You can reduce the amount of personal information visible online, but no single request erases every copy. Work in three places: remove or correct the information on the original website, ask search engines to hide eligible results, and opt out of data brokers and people-search sites. These steps affect different copies, so track each request and check again later.
Understand what “remove” means
Online exposure often exists in several places. A webpage may publish your details; a search engine may link to it; and brokers may copy those details into profiles they sell or share. Removing a search result does not delete the source page, and opting out at one broker does not remove copies held elsewhere. Google explains the distinction in its Search removal guidance; the FTC describes how people-search sites gather and reuse information in its people-search guide.

Make a private inventory of what is exposed
Search for your name alongside current and former cities, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Try name variations and check more than one search engine because results differ. The Center for Internet Security recommends monitoring your online presence and searching variations of your name in its online-presence guide.

Remove the information from its original source
If you control the account or page, edit or delete the information there and review its privacy settings. For information posted by someone else, contact the site owner or platform and ask for the specific content to be removed. Include the page URL and identify the exposed information without sending more personal data than necessary.
This source-level request matters because it targets the underlying page, not merely a link to it. Google generally advises contacting the website owner when the goal is to remove information from the web itself.

- Managed-node control in the router: Browse available SSRouter regions in S1's local dashboard and select a managed node without configuring a separate VPN provider.
- Switch nodes in the browser: Join S1 WiFi or LAN, sign in to the local dashboard, select Use this node, and see which managed node is active.
- Three routing modes: Direct uses the regular internet connection; Global routes supported traffic through the selected managed node; Smart applies country-based rules to supported traffic.
- Encrypted router-to-node link: Traffic routed through an SSRouter-managed node uses Trojan over TLS between S1 and that node. Compatible devices connected to S1 do not each need a VPN app; AX3000 WiFi 6 and four 2.5G Ethernet ports support wired and wireless use.
- Setup and service terms: Connect S1 WAN to an internet-ready DHCP router or gateway; S1 is not a modem. Managed-node access ends after 30 days or 100 GB from first activation, whichever comes first; no automatic renewal; a separate plan is required afterward.
Ask search engines to remove eligible results
After making a source-removal request, separately ask search engines to remove eligible results that expose your personal information. Google’s Results about you can monitor contact details you enter and let you request removal of qualifying Search results. You may need to enter your name and the personal information as it appears on the result. Requests are reviewed, and some pages—such as government, educational, newspaper, or business pages—may not be eligible.

An approved removal hides an eligible result from Google Search; it does not delete the original page or remove copies from other search engines. Google announced on February 10, 2026, that Results about you was beginning to expand in the United States to help users find and request removal of Search results containing government-issued IDs, including passports, driver’s licenses, and Social Security numbers. Opt out of people-search sites and data brokers
Search for your profile on people-search sites and follow each site’s own opt-out process. The FTC says these services can compile details from other brokers, public social profiles, and federal, state, and local public records. An opt-out can stop a particular site from selling your existing information, but it does not erase public records or guarantee removal from relatives’ and associates’ profiles or other brokers. The FTC’s guidance puts it plainly: “After you opt out, the people search site will stop selling your existing information.” Check periodically because records can reappear.
In the United States, some state privacy laws may offer additional rights, but eligibility and procedures vary by location, data type, and company. California residents have a state-specific option: the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) was reported as available beginning January 1, 2026, allowing requests to more than 500 data brokers. Check the Associated Press report and confirm current eligibility, broker coverage, and instructions through California’s official DROP portal. This is not a universal U.S. or international removal mechanism.

Decide whether a paid removal service is worth it
A paid service may save the time of submitting opt-outs manually, but it cannot promise to erase you from the internet. The FTC advises checking the sites covered, whether the service reports where it submitted requests, and how often it rescans for information that reappears. Before signing up, also check what identity information it requires, how that information is handled, the price, and the cancellation terms.

Use a specialized process for intimate images
If someone has shared a nonconsensual intimate image or video, including a digital forgery, use the platform’s intimate-image removal process rather than treating it as an ordinary contact-information request. The FTC says the Take It Down Act took effect May 19, 2026. Covered platforms that receive a valid request must remove the covered image or video and known identical copies within 48 hours. Follow the FTC’s Take It Down Act guidance for the scope and applicable process. This pathway concerns intimate imagery, not routine address, phone, or email exposure.
Keep checking after requests are complete
Record the outcome of each request and repeat it when information returns or appears on another site. Broker profiles can be rebuilt from public records and other sources, while source pages and search results require separate follow-up. Recheck the pages and results you documented instead of assuming that one successful request has removed every copy.
