information) are separate.

A normal filesystem rename changes the filename, not the picture or its embedded EXIF data. Downloading, editing, exporting or re-uploading can create a different copy, however, so retain the original until you have checked the replacement.

Where Android photos are stored

Folders differ by phone, app and storage configuration. Check these common locations:

  • Internal storage/Download for downloaded files
  • App-created folders such as Pictures/WhatsApp
  • Pictures, DCIM, Download or an app-named folder for edited and exported images
  • An SD card, if your phone supports removable storage

A picture visible in Google Photos may be cloud-only and therefore absent from these folders.

Method 1: Rename with Files by Google

Files by Google documents the following selection and rename path: Google’s Files help.

  1. Open Files by Google.
  2. Tap Images, or open Internal storage and browse to the folder.
  3. In grid view, press and hold the photo. In list view, tap the three-dot More button beside it.
  4. Tap Rename.
  5. Replace the descriptive part of the name, keeping the final extension.
  6. Tap OK.

For example, rename IMG_20260818_143012.jpg to family-picnic-august-2026.jpg. Keep the ending as .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .webp. Do not create family-picnic-august-2026.jpg.jpg or remove the extension unless the app explicitly manages it for you.

Method 2: Rename on a Samsung Galaxy with My Files

On most Galaxy phones, My Files is the most consistent route:

  4. Tap More → Rename.
  5. Enter the new filename and tap Rename, Save or the equivalent confirmation button.

Samsung notes that screens and available options vary by model, carrier and software version: Samsung support instructions and Samsung’s device-support guidance.

What about Samsung Gallery?

Some One UI versions expose a filename through Gallery. Open the photo, tap the three-dot menu or swipe up for details, and look for Edit, Details or an editable filename. This is model- and version-dependent. If you do not see a filename control, use My Files.

Method 3: Rename a photo that exists only in Google Photos

Google Photos is primarily a library and backup service, not a dependable file-renaming tool. Google Photos Help Community guidance describes saving a local copy, renaming it in a file manager and uploading it again:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Photos and select the image.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu and choose Download or Save to device, when available.
  3. Open Files by Google, My Files or another file manager.
  4. Find the downloaded copy, commonly in Download.
  5. Press and hold it, choose Rename, enter the new name and confirm.
  6. If needed, upload or back up the renamed copy.

This can create a second photo. Before deleting anything, check which copy is backed up, whether dates and metadata match, and whether deleting one copy would remove it from synchronized devices.

Choose the right method

Situation Best route Reason
Photo is local on most Android phones Files by Google Broadly applicable and directly documented
Samsung Galaxy phone My Files Usually the most stable Samsung-specific path
Photo appears only in Google Photos Save locally, then rename A file manager cannot rename a file that is not downloaded
Cannot locate the image Search by filename and check likely folders, app folders and SD card Storage locations vary
Need a searchable label rather than a filename Use albums, descriptions, tags or Photos search Those features organize library information without changing the file

Rename several photos safely

Built-in file managers may handle one file at a time. For many images, an optional batch-renaming app or another file manager may help, but review its permissions and preview the proposed names first. Keep the original extension, use unique names and avoid any Replace prompt unless you intentionally want to overwrite an existing file.

Use a filename that will keep working

A practical convention is YYYY-MM-DD-subject-location-number.extension, for example 2026-08-18-family-picnic-central-park-01.jpg.

  • Use a descriptive subject.
  • Use YYYY-MM-DD when chronological sorting matters.
  • Separate words with hyphens and avoid unnecessary punctuation.
  • Keep names reasonably short and unique within the destination folder.
  • Follow the receiving website’s rules; upload portals may prohibit spaces or special characters.

Fixes when Rename is missing or the result looks wrong

No Rename option

  • Make sure you selected the file rather than opening it.
  • If it is cloud-only, download it first.
  • Use a file manager instead of Google Photos or a gallery app.
  • Check storage permissions and whether the folder is protected.
  • For a restricted or inaccessible SD-card location, copy the image to Download, rename and verify the copy before removing anything.

The old name still appears

Close and reopen the gallery, then check the actual file in the file manager. Search for both names and confirm the folder path. A cached gallery entry, an unsynchronized cloud copy or a second original file may be what you are seeing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The photo disappears from an album

Renaming normally does not move a file, but a gallery may refresh its index. Check the physical folder and allow the gallery to rescan.

The extension changed or vanished

.jpg, .jpeg, .png and .webp identify formats. Changing photo.jpg to photo.png does not convert the image; it only gives it the wrong label. Use an image-conversion tool when you need another format.

A duplicate-name warning appears

Two files in one folder normally cannot share the same complete name. Choose a unique name, or select Replace only when you deliberately intend to overwrite the existing file.

A renamed source is not the file an app uploads

Messaging, editing and sharing apps often export a new copy. Rename the final file you intend to submit or share, not merely an earlier source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cloud copy keeps its old name

A local rename, a rename inside a cloud-storage app, a photo description and a newly uploaded copy are different operations. Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive may store separate cloud objects, so a phone-level rename is not guaranteed to propagate.

FAQ

Can I rename a photo directly in Google Photos?

Not reliably as an underlying filesystem rename. Save or download the image, rename it in a file manager, and treat any re-upload as a separate copy.

Will renaming reduce image quality?

A simple filesystem rename does not recompress the image. Downloads, edits, exports and re-uploads can produce a different copy, so compare the replacement before deleting the original.

Can I rename a screenshot?

Yes. Find it in the device’s screenshots folder, select it in Files by Google or My Files, and use Rename while preserving its extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I change JPG to PNG just by renaming?

No. Renaming changes text in the filename; it does not convert the image format.
