Amazon staff described this route for Amazon Smart Plug in a 2023 support answer: Amazon Smart Plug rename instructions. Amazon’s general Alexa Help also uses the Edit Name label for device naming, though that page addresses Echo devices: Alexa device-name help.
Choose a name Alexa can understand
Use a short, distinctive name that identifies what the plug controls, such as “Living Room Lamp” or “Coffee Maker.” These are practical examples, not official naming requirements. After saving, try saying the name displayed in the app when asking Alexa to control the plug; Amazon’s developer guidance illustrates voice control with the device name: Best practices for the Alexa app.
Rank #2
- SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
- COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
- CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
- NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps
If the plug is not listed
Renaming only works after the plug is connected to Alexa. For an unlisted plug, Amazon’s connection instructions direct you to tap Devices, select the plus icon, choose Add Device, select the smart-home device type and brand, then follow the app’s prompts: Connect a smart-home device to Alexa.
Amazon notes that compatible devices carry the Works with Alexa badge and that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. Those are setup considerations, not rename steps. Once Alexa lists the plug, use its device settings and Edit Name to change the name.
