Wash gently with a mild, non-soap cleanser, warm water and your fingertips, then rinse thoroughly and pat your skin dry. Skip scrubbing and repeated washes. If your skin is dry or sensitive, one evening cleanse may be enough; the available guidance does not establish that oil cleansing or double cleansing is necessary.
What “water-resistant” means—and what it does not
On a sunscreen label, “water resistant” describes how long the product is tested to remain effective on wet skin: 40 or 80 minutes. It does not mean waterproof, and those durations are not instructions for how long or how vigorously to wash afterward. The American Academy of Dermatology explains sunscreen label terms here.

How to wash it off gently
- Wet your skin with warm water. Use water that feels comfortable rather than hot.
- Cleanse with your fingertips. Apply a mild, non-soap cleanser and gently move it over the sunscreen-covered skin. Avoid scrubbing or using a rough washcloth.
- Rinse thoroughly. Cleanser left on the skin can contribute to irritation, so rinse until it is fully removed. The AAD’s rosacea skin-care guidance specifically cautions that cleanser remaining on skin can cause irritation.
- Pat dry. Use a soft towel without rubbing.
Adjust the routine for dry or sensitive skin
Do not turn sunscreen removal into repeated or forceful cleansing. The AAD’s dermatologist guide to skin care says that for people with dry or sensitive skin, washing once per day in the evening may be sufficient. A fragrance-free, non-abrasive cleanser is a reasonable option if those qualities suit your skin; stop using a cleanser that causes symptoms.

Do you need an oil cleanser or a double cleanse?
The cited guidance recommends gentle cleansing but does not compare cleanser types in controlled tests or establish that an oil cleanser, balm, micellar water, or second wash is required to remove water-resistant sunscreen. Choose a mild cleanser you can rinse away comfortably rather than assuming a particular format is more effective. If one gentle wash does not leave your skin feeling comfortable, avoid compensating with harsh rubbing; persistent concerns are best discussed with a dermatologist.

What to do if a product causes a reaction
The AAD recommends testing a new skin-care product on a small area for seven to 10 days before using it more broadly. For a wash-off product, leave it on for the normal contact time or five minutes, as directed. If a reaction develops, wash the product off and stop using it.
